Kurt Busiek gave the world Vampirella after ten long years, and for that he has to be one of the influential writers to add to the list. After many years working for Marvel Comics (and others) Kurt Busiek became the writer to bring Vampi back to the fans.

And what a return. After 10 years we got a series of stories that wrenched us into a totally new experience for Vampirella in the Morning in America series. That series laid the first foundations for Vampi's new origin, her unceasing fight against vampires, her battle against Chaos, and her new, more savage personality that dominated the earlier Harris stories.

Morning in America is a complex, sophisticated saga with almost as much happening beneath the surface as happens in the plot. 

Vampirella starts as an old woman, a situation created by the fact she used a substitute narcotic for her blood serum which took away her memory and her youth. She is suddenly rejuvenated by the taste of fresh blood and transformed into the Vampirella we know so well. Busiek weaves the Warren mythos created by Archie Goodwin into this set of stories, matching the old with the new admirably. At times we are reminded of the original stories, especially the Goodwin/Sutton blend before Jose Gonzales took the character to be his own in 1971.

Busiek covered the entire Morning in America series, closing the loop of Vampirella's return and opening the door to the major revelations that were to follow in Vampirella's Color Series in 1992 and 1993. He would be followed by Tom Sniegoski, who would inherit the mantle of the new Vampi with an almost seamless takeover.
