| More about the
Nokia Cardphone:
This is a dualband device which can be used for voice, fax and data which plugs into a compatible device (e.g. laptop, palmtop, portable fax) with a type II PC Card (PCMCIA) slot to give it communications capability. This is the World's first product which supports high-speed data transfer in HSCSD networks, which means that right now you can achieve 28.8kb/s uncompressed transfer rates, rivalling fixed line networks. That's three times faster than in today's 9.6 kb/s GSM networks. The Nokia Card Phone is 10 mm thick and weighs just 57 grams. There is a headset socket on the edge so you can use for private voice calls too, and sound support is not required on your laptop or device. This product launched in August 2000 on Orange coinciding with the high speed data services launch - a UK exclusive on Orange. At normal speed, the Nokia Card Phone supports 14.4 kb/s, it will automatically shift up to double speed using two "time slots" in and two out, doubling the transfer speed to 28.8 kb/s if another time slot is available on the network. In practice you should get this speed most of the time. If you are in an area of poor coverage the Cardphone will work at either 9.6kb/s or 19.2kb/s, but again if it can, it will always try to speed up so you get the best performance if the capacity and network coverage is available. |
|
High Speed Circuit Switched Data, HSCSD, is a new technology now being implemented in several GSM cellular networks. HSCSD makes it possible to use several time slots simultaneously when sending or receiving data. In a cellular network offering basic single-slot service, you get to use one slot in, one slot out, no matter if you are talking, faxing, emailing, or surfing the Internet. Several GSM networks are currently being upgraded from 9.6 to 14.4 kb/s, an increase of 50%. In the UK only Orange is upgrading, in most countries there is at least one network with the supporting technology, so you can still benefit from the quick speeds while roaming abroad. The Nokia Cardphone was the World's first device to support HSCSD. Everyone can use 14400bps for no additional cost, calls at 28800bps are charged at a slightly higher flat rate, to reflect the increased bandwidth being used on the network and made available to you. For an explanation of HSCSD click for the Nokia demonstration (Flash 3 or newer plug-in needed).
More about GPRS (for packet switched internet access):
GPRS operates in a very similar way to the internet does. The concept of a telephone call no longer applies. You are always connected to the internet, and are charged only for the data sent & received (measured in bytes). The bandwidth is shared between a number of users. So while you may get a higher speed than is possible with HSCSD, more often than not you will find GPRS a bit slower to use. That being said it is absolutely ideal for low bandwidth services like text email, WAP and instant messaging. GPRS requires an additional GPRS bundle to be added to any regular voice tariff.
As HSCSD & GPRS are new technologies only the newest and most advanced networks have chosen to support this, so you will not be able to use it in every country on every network.
