Gardens

Situated at the rear of the gardens are the remains of the Franciscan Friary established in 1258. The Friary was dissolved by King Henry VIII and now only the tower (dating from the 15th century) remains. That the Friary was established only 32 years after the death of the Founder who lived in Italy is testimony to his popularity and the speed with which the order spread throughout Europe.(Follow this link for information on St Francis and the Franciscans)

Located in the Friary's grounds was Richmond's only well (except for two inside the Castle). It was to this well that the townsfolk came for their water.
