The red and yellow cards system is introduced into English League football . . . controversy over the plan to postpone League games to accommodate World Cup preparations ... An entire team is up for sale . . . another poor England performance - this time in the World Cup . . . Slokoe resigns at Sunderland.

1 Colin Todd adds lo the general unrest at Derby by asking for a transfer . . . Another international at loggerheads with his club is Alan Hudson, who didn't want to play for Stoke on Wednesday. Hudson is fined, and warned as to his future behaviour.

2 Yellow and Red cards are introduced into English League football, and the first player to receive a red card is David Wagstaffe, the veteran Blackburn winger . . . George Best is also dismissed at Southampton, where he protests against a free-kick. Paignton referee Lester Shapter sends him off for 'using foul and abusive language1. Southampton win their first League game of the season 4-1, but Derby and Sunderland are Still without a win in the First Division. The former lose 5-1 at Birmingham, and the latter 1-0 at home lo Everton . . . There are 85 arrests at Leeds, where Manchester United win 2-0 ... Billy Bremner scores the only goal of the match for his new club Hull v Nottingham Forest . . . Peter Taylor also makes a scoring debut, but Tottenham are beaten at West Brom,

3 Colin Todd is slaying with Derby, and will be given a long-ierm contract to give him the security he wanls . . . Statistics published today congratulate Ted MacDougall on scoring 200 league goals - the first Scot to do so since Denis Law. Another 'Scottish' record - Kenny Burns is the first Scot to score four goals in a Division One match since 1966, when David Herd and Andy Lochhead did that for Manchester United aud Burnley respectively.

4 A Gerry Daly penalty seconds from the end of a League Cup tie at Sunderland keeps Manchester United in the competition . . . Two Bruce Rioch goals help Derby into the next round at Notts County . . . Ray Trcacy is back in the Eire squad for the friendly against Turkey. Fulham are involved in yet another sensational rumpus. Bolton equalize in the sixth minute added on for 'lime-wasting'. When the Fulham players protest, referee Kevin McNally sends off Bobby Moore, the ex-England skipper. To cool the situation manager Alec Stock takes the team off the field. The referee, in the company of two policemen, issues an ultimatum that unless Fulham are back on the pitch within two minutes he'll abandon the tie in favour of the home team, Bolton. Ten-man Fulham return and the League Cup replay ends in a draw . . . Arsenal beat Blackpool and will meet Chelsca in Round Four . . . Wolverhatnpton, 6-1 winners at the weekend at Hereford, lose at home 6-2 to revived Southampton . . . After a goalless first half, Brighton go on a scoring spree against Walsall and win 7-0! Peter Ward gets four in 23 minutes and lan Mellor a hat-trick in 19 minutes.

6 Bobby Moore escapes last night's sending-off - the second of his career, and the first since 1961 - without a ban, because according to the referee's report, he was dismissed for 'persistent misconduct'. Alec Stock says that he will go to the highest court in the land to obtain justice for Moore and for Fulham. Alan Hardaker reacts by saying that the veteran Fulham manager should have waited until a League decision was announced concerning the waik-out . . . Wales lose 2-0 at Cardiff against West Germany in their Centenary international. Franz Beckea-bauer, in his 101st game for his country, scores the first, and Jupp Heynckes the second goal . , . Frank Munro at Wolves and Phil Boyer at Norwich are taken off the transfer list . . . Manchester Uruled finally defeat Sunderland in the League Cup with a 1-0 win after 300 minutes of football.

7 Clubs complain of losing money through re-arrangement of matches from Saturdays to weekdays due to internationals. Leicester will apply for compensation to the FA. Don Revie says: 'According to some people we only have two world-class players. In that case the team need as much organisation as possible!' . . . Portsmouth selJ Paul Went for £30,000 to Cardiff, lan St. John, their manager, says: 'It's a bargain price, we had to do a deal to save the club' . . . Noel Cantwell puts the entire Peterborough squad on transfer. They were beaten 3-0 at home by Chesterfield, and Cantwell said that several of his players are no longer good enough to represent the club.

9 A crowd invasion of the pitch causes the abandonment of the friendly between Rangers and Aston Villa at Birmingham. Hundreds of fans throw bottles on the pitch and there follows a fierce battle with the police. More than a hundred fans are injured and fifty arrested. Denis Howell, who is at (he match, will discuss the events with the Home Secretary. Rangers' manager Willie Waddell says; This is the worst thing thai has happened to us since Barcelona 1972. After this, no club will ever invite us for friendlies' . . . Newly appointed Chesterfield manager Arthur Cox sees his team beat Reading 4-0 . . . Middlesbrough beat Norwich 1-0 in the only First Division match of ihe day and go on top of Division One for the first time since 1950 . . . Derek Hales gets his second hat-trick of the season, and has now scored 11 goals in nine League matches.

11 Don Givens asks for a transfer, because he is upset by the sporadic barracking of the home fans at Loftus Road . . . Revie selects an attacking England side against Finland. The 4-2-4 formation includes winger Dennis Tueart, who is back in the side after 18 month's absence . . . 'Pop' Robson is back at West Ham from Sunderland for £80,000 . . . Joe Martucci, Secretary of the Police Federation, suggests that bi^-time pro football should be suspended for one year to stop hooliganism. This drastic measure is promptly rejected by the clubs, but Aston Villa put a ban on all Scottish ciubs unless the Midlanders draw Scottish opponents in a European competition ... In the meantime one Rangers fan is jailed for six months by a Birmingham magistrale, and many others are fined heavily.

13 Yet another disappointing Wembley performance by England. An early Royle goal fails to inspire ihe team and Finland snatch an equalizer in the World Cup qualifier. A second goal gives England victory but the goal difference - a miserly 2-1 - and the manner of the victory leaves a great deal to be desired. Revie says: 'My first job is to apologize to the 92,000 crowd. They came to support us, but we didn't produce' ... In other ties, Scotland lose 2-0 against Czechoslovakia in Prague. Andy Gray of Aston Villa and the Czech defender Ondrus are sent off in the first half. Panenka and Petras score in the second half, halting the Scots' nine-match unbeaten run . . . Danny Blanchflower's Northern Ireland provide the best result of the day by drawing 2-2 at Rotterdam. George Best, back in the national leani after three years' absence, outshines Johan Cruyff, and Pat Jennings is outsianding in goal . . . Willie Johnston of WBA is suspended for five matches for bringing the game into disrepute.

14 An FA inquiry clears Villa of any blame for the riot last Saturday . . . £15,000 Ricky Heppolette moves from Orient lo Crystal Palace . . . Chris McGrath, who played well for Northern Ireland on Wednesday, leaves ihe Spurs reserves bench for Manchester United for £30,000.

15 Tommy Docherty says, following the McGrath deal: 'The days of the big deals are over for this club, and we are one of the few who can afford them. It is stupid these daystopay £200,000 for a player. Clubs doing it are heading for financial ruin' . . . QPR rejects a transfer request from Don Givens . . . Alan Hardakcr refuses to postpone two League games scheduled for mid-week in order lo accommodate Northern Ireland. The tie against Belgium on November 10 is a week earlier lhan the 'official' free dale, and the League Secretary says: 'I am not going to be threatened by Blanchflowcr or anyone else. The Irish have created this situation themselves' . . . Derek Spence goes to Blackpool from Bury for a fee of £50,000 . . . Glasgow Rangers, in an effort to improve their fans' behaviour, announce changes in the club's policy. In future they will sign players irrespective of their religion, and the singing of sectarian songs will be discouraged. The measures were welcomed by Church leaders, but James McLean, a leader of the Loyal Orange Institution, said: 'I have no doubt some will stay away from matches. People may be religious bigots, but it doesn't mean they are hooligans.'

16 Italy open their World Cup bid with a 4-1 win at Luxembourg, a result regarded by Don Revie as 'reasonable' as far as England are concerned ... In the League, Derby register their first win of the season in spectacular fashion, 8-2 v Tottenham with converted striker Bruce Rioch scoring four times. This is Spurs heaviest-ever defeat . . . Liverpool beat Everton 3-1 in the local Derby and go back on top of the First Division. Stragglers Norwich, Bristol City, West Ham, and Sunderland are all beaten at home . . . Chelsea and Brighton continue to lead Divisions Two and Three, but in the Fourth, Bradford City take over on top . . . Derek Hales scores twice in Charlton's 4-4 draw at Burnley and is the League's top goal-getter with 13 ... Terry Paine plays his 806th and last league game. He finishes his career where he started it - at "The Dell' Southampton, playing for Hereford against his old club.

18 Bob Stokoe resigns at Sunderland. During his four-year stay at the club Sunderland have won the FA Cup and only last May won promotion back into the First Division. But they haven't won a League game yet this season despite substantial spending on new players. After Saturday's home defeat Stpkoe offered his resignation, which was accepted by the Board . . . UEFA lifts the ban on Wales for the next European Championship, but they must not play their home matches at Ninian Park, scene of crowd trouble against Yugoslavia earlier this year. The conversion of the ban into a fine is a personal triumph for the Welsh FA Secretary Trevor Morris, who fought the case on his own at the UEFA meeting . . . Bolton beat Fulham 2-1 in their second League Cup replay . . . Both Tommy Docherty and Terry Neill say that they will help Northern Ireland by releasing players for their World Cup match against Belgium.

19 Millwall end the marathon League Cup tie v Orient with a 3-0 win at Highbury . . . Liverpool complain about their accommodation in Turkey before the European Cup tie at Trabzonspor. 'It is like a doss house,' says manager Paisley. 'We are just here to give them a good hiding.'

20 Liverpool lose 1-0 in the European Cup through a Cemil penalty given for a foul by Emlyn Hughes . . . Southampton register an easy win in Northern Ireland, but the UEFA Cup contenders have mixed luck . . . Manchester United can only win 1-0 against Juventus - the identical score to that of the neighbouring City in the previous round . . . QPR draw at Bratislava against Slovan, and Derby lose 2-0 at Athens . . . Reflections vary from Paisley's complaint: "The ball was like a pig's bladder', to Docherty's criticism: 'I thought the refereeing was very poor' to Sexton's pride: 'I was pleased with the way we hit back all the time' . . . Two surprises in the European Cup - Real Madrid fail to beat Bruges at home, and Torino lose 2-1 at home to Moenchengladbach . . . Tottenham recover from Saturday's 2-8 defeat by getting two points off Birmingham, with Keith Osgood scoring the only goal of the match at White Hart Lane.

22 Paul Mariner of Plymouth joins Ipswich in a deal which also involves John Peddelty and Terry Austin. The total value is £220,000.

23 Middlesbrough are back on top of the League after a 1-0 win over WBA . . . David McNiven equalizes for Leeds against Liverpool in injtiry time at Elland Road . . . Derek Hales scores again for Charlton, thus establishing a new record for the club - the first player to score in seven consecutive matches . . . Chelsea, Brighton, and Bradford City lead the other divisions.

25 David Nish is out for the season with a knee injury . . . Alf Wood, freed by Hull, is wanted by Middlesbrough.

26 A season's best crowd of 52,000 see Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 at Highbury in the League Cup. Brian Bason is taken off with a broken leg early in the game, then Rpss scores for Arsenal. Hay equalizes but within 40 seconds Stapleton heads the winner ... At Brighton the home team take record receipts against Derby. Ward scores in 37 seconds, Derby draw level through James . . . The Scottish FA reject an appeal from Willie Young to lift the life suspension from international football . . . David Carlton, a midfielder, joins Brentford from Northampton for £3000.

27 Manchester United score their biggest victory under Tommy Docherty's management, beating Newcastle 7-2 in the League Cup. Gordon Hill gets a hat-trick . . . Millwall and Aston Villa are the other teams to reach the quarter-finals tonight.

28 Norman Hunter leaves Leeds following the earlier departures of Giles and Bremner. At the age of 33, the ex-England defender joins Bristol City for £40,000 . . . The Alf Wood move to Middlesbrough is completed . , . West Ham buy Anton Otulakowski from Barnsley for £60,000. Barnsley collect a further £50,000 from Newcastle for Martin Gorry . . . Colin Bell of Manchester City is ready for reserve team action after a year out of football through injury.

29 Alfie Conn is back in the Spurs side as a central striker. Both lan Moores an4 Chris Jones are dropped for the match against Everton . . . West Ham chairman Reg Pratt criticizes the behaviour of Keith Robson. The temperamental forward was booked on Wednesday during the tie v QPR . . . Orient obtain £5000 damages from an advertizing agency which refuses to pay the fee because the team are playing 'unattractive football and do not attract the TV cameras'.

30 Liverpool earn a three-point lead in the First Division with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. lan Callaghan scores his first goal of the season in this match . . . Trevor Francis outshines his rival for a place in the England squad, Stan Bowles, in Birmingham's 2-1 win over QPR . . . Sunderland register their first League win when they beat Coventry 2-1 with goals by expensive signing Bob Lee and Billy Hughes . . . Norman Hunter is booked at Derby in his debut for Bristol City . . . Chelsea's best crowd for over three years - 42,654 - see them beat Southampton 3-1 in a stormy match. Now they are four clear points ahead of Blackpool and Wolves who draw 2-2 at Bloomfield Road.

31 Archie Gemmill is suspended for three matches by FIFA. The referee of the recent Czechoslovakia v Scotland match reported that he dismissed No. 10 Gemmill, when in fact it was Andy Gray who was sent off.
