Mark Texeria is best known for his work on Pantha, so much so that he made her his own until Dorian Cleavenger arrived with the Vampirella/Lady Death rematch. Yet, as the panel on the left shows, he could draw a 'mean' Vampirella. This is one of the best illustrations of Vampi flying in her 'Drakulon' myth, soaring above the spires of her alien world just before the holocaust that was to destroy it. |

But we must return to that sultry, mysterious character, Pantha, who still remains somewhat of an enigma to this day. |

The cover on the right (drawn by Texeira) is one of my favourites. Our heroine, she of the extra-long thigh boots (although a glance at Vampirella above shows that Texeira has a penchant for lengthy boots) glances back at us, almost as if we are disturbing her. Is she about to attack or rescue the hapless victim in the chair. In the actual story it is the latter, but looking at that cover I'm not so sure. On the left Pantha is a little less cattish and a lot more wistful. Perhaps she is more human than we think. Either way, the renditions are almost photographic in their appearance, much to my preference. |

| Below we have another illustration of Vampirella, sweeping through the night in her search for Pantha to try and prevent her from doing too much damage to the people who had imprisoned her. |

The story, titled faster, Pussycat. Kill! Kill!, is quite a strong indictment of the abuse of women by men, a common theme in Pantha stories. | ![]() |

many of the artists I have chosen Mark Texeria's work focuses more on
quality than quantity (in comparison with some of the others who have
drawn Vampirella) but it has its own power that I find grabs me when I'm
reading the story. He has also only really been featured in the
later stories in Vampirella Monthly, as the sole artist for
Pantha, until Dorian Cleavenger took over as the Pantha artist..
