Occasionally, we print details of the Alcester and District Local History Society officers. Now, with a new year well under way and subscriptions from some not yet renewed, we thought it was time to give up-to-date details
Chairman: Graham Downie, 5 Crooks Lane, Studley, Warks.
Vice Chairman:John Shakies, 29 Hillmorton Close, Church Hill Redditch, Worcs.
Treasurer: Alan Godfrey, 43 Seymour Road, Alcester, Warks.
Secretary: Mrs. Janet Hollington, 38 Oak Tree Lane, Cookhill, Nr. Alcester, Warks.
A former Treasurer and long-standing Committee member in the early days of the Society, Mrs. Wilcox, died recently. We offer our condolences to her relations and friends.
If the organisers of the National Lottery had not heard before of Alcester, they will now! The Arrowvale (Youth) Brass Band has applied for help: the Alcester Victoria Silver Band is following suit: the working party meeting to forward a museum for the area is said to be considering applying for a grant.
The Society has produced a cassette explaining the history of Oversley Green in particular and Oversley parish in general: this is intended for the Oversley Green residents' group, with the intention of individual members listening to it in the privacy of their own homes.
With the decease of the Alcester Town (Association) Football Club we have been pleased to receive their minute books and papers. When we have made a resume of their contents for our own Society files, the originals will be sent to the Warwickshire Record office for safe keeping on long-term loan. We are building up quite a large archive for Alcester and district at the Record Office which will always be there if and when we ever need it.
At the end of 1996 the Alcester Silver Band will have existed for 100 years. 1997 will be a year of celebration and rejoicing, culminating in the special Proms concerts for which the band has become very well known. In the meantime, a commemorative book will appear: readers with old photographs, programmes, press cuttings, etc. are invited to lend them for scrutiny; please let the editor know.
