Humiliation and degradation are things that touch the very roots of our being, they dwell at the very foundation of who we are. This could never be considered light play, and should never be approached with anything not resembling caution and care. Still, what might be humiliating for one, might actually be something to be proud of to another. Also, what might be degrading for one, might be absolutely meaningless to another. It all has to do with each individual's emotions. There must be an infinite way to express emotions, there must also be infinite ways to experience them, I would imagine. I would suggest you not close yourself off to experiencing new things until you have determined with certainty they are not for you. As fun as it all might be because it is playing with a mind it can also be extremely harmful and quite dangerous. On the other hand it can be a very helpful and useful tool, WHEN USED PROPERLY, to do a great many things; including: build self esteem, instill a better sense of humility, also bring to the surface a sense of, or enhance tendencies of, exhibitionism -to name a few in developing your slave.

Humiliation & Degradation differs in its common use outside of (consensual) SM.

Degradation /deg ri day'shuhn/to reduced in quality, value or rank; debased; to vulgarized; bring contempt upon; to shame.

Typically the slave realizes that he is unworthy scum, however some slaves need their attitude checking, and which point the Master reinforces his authority and lowers the status of the slave to its correct level.

Any type of mind games such as humiliation and degradation, should only be done when everyone involved feels secure with everyone else involved. How secure?
Secure is a feeling, so it is up to those involved it just needs some good judgement, and this comes with experience, there is no problem in trusting your intuition, as dogs have that in abundance.

Typically Psycho-play is just one of the tools a good SM Master has it is blended together as to become virtually transparent, but they are two distinctly different types of play. The end results may be identical, but the methods are indeed different. Perhaps one of the earmarks of a good quality dominant is one who can blend the physical aspects of Sub/Dom with the psychological aspects of it with a degree of Mastery. However, simply because one can dominate with style and perceived ease does not mean they deserve trust, nor will it ensure they will be open or even capable of handling responsibility.

Humiliation, degradation and embarrassment have somewhat different meanings for a Dom and his sub than they do for non-SM people. If a guy wants to be seen as a 'boy', pup or sex slave and his Master treats him as a sex slave it may seem that his behavior is degrading [demeaning] to him. But a submissive's self esteem, his sense of who and what he is, are not injured by his behavior.

In fact, they are enhanced, because subs, no less than anyone else, are happiest and most self-confident when they can be outwardly who they are inwardly. This is very typically 'human animal' types of slaves.

The slave may in fact, feel most himself when his Master treats him as his slave/dog/pony and the slave appreciates this finding his place in the world Humiliating a submissive brings out the slaves humility. Slaves like to have others see them as they see themselves and when they have come to terms with their identity, they are proud of their submissiveness.
So the slave loves it when their Master embarrasses them by controlling them in front of others, or showing them off. However In a society that does not accept sub/Dom play, a Dom must choose these others with care. Typically being an SM/Leather friendly environment. Here the slave is being shown with his own kind.
For 'Switches' (both Top and Sub) they can have serious inner confusion and at one moment this are swimming in the sea of submission, then at another instance that hate that fact and reject it. Hence why there can be some serious risk in this kind of play. It is up to the Master to know his slave and to be able to read him like a book and sense where the slaves emotions are going.

Slaves typically need reminding of their place and the Masters power over them.
Humiliation and degradation is a useful tool to keeping the slave is the right sub space. A slave needs to be "manhandled" and/or to feel pain at his hands; big time. This is continual reinforcement of the message telling the slave what he is and who his Master is. It is quite common (I don't know of any that don't) that slaves need to regularly feel a Masters power over them, whether or not they have misbehaved; and usually they play up to feel the Master react. Often this is like testing the boundaries to see how far they can go. This is because a Master creates a structure - limits - for the submissive - something the slave can push against, knowing that though it might give a bit it will not break.

This is very important to most subs. Many subs will test the integrity of the structure from time to time with rebelion, in order to reassure themselves that they cannot escape it. It is very important to a slave to know that they are not kidding theirmselves, that the control that Master has over them is real, this is just part of the security that the slaves needs in his world.

A big mistake a Master can make is letting a slave get away with this - It might be tiersome to react, but the slave needs to know who his God is. In this world things can loose their edge and so much can become bland. Anything less physical and direct will not convince them that their Master will do what is necessary to keep them in their place, will not allow them to escape his dominance.
