The River Café

Beynac Village - Dordogne
DO 17

Outside of Paris and a few southern cities, the French Counmtry Guesthouse experience is normally one of tranquility and open countryside: a stay at the River Café is an entirely different experience, especially in summer months: here you are right in the centre of a famous medieval village and, whilst you are within walking distance of a variety of cafés, restaurants and shops, you must accept that it does not offer complete peace and quiet.

Overlooked by the mighty cliff-top castle and separated from the Dordogne by the narrow, river-bank road from Sarlat to Bergerac, the River Café offers a high standard of comfort in a simple, calssical style, very much in keeping with the great age of the building and its surroundings.

Accommodations: The 3 AIR CONDITIONED bedrooms all have en-suite shower or bath and toilet - the décor is elegant but simple - lime washed oak floors, pastel colours and old beds with modern mattresses:

1. A double bedroom with views of the river, pastures and hillside chateaux across the river.

2. A bedroom with two single beds with views of the river, pastures and hillside chateaux across the river.

3. A double bedroom tucked away to the rear of the bulding facing onto the café's terrace, a quieter situation than the other two rooms but without the lovely views.

The house is close to the road and there is some traffic noise - this is to a great extent neutralised by the fact that windows can be kept closed because of the air-conditioning, the thick stone walls and by the elevated level of the bedrooms.

The River Café is a popular and very successful restaurant, hence there is possible disturbance from its trade in the evening - however, last orders are taken at 9.30pm so all tends to become quiet after 11pm.

The Dordogne region is famed for its gastronomy - foie gras, confit de canard, truffles, walnuts, cepes - this is the lap of plenty.  The River Café rightly has a growing reputation for the finest cuisine - its chef, previously at the Grosvenor House in London, offers brilliant, original interpretations using the wonderful regional ingredients.

During the summer, continental breakfast can be taken outside on the raised terrace overlooking the river or, in other seasons or by choice in the dining room.

Your English speaking hosts provide a warm welcome.
Car parking is off road in the public parking area nearly opposite to the café.
Open all year except for occasional holidays taken by the owners.
