The Northern Territory Herbarium in Darwin, Australia has embarked on an ethno-biology project to conserve and promote the diversity of traditional Aboriginal knowledge of the plants and animals of the region. The Alice System has played an important role in helping the project achieve this aim. The project's Alice System 2.1 database includes around 1,100 native plants recorded with their uses, ecology, distribution, conservation status and the vernacular names used by 40 aboriginal language groups consulted so far. The database has already been used to generate a detailed checklist if plant names and uses in the Northern Territory. For further details about the project contact Nick Smith or Glen Wightman, Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory, PO Box 496, Palmerston, NT 0831, Australia.
