Since our last
issue we have to record the death of another of our loyal members, viz. Mr. Charles
Strain: he joined at the beginning of the Society's life and rarely missed our meetings.
We extend to Charlie's family our sincere condolences.
We have mentioned
before that 1997 would see the hundredth birthday of the Alcester Victoria Silver Band:
this occurred during March, when a celebration took place at the Trades and Labour
Institute. The band played a selection of old and new pieces and the verve and
professionalism of the music was a worthy introduction to its second century. The Local
History Society joins the town at large in congratulating the Silver Band on its centenary
and wishing its forthcoming Proms (in October) every success.
