The
Barker family of Stannington were razor grinders living in the
Back Lane area of the village. Samuel Barker moved to the village
around 1820 from the hamlet of Ridgeway
in North Derbyshire and was descended from a line of Sicklesmiths
who lived in the Ridgeway and Eckington area of North Derbyshire.
His parents George and Hannah Barker were sicklesmiths and their
descendants continued living in the area well into the 20th Century.
Samuel
moved to Stannington
to the North of Sheffield and was one of the many grinders who
were attracted to the growing knife trades of Sheffield that used
the fast flowing rivers of the Rivelin and Loxley.
