April 2001

George Wood (East Stirling) is the Goalkeeping coach at newly promoted Cardiff City.

Jim Jefferies (Hearts) This excellent profile can be found at Bradford City FC

Jim moved south of the border to join Bradford City on 20 November 2000, two weeks after he quit as Manager of Heart of Midlothian.

As a player he made 349 appearances for Hearts and as Manager led them to 3 Cup Finals, winning the Scottish Cup in 1998 and finishing runners-up in the 1996 Scottish Cup and 1997 League Cup.

His association with Hearts began long before that day five years ago when he signed amateur forms in October 1967. He soon found himself farmed out to Haddington Atheltic and Gala Fairydean before returning to Tynecastle as a professional in 1969.

A tough, uncompromising defender, he made his way through the ranks to make his first team debut on 4 March 1972 in a League match vs East Fife at Methil. He then became a permanent fixture in the side at full back, centre half or as a midfield marker/ball winner.

He took part in the 1976 Scottish Cup Final when Hearts went down 3-1 to Rangers and the following season played in Hearts' famous Cup Winners Cup victory over Locomotiv Leipzig.

He left Tynecastle in November 1981 to sign for Berwick Rangers and after a brief spell with the Borders club gave up playing to take a position in the insurance industry.

However he was not out of the game for long when he was appointed manager of his local club Lauder United Amateurs. He then went to Hawick Royal Albert before taking over at Gala Fairydean, whom he insipired to a succession of honours.

Accordingly Berwick Rangers appointed him Manager in December 1988 and he transformed their fortunes through some clever dealing in the transfer market. But his most astute appointment was that of Billy Brown as his assistant. The partnership became established as one of the strongest in the Scottish game and has been continued at Bradford City.

Both moved to Falkirk in 1990 where they guided the Bairns to two Division 1 Championships and one B&Q Cup in December 1993.

In the summer of 1995 an offer was made by Hearts for the pair to join them at Tynecastle.

When Jim Jefferies left in November 2000 having been in charge for over five years, he was at the time the SPL's longest serving Manager.

He left Tynecastle having been in charge for over five years and at the time was the SPL's longest serving Manager.

Steve
Smith (Huddersfield Town)

Likewise the following profile can be found at Bradford City FC

Steve's career in football began as an apprentice at Huddersfield Town Football Club where he was later to return to take charge as Chief Scout, Youth Team Manager, Reserve Team Manager and eventually Manager, this appointment coming when Mick Buxton was sacked.

Steve managed to stave off relegation at Leeds Road, the Terriers' former ground before they moved to the Alfred McAlpine Stadium. Unfortunately the following season things didn't go their way and the ambitious Huddersfield Chairman decided it was time for a change and a big name was needed. Malcolm McDonald was subsequently appointed.

Now at Bradford City, Steve has the responsibility of coaching the Youth players who have been brought into the Club, many of them coming via the Centre of Excellence of which he is Centre Director.

John Charles

Bob

Great to see a site of the old players, I've been trying to find a site with my dad in it for a long time now.

John moved to Spain for a while with my mum Carol, however has recently moved back to Ilford Essex.

Keep up the good work, and if you know of any other sites I would appreciate it.

Cheers

Mitch Charles

Thanks for that Mitch I really appreciate the comments and the pictures you've sent, thanks again.(See John's page for pictures sent by Mitch).
