It was at the end of a winter's day that Jean-Pierre and Marie-France saw the house for the first time. It possessed that indefinable charm of old country houses which have seen the passing of many years. What charm there was in the bulls-eye window and the old stone walls, in the grey oak shutters, the wooden floors with their wide floorboards, the doors with their carved frames. Through the windows, their gaze rested on the garden: just a few ancient pear trees on either side of the path, cider-apple trees on the lawn, an old well in the middle, a boxwood hedge and the remains of a hazel-covered arbour - they were enraptured. They knew, without even looking at each other, that this would be their home. Since then, year by year, the house has become more beautiful and very soon came the desire to open the presbytery to the outside world; this came about with exhibitions of her paintings and his sculpture, open from Easter to the end of summer, and, later on, with the opening of two then three of the bedrooms to summer visitors.
