1954 BSA Bantam D3 - 150cc

 Comp' Bantam

Com Bantam side

This is my 1954 Replica Competition Bantam for sale now on  eBay.  The bike was built in the early 90's from genuine 'comp' parts like the front mudguard, footrests and rear sprocket, and parts I made such as the seat brackets and centre stand.

The engine is a D3 150cc with a high compression cylinder head made using a 125 D1 head with  a squish band to match the D3 bore. The compression is around 9:1 compared with 6.4 for the standard machine.

The Wico Pacy generator is fully refurbished and the electrics have been converted to 12v. (see the article on this site) so that the bike is usable and safe. The points and condensor have been disgarded in favour of an 'ATOM' electronic ignition module. This improves starting and running as well as being maintenance free.

A small 12v lead-acid gel type battery lives in the toolbox to power the headlight and stop-tail lamp.

The rear tyre is a genuine Dunlop trials universal and the front is a chinese improt. Both are in excellent condition as the bike has had very little on-road use.

The bike is  registered with an age-related number, and  was dated as a 1954 model. Spares are plentiful and cheap.

The engine has been rebuild and the crankcases are secured with stainless steel Allen screws. The carburettor has its original strangler / air filter and all new gaskets of the correct type and thickness.

electrics under tank

This is the plate fitted under the petrol tank to mount the Zener diode, the rectifier and electric horn. Once the tank is in place, none of this can be seen. The electrics are 12 volt.

The exhaust is a modified road pipe coupled to an early type flat silencer supplied by Unity Equipe of Rochdale. Handlebars are BSA B40 while the footrests are genuine Bantam 'comp' type which are 'borrowed' from a C-Group BSA roadster, The stand is a special lengthened type so that the larger tyres can be lifted clear of the road.

  engine

The bike is great fun to ride and is very different from a standard Bantam. The higher riding position makes it feel like a much larger machine. The engine has been recently rebuilt with a new genuine BSA con-rod, big end and small end. The piston is a brand-new +0.020" Hepolite and the ignition has been uprated with the Atom ignition module.
