Alcester has been
playing Rugby Union since the 19th century. 1995 has been a good year for them.' Time and
again in the local press we have read of splendid 1st XV victories. Often as not, also,
the 2nd and 3rd teams have done well. What must have surprised many locals was the ability
of the Rugby Club to field as many as five XVs on many weekends, as well as a Junior team
and a Women's team. Each acquitted itself well throughout the season. We offer Alcester
Rugby Club our sincere congratulations for their superlative 1994/95 season and wish them
well in their intentions to modernise the King~s Coughton ground.
It is difficult
to imagine the citizens of Alcester accepting the the idea of a large, new housing estate
squashed in between the by-pass and the present estate on the defunct Eclipse industrial
area. Unless our councillors lead a rearguard action, it will surely happen. It is little
consolation to realise that 'filling in' seems to be a universal result of building new
roads.
The VE Day
celebrations seem to have gone well in the area. The Alcester committee does not intend to
allow VJ Day at the beginning of September to go unnoticed. Another display will be
mounted (in the Greig Hall). If anyone has any photographs relating to the war in the Far
East, we would be pleased to borrow them.
Readers may be
interested to know of two forthcoming meetings in the Society's programme. Both have an
ecclesiastical flavour and are at Alcester's Greig Hall, starting at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
9th August 1995: 'Mediaeval Churches' (A. Webster).
13th September 1995: 'Abbey and Angling - is there a Reel Connection?'(B. Mead).
The contrived pun is the speaker's. Local people will have in mind the River Arrow and the monasteries at Redditch, Studley and Alcester. Perhaps Mr. Mead has, too.
