1 Benfica smashed the Yugoslavian side, Olympia Lubliana, 8-1 in the second leg of the Cup Winners Cup, to qualify for the next round 9-2 . . . Real Madrid, having been held to a goal less draw by Hibernian in Malta, smoothed through 5-0 . . . nearer home, in the all-Irish game, Derry City qualified for the next round of the Texaco Cup, by eliminating Limerick 4-3 . .

2 Bristol C. signed 26-year-old Steve Stacey from Ipswich T. at 5,500 pound fee. . . Stacey had been on loan for a month and Ipswich T. held out for7,000 pound fee. . . This was reduced by an F.A. enquiry . . . Scottish Referees Committee ordered fourteen days suspension for Bertie Auld, of Celtic. . . Announced that Littlewoods Results Pool to be replaced by 12 match Points Pool from October 24 . . . In an amateur international match, England beat Iceland 4-1 . . . Alan Birchenall put back into action by injection into knee by specialist. . . Following Saturday scored first goal (after being out for three weeks) in 3-1 win against Southampton . . . Palace Manager Bert Head defended decision to raise prices for Arsenal match, pointing out that these were the prices chargcd in the previous season, before being lowered for 1970-71 . . . 13 Hard-up Peterborough U's. request for 50,000 pound loan turned down by city's Developments Corporation. . . Henry Newton, Nottingham F. defender, signed by Everton in 150,000 pound deal involving Tom Jackson in part-exchange . . . full back Alan Campbell from Coleraine to Grimsby T.; Wimbledon beat a C. 18 Oporto, managed by Tommy Docherty, drew in Portuguese League 2-2 with Benfica, managed by Jimmy Hagan . . . in Spanish League, Bilbao (managed by Ronnie Allen) and Barcelona (Vic Buckingham) both won. . .

Malcolm Partridge, Leicester C's. 50,000 pounds signing from Mansfield T., broke his left elbow at Birmingham, and was out of the game for five weeks. . . Soccer sensation as John Battersby, one of the most powerful men in soccer, announced his resignation as Secretary of Chelsea, after 22 years. . . he was previously thirteen years with the Football Association at Lancaster Gate. . .

21 Everton forced a European Cup draw at Moenchengladbach, and Celtic won a slaughter in Ireland, beating Waterford 7-0 . . . in the Cup Winners Cup, Tommy Baldwin's goal beat CSKA in Sofia, and Francis Lee's efforts similarly gained a single goal margin against Honved . . . Cardiff C. looked a certainty for the next round with a 5-1 win over Nantes . . . After one leg of their Fairs Cup games, Dundee U. were 1-3 down, Liverpool 3 up, Leeds U. l-0 in front, Newcastle U. 2 up, and Arsenal one down in Austria. Wolverhampton W. won their Texaco Cup match 3-0, but Tottenham H's. 3-2 home margin against Motherwell proved to be not enough. . . Oxford U., who on September 26 had topped the Second Division for the first time in their history, suffered their second successive home defeat and slumped to sixth place. . . Blackburn R. switched the managerial duties. . . Quigley took over Carey's job as admin. manager, handing the team duties to Johnny Carey. . . Real Madrid suffered a humiliating Cup Winners Cup defeat, 0-1 at home, to Wacker of Vienna. . .

22 Billy Bonds, of West Ham U., suspended for five weeks, fined 100 pounds, and ordered to pay 20 pounds costs, for 'spitting' at a Hull C. player in a League cup-tie . . . Jimmy Conway, Fulham and Eire striker, due for cartilage operation. . .

23 Tony Pocock, publishing company sales manager and club supporter for 25 years. appointed director of Charlton Ath., who announced plans to turn The Valley into a sports centre on the lines of Real Madrid. . .

24 London has four teams in top five of First Division as C. Palace, their best gate of season, 41,486 watching the 1-1 draw with West Ham U., moved into fourth place . . . in order behind Leeds U., Arsenal, Tottenham H., C. Palace, Chelsea. . . a goal by 16-year-old Derek Johnstone, gave Rangers the Scottish League Cup over the holders, Celtic, before 106,000 crowd at Hampden Park. . . Burnley (14 games), Barrow and Newport Co. (15) only clubs still without a win. . . Herbert Metcalfe 63, who tried hard to keep Bradford Park Avenue in the League (they were voted out in favour of Cambridge U.) died in a Bradford hotel. . . Guildford captain Darby Watts, ordered off against Cheshunt in F .A. Cup-tie, after only two minutes play. . .

25 A result from the Austrian League emphasised the sensational mid-week defeat of Real Madrid. . . Wacker, Vienna (bottom club) home, 2, Salzburg 6. . .

26 Walsall supporters protested when they heard that their Division Three match, set for January 2, would be switched to Wolverhampton W. ground. . . eventually held at Walsall's ground, with 19,000 gate and record receipts. . . David Gardiner, of Unity Social, banned for twelve months after incidents in the Warley Alliance game. . . Leslie Shannon resigned from Blackpool, and Jimmy Meadows took over as manager. . .

27 Norwich C. forward Neil O'Donnell, who asked for move in September, requested to be taken off the list. . . After spending œ10,000 on extra lamps for floodlight installation, as requested by television companies, Chelsea caused stir by putting up the charges for matches from 150 pounds to 250 pounds. . . 'we're not graspers' says Chelsea Chairman Brian Nears, 'we are asking for the extra for only the first five matches. It will still take us ten years to get the money back.'

28 Tony Hateley rejoined Notts. Co. for 20.000pounds from Birmingham C., thus returning to his first club, which he had left eight seasons and six clubs back. . . estimated his own personal share of the fees totalled 20,000 pounds out of the 400,000 pounds his wanderings had cost. . . Birmingham C. also recalled George Johnson, on loan from Walsall, to sign for Fulham . . . these two sales sent the transfer sales for the season to over œ1 million in eleven weeks. . . Aston Villa reached quarter finals of Football League Cup with 1-0 win over Carlisle U. . . . C. Palace held at home 0-0 by Arsenal . . . Tottenham H. 5 (Peters 3 Gilzean 2) W .B.A. 0 . . . and Chelsea lost to a wonder goal by George Best at Old Trafford . . . In the return Nations Cup Sweden beat Eire by one goal to nil. . . and although Hibernian lost 2-1 in Portugal, progressed in the Fairs Cup with an overall aggregate of 3-2 over Vitoria Guimaraes . . . Charlton Ath. used up some of the money received from the Campbell transfer to pay Tottenham H. 25,000 pounds for Dennis Bond and 5,000 pounds for Derek Belotti, the Gillingham goalkeeper as cover for their brilliant and colourful keeper Charlie Wright.

29 The six major Pools firms announced that when decimalisation comes into force in February the new stakes would cost more, roughly a twenty per cent increase in stake money. . . Fulham took over at the head of the Ford Sporting League with 36 points, one more than Oldham Ath. . . . Martin Peters won the Daily Mail Footballer of the Week Award, following the first week winner of Terry Cooper . . . in the draw for the quarter finals of the League Cup, the two Third Division sides, Aston Villa and Bristol R. were paired. . . other ties drawn Fulham v Leicester C. or Bristol C.; Tottenham H. v Coventry C.; Manchester U. v Arsenal or C. 30 Bournemouth give first game to John Benson, signed two days previously from Torquay U. . . . and George Johnson makes his debut for Fulham . . . announced Portsmouth made a loss of 57,985 pounds on previous year. . .

31 Rodney Marsh, chosen to captain Q.P.R. for first time (at Millwall), shaved off his beard in order to fulfil the dignity of the occasion. . . unfortunately Millwall won 3-0 . . . when a linesman pulled a muscle during the Liverpool v Wolverhampton W. game, his place was taken by Mr. J. Collihole, a first class referee from Watford, who was watching his last game before emigrating to Australia. . . Mike Trebilcock scored a hat trick for Portsmouth against Blackburn R. in the first sixteen minutes. . . Burnley, playing C. Palace, fielded six members of the team which won the F .A. Youth Cup in 1968, and then won their first league game of the season. . . Joe Baker's goal for Sunderland was the first conceded at home by Luton T. in eight games, and Sunderland won 2-1 . . . Luigi Riva broke a leg playing for Italy against Austria in Vienna.
