Fun! Features: Game Boy |
| Turn your LX into a Game Boy! |
| The NO$GMB Homepage, now closed down unfortunately, was home to the only known Nintendo Game Boy emulator that works on the 100 and 200LX palmtops. The program is freeware, and the special DOS XT/AT compatible version (117 KB) can be downloaded from the downloads page.
The bad news, however, is that even with a double-speed palmtop, you will most likely find games slow to the point of being unplayable. If anything, what I found was that although the Game Boy emulation was an impressive demonstration of the LX's capabilities, the games ran too slowly to truly enjoy. You may be lucky, however, and find some games that run at a reasonable speed - if you do so, please write in and let me know so that I can post the names of these games up on the site. |

| Using the emulator |
| To use the emulator, you will first need some Game Boy roms - these are the files containing the game code (normally, they have a .GB extension), and are typically reasonably small in size (often around the 50 KB mark). It is worth noting that it is probably illegal to use a Game Boy rom in your country without first owning the actual cartridge. Please do not mail me asking where you can find roms!
Once you have downloaded the emulator, you should unzip it into a directory of your choice (e.g. C:\Games\Gameboy). To run the emulator and play a game, you should type no$gmb <game name> where the game name is the filename of a game boy rom (e.g. mario1) without the extension. |

| Emulator settings |
The first thing to do after running the emulator for the first time is to press ESC and then ALT-O to load up the options menu (you might want to adjust the contrast and/or invert the screen to see what you're doing). Select the Redefine Keys option to check the default key settings, and alter them if you wish. After this, you should select Emulation Setup in order to get things working as fast as possible. Below are the settings which I have found to achieve the fastest emulation speeds on my double-speed 200LX. If anyone can suggest improvements, please let me know.

The (rather small!) list below contains the games which have been tested using the emulator on the LX. Please note that these games have been tested by other people and not by myself unless indicated. If you can add to this list, please write in, or use the form below. (Please note that there is no obligation to provide a description/notes, and if you do not wish your name/e-mail address to appear in the Posted by field, that's fine). Reviews are courtesy of the excellent GameBoy Monolith (reviews index).
