George Best Update

Well I once promised not to report every lapse of George's drinking, but our favourite football- genius and rebel is making the headlines again.

Last Saturday (12 July) it is reported that Geroge was arrested after an alleged fight with a photographer. Police confirmed that Best and a 31 year old male were arrested at Chequers Hotel at Walton on the Hill in Tadworth, Surrey. Though they were taken to Reigate police station, no further charges were made.

According to the BBC website, Best's local landlord confirmed George is having the odd lapse with drinking alcohol, though he is a 'model' customer.

George has,of course, had a liver transplant, and starting to drink again will be very dangerous to his health.

One typical email to Bob's 70-71 Page's was Kathryn Gale's who writes:

I am seeking George Best Fan Club address to send him words of support and tell him don't turn back to the booze after you have come so far. I am not particularly a Man U fan, but I don't want to see someone who is a legend like George to fall from grace at this stage in his life.

It seems George's website isn't up and running at present, so I hope he reads this message here as Kathryn speaks on behalf of the huge number of his fans that visit these pages.

Billy Bremner Special

Leeds Leeds Leeds, the official club magazine for the ailing Leeds United, has dispensed with reporting current bad news and offered instead an excellent Billy Bremner special !

The July 2003 edition of the magazine has a 36 page tribute to Billy and I'm prepared to be corrected, but I got the Billy Bremner picture count (a long since forgotten feature of the Bob 70-71 Pages) to 62 !!!

The tribute runs right through his life and career with additional contributions from Eddie Gray, Peter Lorimer and Allan Clarke.

Some of the pictures are quite common, but there's many more interesting unfamiliar ones, too - the star being Billy playing for Leeds in Man U. style red shirt and white shorts. This picture could even be from the 70-71 season, the other player in shot looks like Huddersfield Town's Jimmy McGill.

In the Yorkshire area the magazine is widely available in newsagents priced at 3 pounds 25 pence, individual back copies can be ordered from phoning 0845 120 2320.

For subsciption enquires phone 01895 433 722, or email leeds.united@comag.co.uk.

June News

-I took a bit of a break in June, but here's all the stories that would have appeared...

Harvey Testamonial

Colin Harvey (Everton) is to have a testimonial on 10 August 2003, following his retirement from the club he played for, coached and managed. See BBC SPORT Football My Club Everton Harvey to leave Everton for the complete version of the following report:

Colin Harvey is to retire from the backroom staff at Everton on medical grounds.

The Under-19 Academy boss has undergone three hip-replacement operations but is still being troubled.

And the 58-year-old has decided to call time on his Blues career, which began as a player and saw him progress to coach and manager.

"I've had the hip trouble and it's been limiting what I've been able to do on the training ground," he told the club's website.

"All good things come to an end and with it being nearly 40 years since my debut and with my testimonial coming up, it's as nice a time to go as any.

"It's my time as a player that I'll treasure more than anything else. To be an Everton supporter and go on to play almost 400 games for the first team means more to me than anything and that's what's given me the biggest satisfaction.

"To win the championship and the FA Cup as an Everton player was tremendous."

Harvey played 386 times for the Toffees, scoring 24 goals, before returning to the club as Howard Kendall's number two during the mid-1980s.

He progressed to manager where he recorded two top-six finishes and an FA Cup final during his three-year tenure.

Everton will play Parma at Goodison Park on 10 August in Harvey's testimonial match.

Frank Worthington Driving Ban

The 25 June 2003 edition of The Huddersfield Daily Examiner led with the story that Frank Worthington has been banned from driving after reportedly causing a pile up on the M62.

The paper reported that last March, Frank was going in the fast lane and flashing lights to make people pull over, only someone then didn't, so Frank apparantly tried to overtake on the inside lane. What followed was 'a horrific pile-up'.

The paper had a large picture of Frank entering the Court hearing the case in Bury, and reports that Frank was convicted of driving without due care, fined 500 pounds plus 250 pounds costs. Frank already had ten points to which another six were added leading to an automatic six month ban.

Frank was cleared of failure to stop after the accident, and failure to report the accident. Mark le Brocq defending Frank stated that Frank knew nothing about the accident.

Thanks to Huddersfield Town fan, Paul Gillespie for passing on this news item

Eddie Gray Returns

Eddie Gray has returned to Leeds United just a month after being sacked as the club's Assistant Manager (See May 2003 news). The new role sees him return as the club's special ambassador. Leeds United's morale is at a new low at present, so Eddie will have his work cut out over the next few months.

Leeds United Football Club - The Official Website reports club Chairman Professor John McKenzie as saying:

"We've had this in mind since the decision was made regarding the coaching staff," he said.

"We had to settle Eddie's contract on the management side, but we have had some positive discussions since then and I'm pleased he has accepted the offer to continue working for us."

See Leeds United Football Club - The Official Website for the full report.
