Trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen

Michael Pointon is presenting a six-part series at 6pm Saturdays on Radio 3 : FM 90.2-92.4 Mhz
entitled "Ride Red Ride!"
Tune in next Saturday 16 September when along with trumpeter and jazz historian, John Chilton,
Mike will be covering Red's association with King Oliver, Pee Wee Russell, Satchmo, Spike Hughes, bassist, composer, jazz critic, who was born and died a Londoner, and the demanding arrangements of Don Redman.

Red made his first recording in New York in 1927.
Can anyone name the Tune, the Ballroom and Bandleader surrounding the event?

British jazz musicians have had an affinity over the years with Red, and a review of the CD
That Salty Dog : Pat Hawes
of such a group will be of interest to them.

Steinway & Sons, Howarth, London, and The William Wallace Pub

Jazz fans, musicians and all who find themselves with time to spare whilst on their way to the 100 Club, 100 Oxford Street, may find it of interest to drop-in at the Steinways & Sons, piano showrooms at 44 Marylebone Lane, and into Howarth, London, for woodwind musical instruments at 31-35 Chiltern Street close by, then sample fine Scottish ales and whiskies in the
William Wallace Pub
on their way to hear the finest of Traditional jazz during any Friday lunchtime
in the heart of London.
Taken in the year 1919 a photo of a band of 27 banjoists
Barbara Hester writes enclosing a photograph of 27 banjoists including their conductor and asks if anyone may be able to recognise her grandad, Ernest Young, 2nd from the right, back row. They held a concert for the Carshalton and Hackbridge 'W' Division Specials held at the Café Royal dated November the 21st, 1919, Croydon.
The photo was framed by George F. Prior, Ross Parade, Wallington.
Click Your Memory!! for photo page. Please e-mail KJR if you can help Barbara.
