Vampirella #18 Rebirth #1 After all her trials and tribulations, Vampi and Lorelei are back on Earth, facing new challenges from newly transformed vampires who are more into psychic sucking and literal sucking. However, what makes these books so important are the non-continuity stories to celebrate Vampi's thirtieth year in comics by recreating the feel of the Warren magazines. In this issue we read about how Vampi herself seduced Archie Goodwin into writing her stories in the first place. A neat twist, carried off superbly by Jeph Loeb (author) and Tim Sale (artist). We also see Vampi find her original costume and 'slip' into it again. Has the armour gone, I wonder? Also this series is down on covers a little compared with the comics before and after. Three covers for #18, and two only for #19 and #20. One of the covers for each issue is called the 'Anniversary' cover to celebrate 30 years of Vampirella. |

Vampirella #20 Rebirth #3 The final comic in this series contains a story that really rekindles the Warren spirit that these 3 stories have tried to create. Ty Templeton writes of how Vampi is seduced into allowing a artist paint her in the nude, which in turn is supposed to trap her soul so the artist can live forever by continuing to trap the souls of all the beautiful women he paints in his canvases. What he didn't allow for was the fact Vampi is from Drakulon (well, we all thought that was fiction didn't we?) but anyway it seems to work and Vampi survives. Perhaps it was because she thought she was from Drakulon. Who cares. The story is great and the art superb. |
