Our favourite vampiress

Joe Jusko has only illustrated one Vampirella story, Blood Lust, but his work made such an impact on me (and many others) that I have included him as one of the Vampirella artists. I have to admit, I can never tire of his work on this comic.

There is only one way to describe his art.  Superb. His rendition of Drakulon with its dry red deserts, or the cool underground caves where Adam and Vampirella rest, or the luscious garden where Lilith awaits her final meeting with Vampirella are all rich in atmosphere and presence.

Blood Lust was Joe's first real work on a comic, as he is mostly known for his covers and trading cards. In an interview in the Blood Lust Deluxe Showcase Edition he talked about his work on the comic, and how he worked with James Robinson, the writer.

Vampi from behind

You can almost feel the heat, or relax in the cool and damp.  His gift is he takes your emotions into his pictures.

It is difficult to imagine how long each page took to paint. Each panel is a work of art, lovingly produced.

Adam and Vampi in Drakulon

Joe really enjoyed working on Drakulon, with its huge vistas and landscapes. Some of the paintings can actually take your breath away

As I am sure you can guess, I am a fan in more ways than one.

The other thing I really enjoy is Jusko's depiction of Vampirella herself, whether on the cover or in the story.

The trade Dracula War cover

On the left is the classic cover for the Dracula War trade paperback, one of my all-time favourite pics of Vampirella. Note the classic boots, unlike much of the interior art which features Vampirella in her thigh-length boots.

On the right is Jusko's cover for Sad Wings of Destiny, a darker Vampirella but still retaining that look that I believe only Jose Gonzales really captured in his drawings.

Finally, some more images to enjoy..
