Below is a basic outline of the various areas
of work that make up the Gloucestershire Probation Service. For more

Supervision |
We provide information to the Sentencers
in the Crown
and Magistrates' courts in the form of Pre Sentence Reports, Fast
Delivery Reports or Oral Reports. This is to help them determine the
sentence given to an offender and we, then, manage sentences served
in the community. We supervise offenders on the new Community
Order. These Orders may consist of one or more requirements mainly
depending on the seriousness of the offending. These requirements
can include unpaid work, supervision, attendance of a programme,
alcohol/drug treatment and or a residential requirement. We also supervise offenders sentenced to a period
in custody after they are released. In doing so, our aims are to
enforce the sentence of the court, to protect the public and to reduce
offending.

Unpaid Work |
The unpaid work unit provides supervised work for offenders on
community orders. Work undertaken includes, environmental maintenance,
painting and decorating and general clearance. This order allows
offenders to make reparation for their offences by serving the
community. Offenders can also gain employment and problem solving
skills, which will help them address their offending behaviour.
Beneficiaries of this service have included, Charitable organisations,
the disabled, the elderly and children's playgroups. Some of our work
is aimed at improving community safety, this is normally carried out
in conjunction with local authorities.

safe and effective management of offenders who either reside as a
condition of their bail, or as a condition of their prison licence or
Community Order.

Education, Training and Employment |
There is clear evidence
that if offenders gain work then they are less likely to reoffend.
Gaining employment for many offenders can be difficult both because of
the concerns of employers and the offenders lack of skills. The
Education, Training and Employment Team within Gloucestershire
Probation Area seek to address the basic skills needs of offenders,
their job readiness and the support both they and employers need to
ensure that the offender both gains and stays in employment.

Drug Treatment |
Drug treatment is an
integral part of our intervention with offenders who are dependent on
heroin and cocaine [crack]. There is clear evidence that such
treatment reduces crime while a person is in treatment and that these
changes lead to a lower level of offending even when the person has
left treatment. The Drug treatment that offenders receive is delivered
through a partnership approach with Gloucestershire Drugs and Alcohol
Service [GDAS], Gloucestershire Reintegration Service [GRS] and the
Countywide Specialist Substance Misuse Service [CSSMS]. Further
information on any of the following interventions, including how you
or a person in your family can access the treatment interventions
outlined, is available from Drugs Interventions Programme Manager, Ted
Yates on Glos 545769.

Youth Offending Team |
We are one of a number of key agencies who contribute to the Youth Offending Service. Alongside other
Youth Justice agencies the key aim is the prevention of offending by
the children and young people of Gloucestershire.
The unusual element of this service is that it is a full time
partnership between the County Council and other key agencies:
Connexions, Education, Health, GDAS, Police, Probation and Social
Services.
The Service works with
a large number of children and young
people, developed strong links with the Drug & Alcohol Action Team,
Children & Mental Health Service and been a key player in promoting
parenting support, accommodation strategies and basic skills
development.

Volunteers |
A small group of accredited volunteers - men and women of all ages
and backgrounds - work alongside Probation Service staff. They perform
a range of tasks adding value to our work with offenders, but also for
those who are considering applying to work in Probation, an
opportunity to find out more.
