Amanda Conner is the lady who, together with inker Jimmy Palmiotti, shattered Vampirella's world with the amazing story Death and Destruction which followed on from Vengeance of Vampirella.

And from that traumatic story of how Haemorrhage and Mistress Nyx killed both Vampirella and Adam we watched Vampirella rise again in Vampirella Lives (also illustrated by Conner and Palmiotti) as the two panels to left and right demonstrate.

Vampirella is a harder, wilder creature with more savagery and more determination to rid the world of vampires to atone for her mother's transgressions. In many ways it mirrors her new persona in Vampirella Monthly as the main saviour of the world against demons, vampires and baddies of all kinds.

The art is bold, colourful and dramatic without being 'over-the-top', with some genuine scary moments in the stories such as the pic on the left.

Conner and Palmiotti have created quite a reputation for their art, which could be considered surprising in view of the fact they have only collaborated on 14 stories in all.

The panel on the right is a good example of Conner's style, cool, clear, clean and yet definitely comic book art. This isn't the rich depth of the painted art of Joe Jusko, or even the superb realism of Jose Gonzales, even if only in black and white. Yet the drawing is definitely Vampirella.

In Death and Destruction Vampi and her friends have to fight the forces of evil (excuse the cliché) with a ferocity that is unusual in comics. Forget the old days in a Marvel comic of Spidey slugging it out with the Hulk - this is real damage that's being caused and real people bleed and die. In a way I almost feel like an intruder as I read this story, like I'm prying into someone's private battle. There is no sense of surface unreality here.

Look at the panel below left. Vampi is dispatching a demon, but study the battle-scarred body and the fierce expression on her face.

If you haven't read this series I urge you to get it, and enjoy the excitement of following the story from start to finish.

And what a finish.

One of the most eye-popping end panels in a comic ever, shown here on the right, as a blood-drenched Vampirella, heroine of more comics than we can imagine over the last 25 years, is impaled against the wooden door by a trident thrown by Nyx .

Is it all over?
