There have been Methodists in Scotland since the beginnings of the Methodist movement in the mid-eighteenth century. Congregations can be found stretching across the central belt form Girvan/Paisley/Glasgow to Edinbugh and the Lothians in the east, along the east coast and up the centre of Scotland through Stirling and Perth to Inverness, Aberdeen and the Moray coast. Methodism is also prominent in Shetland but has its own organisation distinct from mainland Scotland.

Today there are faith communities responding to the changing conditions of the twenty-first century. New or re-ordered buildings, different patterns of ministry and developing relationships with other Christian churches are some of the visible signs of change. A commitment to social justice and inclusiveness underpins the sense of welcome offered to all.

Methodism in Scotland is not numerically large. However, it draws on resources and support by being part of the British Methodist Conference which includes Wales and England. We are committed to playing a full part in the life, witness and service of the whole Church in and for Scotland. We rejoice in the ministry of the whole People of God. We seek to be a sign and celebration of the grace and love of God demonstrated in the person of Jesus Christ for the whole of creation. A sense of searching, enquiry, puzzlement, douby and mystery are also part of the journey.

This site gives some further glimpses of the life and work of the Methodist Church in Scotland. By using the links you can also access the British website as well as many individual church sites.

I hope you find it informative and perhaps even thought-provoking in reflecting on events, values and circumstances.

The Revd James W Jones
Chair of the Methodist Synod in Scotland.
