Where are they now ? | |
| Bob 70-71 | - Know any others ??! Let me know and I'll include them on this page. Note the archive is at the foot of this page. May 200031 May, 2000 'The Sunday Times Magazine', on 14 May 2000, ran an article by Rob Hughes - 'Troubleshooters. They had the world at their feet. But Best, Gascoigne and Maradona are now more famous for their antics off the pitch. Will tomorrow's heroes be better prepared to tackle the pressures of the game ?' Also included was the following two 'where are they now ?' features. Ralph Coates (Burnley) To quote the article, "to get inside the head of such footballers demands an insight into the profession, and so far only one British player has taken up Sports psychology. Ralph Coates, an England International winger sold by Burnley to Tottenham Hotspur for a then record transfer fee of 190,000 pounds in 1971, is a trained counsellor." Gerd Müller (Star Players of Mexico 1970) Again to quote, "In Germany, Gerd Müller, who scored more goals in fewer international appearances than any player in history, lost his skill, his sports shop, restaurant business and his self-respect when he too turned to drink. Müller is lucky in one thing: his friends and former team-mates have taken over Bayern Munich and in a sense made it his asylum. Franz Beckenbauer (Star Players of Mexico 1970)is the president there, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is the vice- president, Uli Höeness is the general manager.Between them, these players whose achievements were in part made possible by the 365 league goals Müller scored for Bayern and the 68 he scored in 62 appearances for Germany took his rehabilitation in hand and supported his clinical therapy. They now employ . him as a junior coach. The conditions are strict: in return for his job, he must soberly take care of himself and their business." 19 May, 2000 Eric McManus (Coventry City squad) is now one of the directors of the youth academy at Derby County, and is featured in June 2000's Match of the Day Magazine. 15 May, 2000 Glentoran win the Irish Cup ! And before you say 'so what'. Well, the winning goal was scored by Ian Gilzean, Alan's son (Tottenham Hotspur). See Irish Cup Final 2000. Kidd Returns Leeds United have signed up the jobless Brian Kidd (Manchester United) to oversee their youth team. See Leeds United FMC - The Official Web Site 7 May, 2000 Archie Gemmill (Preston North End) Archie was interviewed on Tom Watt's 'The Season Ticket' show on Sports Talk radio station prior to the Scotland v Holland match ( 26/04/00), during which he said that he is currently the European scout for Derby County. This is an increasingly important role for clubs who are looking for cheaper top players abroad than they can find in England. Terry Cooper (Leeds United) has the same role at Southampton. Carlo Sartori (Manchester United) Jim Ross informs us that Carlo 'is now a "Professional knife sharpener servicving hotels and restaurants from his base in Rochdale".This is from the official web site of the again Premeirship Champion Man Utd.' Thanks Jim. Thanks to Mark Allen who writes .. Roy MacFarland (Derby County) is still managing Cambridge as far as I know, and Kevin Hector (Derby County) is now a postman in Derby (he has been ever since stopping playing professionally). 6 May, 2000 Egil Olsen Out For A Burton Egil Olsen was a player in the 1970-71 season ... for either Ostsiden, Sarpsborg, Frigg , or Valerenga. Personally, I'm not going to put Frigg into a search engine for fear of what will come back, so I'll have to settle on accepting Egil onto these pages in a homeless capacity for now. Capped 16 times for Norway in his playing career, Egil has gone on to have a pretty succcessful managerial career ... until this week when Wimbledon sacked him following a 3-0 defeat at Bradford City which took them below Bradford into the Premiership relegation zone with only two games to go. The aimiable Egil has talked of retirement. See The Official Web Site of Wimbledon Football Club In his place, Terry Burton (Arsenal youth) has taken on the role as caretaker manager, promoted from Academy Director.. Terry was actually in the Arsenal team which won the F.A.Youth Cup in 1970-71 against Cardiff City. Indeed, he scored the second goal in a two legged final, giving Arsenal a 2-0 aggregate victory ! In spite of this Terry didn't make it into League football. See The Official Web Site of Wimbledon Football Club Both players are new to Bob's pages and have been added to the Rothmans page. Todd Returns Colin Todd (Sunderland) who was so cruelly sacked by Bolton Wanderers earlier in the season, is the new manager at Swindon Town. The yo-yo-like Robins sacked their manager Jimmy Quinn after the team were relegated to Division Two this season. See Football365 Always a good sign of a club struggling is looking at how their webpages are doing. Swindon Town's official webpage was last updated in 1998 ! Perhaps they could raise money for a new player by selling the URL. See Swindon Town Football Club !!! The Official Web Site of Wimbledon Football Club devotes a page to the great goalkeeper and F.A. Cup legend, Dickie Guy. Though a loyal playerof over 500 games with Wimbledon from 1967 to 1978, Dickie will be best remembered for the 1974-75 season when the then non-League team beat First Division Burnley, and held the mighty Leeds United to a draw. Dickie famously saved a penalty against Peter Lorimer, and went on to be the first non-League recipient of a Rothmans Award. Dickie now lives in Bromley, and runs a building company, Sundridge Park Renovations. Dickie has been added to the Non-League Teams page. 1 May, 2000 John Duncan Chesterfield are relegated from Division Two in bottom place, and up until 12th April their manager was John Duncan, who was a Dundee player back in 1970-71. John's name has been added to the Rothmans page also. See Chesterfield F.C. Return to News index. (Archive below this table)
