I think Farmhouse Russet says Boogie Woogie much more
so than Cumberland Grey, don't you agree?

Of course, given Boogie Woogie's roots, perhaps a nice
Santa Fe Brown would be more appropriate but I fear
I've come to late and the choice has already been
narrowed.

Hope that helps.

Tim,

I've left three messages on your cell phone,
but you haven't got back to me. Why?

Anyway, you need to decide between the
Cumberland Grey and the Farmhouse Russet for
the kitchen. I have sixteen boxes sitting
here making the place look untidy. Come
on mate, give us a call.

I play piano too! I have some entertainment history here.
I admire Jerry Lee Lewis; he does a mean rock & roll & boogie woogie version!

I am classicaly trained, 2.5 years in college, but I love boogie woogie, ragtime, & early rock & roll pianists.

One time I met Little Richard; he came down here to entertain the troops. I saw him at Luby's restauraunt, lol.

Excellent site.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Big Joe Duskin, Katie Webster ( 7 times ), Dr John, Little Willie Littlefield to name but a few of the greats.

Not forgetting Axel Zwingenberger.

Seeing there are a lot of American visitors to your site, I wonder if they have heard some of the current UK exponents of boogie woogie/blues and R'n' R:

check out :

Dino Baptiste ( blinding left hand ) and right
Mike Sanchez ( who used to be with The Big Town Playboys )
Louise Vauze ( who plays the whole sh-bang and teaches kids brilliantly ).
Diz Watson ( of Diz and the Doormen ), who mainly does a lot of rollin New Orleans style like the'Fess.

There is a new kid on the block : Ben Waters who I've seen a few times this year : rated by the Times as the best up and coming blues/boogie pianist in the UK.

He plays with a band called 'Oversaxed' quite often at The 100 Club.

______

I play too.

I was also very fortunate to attend the filming of the live
' South Bank Boogie' ( a one-off special for LWT's The South Bank Show ) about 12 years ago.
To our American visitors, the South Bank Show is a long-running highly rated arts program that goes out on Sunday nights in the UK.
That show features boogie woogie on : piano(!),guitar, accordions and.... about 15 harps !

Reading through a lot of the emails requesting various tracks, has anyone out there heard much of Winifred Atwell's boogie woogie tracks ? The few I have are amazing, check out '17th Century Boogie': her material is hard to find : anyone got a clue, holler

A few favorites : 'Honky Tonk Train Blues' Meade of course ( although I have Jay McShann doing a great version, also a UK boogie whizz called Dave Taylor, who is now a popular pop star in Iceland ! )

'Boogie Woogie Dream' ( by the kings Albert and Peter )
'Dive Bomber'

oh the list goes on :

PS : Check out any Jools Holland gig : particularly when he duets with his brother Chris

Blinding stuff : keep rockin'

Your website has done all boogie lovers a great service. Keep up the good work !
I am looking for information on Billy Penrose, the man who introduced boogie woogie to british jazz lovers. Billy played piano with Lou Praegers band at the Hammersmith Palais, he also seemed to have played piano for Vera Lynn (during the war years) and for a time with the Ted Heath Band. His quartet recordings for the Parlophone label (on 78 r.p.m.'s) are rare, sought after boogie woogie classics. I am looking for recordings and sheet music
of this wonderful pianist, who inspired me to play the music and become a jazz pianist. I would be glad to hear from anyone who can help. I am in touch with Billy's grandson who lives in Australia and is also anxious to know more about his illustrious grandfather !

Tim--
I have been playing self-taught boogie-woogie for over 40 years. I do not know how to read music and I don't play anything else, but folks say I'm pretty good. Obviously, I do not play music for a living.

I have heard your stuff and it's fantastic -- like the first time I heard Albert Ammons when I was 10 years old. To my way of thinking, boogie-woogie piano has always been better than sex, and, even though I'm well into middle-age, I still do enjoy sex.

I do not, at present, have the capability to record / capture my music, but, if you like, I will attempt to do so and send via snail mail a CD-ROM, or perhaps an old-fashioned cassette.

How many pianists are there who just do boogie-woogie to the exclusion of anything else? Do you read music? Have you had lessons, or are you self-taught? Do you ever get to the United States? I would love to 'jam' a la Pete Johnson and Albert Ammons -- 2 pianos or 1 -- either way.

Best Wishes for a Boogie-Woogie New Year!

I was amazed to find so many people interested in boogie-woogie, or maybe I wasn't as it means so much to me and has for forty years or more. I am a 'front parlour' player, I suppose. There has always been a mild interest in my family in boogie, which, I believe goes back to 1941. At that time there were hundreds of thousands of American forces personnel in the North of Ireland prior to the launch of the D-Day landings. They were billetted out among the population at large and some of them stayed in my grandmother's house. She had a lovely Bluthner piano in her sitting-room and there were lots of paties from what I hear.My aunt married one of the GIs staying there and her daughter showed me how to play very simple 12-bar music. Very often, this took the form of 'In The Mood', which was outrageously popular at the time. In this way boogie-based music was handed down through our family, and I have continued to play it over the years. I try not to learn from sheet music or recordings as I wish to sound as much as possible like myself, and not another player, no matter how eminent. Having said that, I am much impressed by the style of Dr John. Who wouldn't be?

My interest in your excellent website, stems from the fact that I am trying to obtain recordings, sheet music and biographical information on a boogie woogie pianist called Billy Penrose. I used to listen to old Parlophone (78 r.p.m.)recordings of this artist in the 1950's when I was in my teens, and admired his very original boogie compositions, which were quite sophisticated and original. At that time I had some sheet music of his compositions, and I could play quite a few of them.In fact it was Billy Penrose, and his music (along with Benny Goodman !) that turned me on to jazz !
I believe he was a British pianist, but a search on the internet has revealed almost nothing aout him, although there are some recordings of his mentioned.
Any information about Billy Penrose that you can post your site would be a great help.

Tasty playing! I've been playing semi&pro (blues and all other styles including boogie) for 40 odd years. recently
started as trainee music teacher (11-16 year olds)and the kids are begging me to teach them blues/boogie piano.
So been looking for good sites - yours is a belter and will recommend it to them.

Heya Tim,
I play some BoogieWoogie too, and I love your style. Octave boogie rules :)
If I had better equipment I would do some recordings too but... no can do ...
Anyway, keep up the good work!

On a sidenote, I've always been looking for BoogieWoogie partitions (notes). If you can send some to my email (remove 'NOSPAM.') I'd appreciate it!

Thanks & bye!

Loved your 'Rowdy walking bass boogie' mp3 track which I downloaded. Superb! What is the track playing in the background of the mp3 page? I would have loved to have download it too!. Again, superb!!

More fast boogie woogie tracks like these, or Cleo Brown's version of Pintetop's boogie woogie, please!!

I would love a CD or tape of solo piano, fast boogie woogie tracks.

Keep playing those fast boogie woogie tracks, Tim!

Hi Tim it's me again,
How is the playing going?

Did you happen to find the family history that your parents have?
Also has Michael Wheals got in contact with you? He says he has also some detailed info back to the 1600's.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Baden Wheals :o)

p.s sorry i keep posting messages to you this way but for some reason i can't send e-mails. I can reply and recieve but can't send. SORRY.

I have recently started studying the art of boogie-woogie piano playing. I was given a set of transcriptions dating from the 1940's of some of Pete Johnson's famous solos including Cherry Red. I was wondering whether you had any old sheet music that I could borrow and learn some more boogie piano from. If not, do you know anywhere I can get old sheet music from.

I listened to some of your recordings on the mp3's , and was impressed. I think your reviews on
some cd's were good to. I would say however , though , if you want to improve your boogie woogie , listen to these important tips.
1. Make sure your piece has a dynamic start , this attracts listeners
2.Your use of basses are good , but try and play in a deeper octave and really
stomp the bass and use this as the driving force to make it rhythmic.
3.Have a good ending. Albert ammons always ended his pieces in great style ,
so i would say that , that would be the icing on the cake , and your pieces would be perfect.
