Wolves were original members of the League in 1888 and back in 1970-71 the club was still very much one of the big names in football. Memories of the Golden Years from the late 30s to 1960 were still fresh in the supporters' minds, rather than the distant memory that they are now.In the the Fifties under the leadership of England captain Billy Wright, the team won all of their three Championships, were runners-up twice more, and were F.A.Cup winners in 1949. Even without Billy they were League runners-up in 1959-60 (a height never reached since) and FA Cup winners in 1960 (the last of four FA Cup wins for the club).Bill McGarry's team during the early Seventies had a number of top footballing names and restored to lesser extent some of this glory. There was a UEFA Cup final (1971-72)(see uefa), a Texaco Cup win (1971) and League Cup win (1974) (see league) ... but then came the dreadful Eighties.A final honour of a League Cup win in 1980 (see league) was a false dawn for the decade which saw them fall from the top division in 1983-84 to the bottom division in 1986 following three straight relegations !!! In 1988 the club achieved a probably unwanted double of the Sherpa Van Trophy and the Division 4 Championship thus joining an elite group of clubs to win all four League Championships.Wolves are back into the second League now, so in spite of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, they have had just one season in the Premiership (2003-2004).
