George Bateman was a tailor working and living in the centre of Nottingham. He was descended from a long line of farmer from Granby in the east of the county.

His son Thomas worked first in the local iron works before training as a nurse in the towns mental institution where his sister worked. He later moved to Sheffield and returned to working in the iron and steel trades.
