In Spring, King William (William 11) in Gloucester became so ill that he was said everywhere to be dead. In his sickness he made God many promises; to lead his own life aright; to protect and be at peace with God's churches and never again to sell them for money; to have all just laws in his nation and the archbishopric of Canterbury, which had been kept in his own hand, he committed to Anselm, who had been Abbot of Bec; to Robert his Chancellor he gave the Bishopric in Lincoln and granted land to many ministers but that he soon took back when he was healed and let fall all the good laws he gave us.
