CBC Online: Voice Trials

Voice Trials

How to Apply

If you would like to apply for a voice trial with the CBC, fill in and submit the Voice Trial Application Form on this site. If you have any queries, please email or telephone the Choir Director: consult our Contact Page for details.

This page gives some useful background information for applicants.

The Choir

The CBC Concert Choir consists of approximately 24 full members plus six probationers. Roughly six new boys are needed each year to replace changing voices.

Boys start as probationers (trainees). Probationers are accepted from the age of 8 (or younger in exceptional cases), but older boys are even more welcome - maturity and stamina are needed for life in the choir. Probationers normally attend all rehearsals and local performances, but can be given leave when required. They are free to leave the choir at any time.

A boy who has proven his worth can be made a full member any time after his 9th birthday. Full members are expected to participate fully in all choir events, including international tours.

The CBC's Opera Group provides opportunities for exceptionally gifted boys to develop their talents even more fully. This group often performs separately, and its soloists are in demand for professional opera, concert and TV productions all over the world. The CBC's repertoire is very varied, from the sacred to the secular, from the serious to the light-hearted - see our Repertoire pages for more details.

The opportunities are wonderful for the right boy - join the CBC and see the world!

Requirements

The applicant:

Voice Trials

Voice trials take place individually at Bar Hill and are quite informal. Generous time is given to each boy and his family.

Rehearsals and Solo Lessons

Concert Choir rehearsals take place in the Chorister Room, King's College School, West Road, Cambridge, on Mondays and Thursdays, 7-9 pm, during normal school terms.

Each boy receives tuition in solo singing, voice production and music theory at least half an hour each week at Bar Hill.

Transport to and from rehearsal and local performance venues is usually by parental rota system (many come long distances). It works: choir parents are very supportive and helpful.

Boarding

For members whose families live far afield or outside the UK, boarding and schooling can be arranged at the King's College Choir School.

Cost of Membership

The termly cost of membership is similar to that of instrumental lessons. Generous reductions or entirely free tuition is available for low earners. No gifted boy is ever barred from the CBC for financial reasons.
