Frozen
In Time
The
Observer Sport Monthly must be the best sports
magazine newspaper supplement ever produced.. It
advertises that it is 'Sport Magazine of the Year', and
yet it is 'free' to Sunday Observer newspaper readers.
It always
scores high in the Bob 70-71 Player quota, but none more
so than in the January 2004 no. 47 edition. The magazine
includes a where are they now ? feature, called
"Frozen in Time", along the same lines as the Sunday
Times' "Caught in Time", and in this edition it
actually featured a photograph of a match from the
1970-71 season itself.
The game
was Crystal Palace v Chelsea played on 2 January 1971 in
the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Chelsea were holders of the
cup at the time, and it was played in icy conditions at
Selhurst Park in front of 42,193 spectators. It finished
2-2 - McCormick and Birchenall for Palace, Osgood and
Baldwin for Chelsea - and Chelsea went on to win the
replay 2-0, but were knocked out to Manchester City in
the next round.
There's
even a hint that the magazine used this site in its
research !

Scott (Crystal Palace) Born in Falkirk,
Scott signed for Palace following a successful spell
at Newcastle United. After retiring from football,
the winger returned to Falkirk where he now runs a
pub. He is 63.
John
Hollins (Chelsea) Born in Guildford, Hollins made
his Chelsea debut in 1964 as a 17 year old. After 592
appearances he left for Queens Park Rangers in 1975;
four years later, he joined Arsenal. He returned to
Chelsea in 1983, becoming coach after one season then
manager from 1985 to 1988. Hollins has coached QPR
and managed Swansea, and was caretaker manager at
Stockport for a month this season (2003-2004). Now
57, he was recently linked with Partick Thistle.
Mel
Blyth (Crystal Palace) Born in Norwich,
Blyth left Palace in 1974 to join Southampton where
he won the FA Cup in 1976. Now 59, he lives in London
where he runs his own building firm and coaches
football in schools.
Peter Osgood (Chelsea)
Born in Windsor, Osgood scored more than 200 career
goals, including one in every round of Chelsea's
1969-70 Cup run. Osgood now works as a match-day host
for Southampton (where he won the Cup alongside
Blyth), is a regular on the after-dinner circuit and
also organises celebrity golf days. Now 57, he lives
in Hampshire.
Ron Harris (Chelsea)
Born in Hackney, Harris belied his lack of inches (he
was 5ft 7in) as his tough-tackling reputation earned
him the nickname 'Chopper'. Now 59, he retains close
links with Chelsea and is a regular on the
after-dinner circuit.
Alan
Birchenall (Crystal Palace) East Ham-born
Birchenall was lining up here against hi'; former
club. The former blond bornbshell's locks may have
been replaced by a balding pate, but his loud London
tone remains. He puts it to good use, too, working
for Leicester City (for whom he signed from Palace
tor 100,000 pounds), where he enlivens match-day
proceedings as MC. 'I've still got what every old
footballer misses - the banter of the dressing room',
he says. 'It's vicious. If you're a sensitive peach
in this business, you're b******ed.' He is 58.

McCormick (Crystal Palace) Glaswegian
McCormick was a rugged central defender who formed a
formidable partnership I with Blyth. Now 67, he I
owns a hotel near Glasgow.

with Lewes DC, one of our staff is the legendary JOHN
JACKSON, Palace goalie for many years including
70/71.
John no longer coaches at Brighton and Hove Albion I
understand, but keeps fit.
I nearly fell over when I first saw him, being a
Holmesdale Road regular for many years. It's always
the goalies you remember the clearest, isn't it?

Barrie Fairbrother (Orient)
I have
received an email from the former Orient and Millwall
striker Barrie Fairbrother from the 1970s. He has been
living in Queensland, Australia for the past 26 years and
is selling residential land for the Lend Lease Company.
He says he still follows the Orient results every week
and is please they are moving up the Third Division.

Steve was a Welsh international
footballer, as I'm sure you'll already know, who played
for Cardiff City, Carlisle United, Aldershot,
Rotherham, and Newport County.
The last information I have is
from 'Where are they now?' by Andy Pringle and Neil
Fissler, whose book from 1996 says he was a a
representative for a protective clothing firm in Cardiff.

Bob,
He was a gentle man, a much under-rated player who
gave his heart and soul for his one club (a lost
quality these days). The last I saw of him was on the
bench assisting at Millwall (a role he also
discharged for his country when he finished playing).
Where is he now I wonder - can you help?
