IT Security

"No field is quite as dynamic or fast-moving as security. It is the issue of the internet age." Bill Gates

If Bill recognises it, it's good enough for us. In truth, with our clients, 1stBase has worked in this sector for some four years, in virus, spam and porn prevention, DOS and DDOS, Managed Security Services and in-house security devices, internet and network security and enterprise policy. Our role has been to identify sectors and sub-segments, advise on market access and channels, source company and contact data on the field, and create selected, specialised IT Security databases.

Issues in IT Security are wide-flung, affecting every PC user, every IT organisation and every CEO. Some industries, such as financial services, insist on rigid security standards as a backbone of self-regulation and protection for the customer while others, such as travel, rely on market forces and competition to drive customer interests. In all, the role of IT Security Manager is complex, with technological advances on a weekly basis, new products and services designed to contain security risks and ease the load. Meanwhile threats become more sophisticated, aggressive and publicised.

In a business or public sector body, there are at least two main areas of consideration for IT security: corporate governance and technical solutions.

Corporate governance is the remit of the Chief Executive or Departmental Head (or Compliance Director) who has responsibility to stakeholders and to customers (the public) for effective management and efficient operation of the enterprise. Dangers lurk everywhere, within as well as externally, and remaining alert is the responsibility of all, governed by security policy, established by the senior management. Security policy affects every aspect of the enterprise's operation and the more we all become dependent on IT for every daily action, the more IT security takes a central role in that policy.

Technical IT security solutions are the chassis, nuts and bolts of the designed enterprise. Planning them in the light of policy and technology advances and latest risk assessments and publicised experience and legislative imperatives is a minefield. A strong IT Security manager is a key decision-maker in the organisation, with the support of his own line management in IT, possibly the IT Director, and eventually the Board of Directors.

These key decision-makers are the unit that 1stBase concentrates on in the sourcing of target contacts for IT security products and services vendors. Take a look below at the profile of 1stBase's IT Security Sector Database and then give us a call on 01869 326 420 or email info@1stbase.org.uk.

About This Report
This White Paper written by IDC and commissioned by Steria, examines the importance of securing and protecting an organisation's corporate assets and resources. The study identifies the issues organisations should consider and provides insight into how companies can utilise security both as a protector and as a business enabler. Through a series of case studies, leading organisations illustrate how they have overcome the challenges they faced in protecting their assets while recognising the inherent benefits of their security investment.
