The Victorians were great producers of written documents. You should find a whole collection in your local studies library.

  • Local maps. Large scale Street maps were produced from the late 19th Century
  • Rate books. Often huge documents but can be used to locate where they lived
  • Photograph Collections.
  • Electoral Registers. Remember that many peeople could not vote.
  • Newspapers. These are mainly in local studies libraries, especially for local editions.
  • Trade and other societies
  • Your ancestors were probably members of a trade society, friendly society or from the late Nineteenth Century the local Co-operative Society. These records are probably still with the descendants of these societies.
