Motorola Accompli
009, GSM900/1800/1900 triband
Motorola describe this as a personal interactive communicator, which delivers voice, fax, email, WAP and internet browsing in a device which resembles a PDA and provides the expected PIM functionality as well. This product will not appeal to traditional voice phone users, calls can only be made using the supplied headset, although thanks to voice dialling you do not always need to open the device up to dial. The most distinctive feature of this product is the 256 colour display, which is the first of its kind in a mobile phone / communicator device. It is also one of the first devices available supporting GPRS, the new packet switched data transfer method which gives you affordable "always on" connectivity on a mobile network. Apparently this phone
was sold commercially, but if this is the case, it was on a very limited
release.

Orange VideoPhone
The Orange videophone is a palm-held device which will provide full video and audio communication capabilities, as well as complete PDA (personal digital assistant) functionality, including e-mail access, internet browsing, MS Organiser/Office applications and handwriting recognition. It is significantly larger than a normal mobile phone, but this device does a whole lot more than any other single box mobile device. Users will be able to initiate and receive both video and standard audio calls at rates of up to 12 frames-per-second. It will allow handsfree operation in video and audio mode, with the loudspeaker doubling as an earpiece and the microphone as a mouthpiece. For privacy, the Videophone will also support detachable earpiece headsets. The device which will run on the Windows CE 3.0 operating system, will be dual band and able to automatically switch between GSM 900/1800 frequencies. This is the World's first GSM videophone, and of course a UK exclusive on Orange. For more information on the video compression
developed for this in conjunction with the University
of Strathclyde click here.

Sendo Z100 triband
From the press release: "Weighing just 99 grams, the Sendo Z100 Multimedia Smartphone is the smallest and lightest GPRS tri-band Smartphone. It features an impressive 65,000-color TFT display, comparable in quality to a high-end laptop display. The Z100 plays MP3 and WMA audio files and a stereo headset is included in the package. In addition, it is a fully functional phone that will operate on GSM 900, 1800 and 1900 networks across Europe, Asia and the Americas. The Z100 includes USB, IrDA and RS-232 connectivity and hot-pluggable Multimedia Card memory. A wide range of accessories will be available." Features: Triband, Infra-Red, WAP, GPRS UPDATE: What went wrong? About two months prior to launch, a Taiwanese company called HTC (the maker's of the Compaq IPAQ announced an exclusive deal with Orange for what has now become the Orange SPV. The SPV stole all of the Z100's thunder and is the first and still the only Microsoft Smartphone on the market. Sendo allege that Microsoft used Sendo's ideas and expertise and passed it to HTC, who made the same phone but much more cheaply. This issue will be rumbling through the American courts for years to come. Meanwhile Sendo have committed to the Nokia 60 Symbian platform and hope to launch a brand new Smartphone later in 2003. |

Panasonic
P2101V (NTT DoCoMo
FOMA)
The world's first small & light videophone, in fact it's only 150g! The Panasonic is one of three of the very first 3G phones on sale in Japan, on the World's first commercial 3G network. The other two are similar designed handsets from NEC. Dubbed FOMA (Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access) this gives us a taste of what we can expect to see in Europe late in 2002 when the first 3G networks launch here. In the UK all the existing network operators will launch 3G, and there will be one newcomer: Hutchison. Launched: 4th October 2001 (on NTT DoCoMo FOMA 3G service in Japan) |
I hope this guide to some future developments is interesting, but please don't blame us if some of these products are delayed or just end up as "vapor-ware". Thanks, Scott @ Freedom Mobiles.
