ease off at Chelsea . . . Terry Neill is the new Arsenal
manager, and signs Malcolm Macdonald for £333,333 ...
Other managerial changes occur almost daily.
1 A few more close season transfer deals are finalized -
Brian Hall from Liverpool to Plymouth for £35,000. Brian
Kidd from Arsenal to Manchester City for £100,000 and
Martin Chivers from Tottenham to Servette Zurich for
£80,000 . . . The ban on Real Madrid is lifted by UEFA,
but the Spanish Champions must play their next three
competitive home cup matches 300 kilometres away from
their own ground.
2 Chelsea receive 12 months moratorium from their
creditors, but they are told that the club must not
borrow any more money, and must break even during the
coming season.
5 John Hulme of Bury is appointed as manager of the Swiss
club, Le Chaux-de-Fonds.
8 It is confirmed that Terry Neill will take over
Arsenal. He had been a player with the Gunners for 11
years.
9 John Mortimore is appointed as manager of the top
Portuguese club, Benfica . . . Ninian Park, Cardiff,
scene of the crowd disturbances which have led to Wales
being banned from the next European Championship, is to
be completely fenced off. Trevor Morris, Welsh FA
Secretary says: 'We have invited Cardiff officials to
discuss security details and the.question of finance' . .
. Coach Bobby Campbell leaves Arsenal in the wake of
Neill's arrival.
13 Gunter Netzer leaves Real Madrid for Grasshoppers of
Zurich. The Danish-born Jensen of Moenchengladbach
replaces him at Real.
14 Coach Keith Burkinshaw is promoted to the job of
manager at Tottenham. Assistant manager Wilf Dixon moves
to Arsenal to team up once again with Terry Neill. His
place at Spurs goes to Pat Welton, who has been in charge
of their Youth team.
15 The Saudi Arabian squad is in Coventry for a six-week
training spell under new manager Bill McGarry . . . Alan
Whittle joins Sheffield United on a free transfer.
16 Alan Mullery takes over as manager at Brighton. The
ex-England player fills the vacancy left by Peter Taylor,
who has resigned.
17 The managerial musical chairs game continues - Taylor
teams up with his old partner Brian Clough at Nottingham
Forest, and Bobby Campbell, recently deposed Arsenal
coach, goes to Fulham as chief coach. It is the fourth
time that Clough and Taylor have jointly run a team -
previous clubs: Hartlepool, Derby, Brighton . . . Clough
also signs Sean Haslegrave from Stoke.
18 The Olympic Games Football Tournament opens with two
surprise draws - East Germany drop a point against
Brazil, and Poland finish level with Cuba.
19 Trevor Francis is fined £100 for making derogatory
remarks about his own club, Birmingham, Manager Willie
Bell is reported as saying: 'Francis is not for sale. He
must not criticize our squad in public. He'll be telling
us how to cut the grass next' . . . Roger Davies signs
for Bruges, Belgian champions, in a £135,000 deal.
20 Bill Nicholson returns to Tottenham as chief adviser
to new Spurs manager Keith Burkinshaw . . .Harry Potts
also returns to his old club as Chief Scout at Burnley.
22 The Chelsea players volunteer to take a cut in their
pay packets in order to help the club's finances.
Chairman Brian Mears says: 'Any cynicism I had about
footballers has now been swept away.'
24 Gary Jones joins Birmingham from Everton for
£110,000.
26 Tommy Docherty travels to Canada to meet Alan Foggon
of Middlesbrough, who is playing for a club in America.
As a result of the 6800-mile trip Foggon signs for
Manchester United for £40,000.
27 Paul Bennett of Southampton goes to Reading for
£8000.
29 The biggest transfer of the close season takes place
when Malcolm Macdonald signs for Arsenal from Newcastle
for a £333,333 fee - the first major deal for new
manager Terry Neill.
31 Surrey businessman Ernie Clay becomes the executive
director of Fulham with the overall responsibility of
running the club.
