Jimmy Adamson takes over at Sunder land , . . Pools Panel in operation as weather worsens . , . Duncan McKenzic transfers from Anderlecht to Everton . . . Brace Rioch follows him a couple of days later... Derek Hales moves to Derby,.. Alec Stock quits at Fulham... Alan Hudson goes to Arsenal.

1 Dave Webb scores the winning goal for QPR against Arsenal in the League Cup Quarter-final. Earlier, an Alan Ball penalty is saved by Phil Parkes ... Aston Villa beat Milhvall in the same com petition, and surprise away winners Bolton (at Derby) and Everton (at Manchester United) complete the last four . . . After days of negotiations, Everton withdraw their bid for Duncan McKenzie of Anderlecht.., Jimmy Adamson is appointed manager at Sunderland. His assistant will be lan MacFarlane, who has been acting as caretaker manager since Bob Stokoe's resignation.

2 Everton make a bid forBruce Rioch of Derby.

3 Sheffield United end Chelsea's unbeaten sequence with an Ian Hamilton penalty.

4 Due to wholesale postponements, the Pools Panel is called into action for the first time since December 1973. Of the matches played, the eagerly awaited Ipswich v Liverpool clash ends in a 1-0 win for the home learn. Paul Mariner heads the winning goal. Now, Ipswich are only one point behind Liverpool with a game in hand ... Malcolm Macdonald scores his first hat-trick for Arsenal against his old club, Newcastle in a 5-3 win . . . Kcnny Burns also gets three in Birmingham's 6-2 victory at Leicester... A penalty given against Orient for a foul committed by Derek Clarke is missed by his brother Frank, the Carlisle striker, but Carlisle win 1-0.

6 Rioch turns down Everton's offer, but manager Bingham secures the £200,000 transfer of Duncan McKenzie from Anderlecht.... Following a stormy Cup replay between Crystal Palace and Brighton at Stamford Bridge, the seasiders manager, Alan Mullcry, rushes on the pitch and argues with referee Ron Challis. He also gestures to the crowd, and talking to the Press blames the referee for 'stealing' the match from Brighton. The controversy centres around a twice-taken penalty .. .Ted Croker says that England are in a stronger position in the World Cup than Italy because our rivals have two more difficult away games to play.

7 Dave Clement is sent off at Cologne in the 43rd minute, but the '10-men' QPR hold out, and go into the Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Cup on a 4-4 aggregate with the help of an away goal.. . Ipswich continue their excellent run with a 4-2 win at Birmingham, and are now on top of the League table with one point to spare ... Gerry Peyton, Fulham's new goalkeeper from Burnley, is included in England's Under-21 squad. But Peyton, born in Birmingham of Southern Irish parents, says that he would rather play for the Republic of Ireland. 'Over-age' players, Trevor Francis and Brian Talbot, are in the squad in order to give Don Revic an idea of iheir adaptability to international football.

8 Bruce Rioch changes his mind once again and signs for Everton—£200,000 . . . AC Milan and Red Star Belgrade are eliminated in Ihe UEFA Cup, but favourites Juventus, Barcelona and Feyenoord survive ... A friendly against Manchester United raises nearly £8000 for Newport County ... A Nottinghamshire County Councillor suggests that football hooligans should be hosed-down with water jets. The town authorities are concerned about Chelsea's forthcoming visit. The recent behaviour of the London club's fans gives reasonable cause for anxiety.

9 David Mills is on the transfer list at Middlesbrough, and several clubs show interest... Alan Mullery is charged with 'bringing the game into disrepute' after he was reported to the FA by referee Ron Challis.

10 lan MacFarlane is sacked at Sunderland. He has been in full charge between the dismissal of Stokoe and the appointment of Jimmy Adamson.

11 The Pools Panel operates again as 29 games are postponed and five abandoned in League and Cup on both sides of the border. But Liverpool do play and beat QPR. 3-1, which puts them on top of the League again as Ipswich are without a match ... Andy Gray scores with two headers in Aston Villa's 3-1 win at Leeds. He now leads the Div. One scoring list with 15 ... Kettering are the only non-league side to be sure of a place in Round 3 of the FA Cup, but Goole and Hitchin earn replays at Wrexham and S win don respectively.

12 Charlton striker Derek Hales becomes the costliest player to leave the Second Division as Derby pays an estimated £280,000 for him. Colin Murphy, Derby's acting manager, who has been involved in deals worth half-a-million during the last few days says: 'Whatever happens about the managerial situation, I am certain that Hales will be a great asset to Derby'.., John Bond and Tony Book offer solutions to free soccer from the vagaries of winter. Book calls for Summer Football with a complete shut-down during the winter. Bond says that the entire programme should be postponed when the grounds are not fit to play—whatever the referee says.

33 The pre-Christmas London transfer spree continues. Arsenal buy Alan Hudson from Stoke for £200,000, and let John Radford go to West Ham for £80,000 .. . Alan Sunderland of Wolves is called into the England squad for the influenza victim Trevor Francis ... The Third Round of the FA Cup draw is made once again on a Monday—holders, Southampton are home to Chelsea, and league leaders Liverpool meet Crystal Parace at Anfield. The other ties include five all-First Division clashes.. A late Possee goal gives Orient a 1-1 draw against Notts. F. at home in the first leg of the Anglo-Scottish Cup Final.

14 The long-rumoured changes at Fulham are announced officially. Alec Stock quits as manager and refuses to stay on in an advisory capacity. Tommy Trinder becomes 'Life President', and Guy Libby, a Surrey stockbroker, is the new Chairman. The Icam, in front of their lowest gate since the acquisition of Best, beat Blackburn 2-0 ... Northwich Victoria from the Northern Premier League beat Peterborough 4^0 in the FA Cup, but Goole fail against Wrexham in a replay.

15 Liverpool are beaten 5-1 at Aston Villa—their heaviest League defeat since 1963. All the goals are scored in the first half—two of them by Andy Gray, who now leads Division One with 17 ... In a tough match Derby draw with Arsenal 0-0—a mediocre debut for Hales. Acting manager Murphy complains about Arsenal's tactics, and reveals that Derby made an offer to Bill Shankly to join them in an advisory capacity ... Nottingham F. beat Orient 4-0 to clinch the Anglo-Scottish Cup ... In their first ever official Under-21 international, England draw with Wales 0-0 at Wolverhampton.

16 Bobby Campbell is promoted into the manager's chair at Fulham . .Sammy Nelson is suspended for three matches.

18 West Ham defeat Liverpool 2-0—the champions' third defeat in four games. Now they are level on points with Ipswich on top of the table. . . . Norwich win at Sunderland, but their recent signing Graham Paddon suffers a broken leg... Mick Channon scores a hat-trick, and Duncan McKenzie gets his first goals—one from a penalty—back in English football... Sam Bolton, former chairman of Leeds, dies

at the age of 82. He was chairman of the FA Cup Committee and a Life Member of the FA and Football League.

20 George Best is allowed to carry on playing for Fulham—his case is not even discussed at the League meeting... Gordon Banks will go to the USA and play for the Miami Tornados . . . Two managers sign long-term contracts for their clubs. Gordon Jago will stay with Millwall for at least three years, and Bob Paisley is assured job security at Liverpool for life.

21 Dixie Deans of Luton is sent off at Bolton, where the home team's 2-1 win puts them into second place in Division 2 ... John Newman, manager of Exeter, joins Grimsby.

22 Alan Ball beats the Christmas deadline and joins Southampton for a £60,000 fee. Lawrie McMenerny says: 'He is a grafter, will do well in the Second Division1. Ball says: 'Terry Neill wanted new faces at Arsenal. I chose Southampton because of manager McMenemy' . . . Chelsea's game at Nottingham against County is switched to a Friday night in January to avoid crowd trouble on a Saturday. Alan Hardaker attacks the decision. 'Before they consulted the League, they, the police, made statements which implied that we are in a situation when hooliganism cannot be contained. This decision aggravated the situation, and will cost money to the clubs.'

24 Mike Summerbee joins Blackpool on a free transfer from Burnley.

27 Over 900,000 spectators watch the Boxing Day fixtures. Ipswich, without Mariner, draw at Coventry, and as Liverpool beat Stoke 4-0, they are back on top of the table. Dennis Smith is sent off in this match ,.. Willie Young is dismissed at Tottenham where Arsenal draw 2-2 . . . David Mills, transfer-listed Middlesbrough striker, scores a hat-trick in the 3-2 home win over Aston Villa ... Leeds lose at home, and Jimmy Armfield has a confrontation with his players after the match behind a closed dressing room door . . . George Armstrong, an Arsenal pro. for 14 years, walks out on the club. He refuses to travel with the team because the club won't grant him a transfer. He says: Terry Neill promised me a transfer. But he let Ball and Cropley go, and now he says that the club needs me.' Neill answers: 'The door is still open. I would like him to reconsider'.

28 Away wins for Bolton and Millwall give these clubs a lift in the promotion race... Rotherham go on top in Division 3 ... Franz Beckenbauer is elected 'European Footballer of the Year' for the second time in his career. Renscnbrink of Anderlecht is second, and the Czech goalkeeper Viktor is third. Kevin Keegan is fourth ahead of Platini of France.

29 The Armstrong dispute is over at Arsenal. For the time being the veteran winger is staying with the club . . . Due to bad weather 17 jeague games are postponed, but at Maine Road, Manchester City draw with Liverpool Joe Royle gets the opening goal for City, and in the 89th minute a Callaghan cross is headed by Dave Watson past his own goalkeeper.. .Chelsea suffer their heaviest defeat of the season at Luton - 0-4... Newcastle pay £80,000 for Chesterfield 'keeper, Steve Hardwick. The same club produced such fine goalkeepers as Gordon Banks, Ray Middleton, and Alan Stevenson.

30 A New Year's message to the football fraternity from Don Revie: 'We face two World Cup games, home and away, against Luxembourg and a possible Wembley decider against Italy. The task is far from impossible. Our destiny is in our hands. My own concern is to marry the best of our domestic game with a realisation that what we produce al home every Saturday is not ideal for international competition. At home we give the fans what they want - football played at 100 miles an hour. We have been bred on that kind of all-action game and in its own way it typifies the English game. But at international level I doubt if this is where we can achieve progress. We need to slow down and work more at the skilful aspects of our game.'

31 A fresh dispute between the Football League and Fulham. The Second Division club asks the League to sanction Best's registration. Certain conditions outlined by the League seem to discriminate against the much-travelled player, and would prevent him leaving Futham before the end of the season. If others are allowed to go and play in the USA during the English season, why not Best? asks Fulham.
