Southampton
win the Cup . .. Lheipool win the League Championship and
the UEFA ^ Cup ... Scotland are British Champions ...
Malcolm Alllsoo haves Crystal Palace... England do well
in the American Bicentennial Tournament.
1 It is Cup Final day in Britain. In England Southampton
gain a shock victory over clear favourites Manchester
United. Bobby Stokes scores the only goal of the match in
the 83rd minute. Manager Lawrie McMenemy says: 'We've won
the: Cup because we deserved to. Everybody called us
homely and hospitable. What [ they forgot to say is that
we are also professional, ruthless, determined and have a
I lot of ability'. United manager Tommy Docherty says:
'We lost because they scored so late in the match. I'd
much have preferred to get an early goal and we would
then have got right into it'. It is the first time that
Southampton have won the FA cup. In Scotland Rangers
complete a League, League Cup, FA Cup hat-trick by
beating Hearts 3-1. The first goal is scored after 41
seconds play by Derek Johnstone.
3 29,508 people attend Mick Channon's testimonial at
Southampton - a record crowd at The Dell still
celebrating the Cup victory . . . Colin Bell undergoes a
cartilage operation.
4 On a night of high drama, Liverpool clinch the League
Championship, establishing a new record of nine title
wins . .. Kindon puts Wolves ahead in the vital match at
Wolverhampton, but Keegan equalizes in the 76th minutes,
Toshack and Kennedy make it 3-1 ... Wolves are relegated
and Birmingham escape relegation ... Cardiff win at Bury
and ensure their promotion to Division Two.
5 Anderlecht beat West Ham 4-2 in the European Cup
Winners Cup Final in the Heysel Stadium, Brussels. Pal
Holland puts West Ham ahead but Rensenbrink equalizes
before half time. Van Der Elst and Robson add further
goals, but Rensenbrink. scores from a penalty and Van Der
Elst adds another goal. This is the first victory for a
Belgian club in European competition... Allan Brown is
the new manager of Blackpool, taking over from Harry
Potts the ex-Bumley boss.
6 Two managers lose their jobs - Walter Joyce leaves
Rochdale and Roy Chapman is sacked at Stockport. But
contrary to speculation Malcolm Allison stales that he'll
stay with Crystal Palace ... Real Madrid is banned for a
year by the UEFA. A spectator attacked the referee and a
Bayem player at the end of the first half at the Bemabeau
Stadium . . . Scotland open the Home Championship with a
convincing 3-1 win over under-strength Wales.
8 England field an untried team at Cardiff. After early
Welsh pressure, the game becomes more evenly balanced,
and a Peter Taylor goal gives England a 1-0 win. At
Hampden, Scotland beat N. Ireland 3-0, Don Masson of QPR
scores one of the goals in his second game for his
country.
9 Jimmy Rimmer, the Arsenal goalkeeper, is in the England
squad. He takes the place of Phil Parkes, who has asked
to be omitted for personal reasons ... David Smith is the
new manager of relegated Southend. Former manager Arthur
Rowley will work as a scout.
10 Jimmy Adamson joins Sparta Rotterdam as manager . . .
Real Madrid appeal against the European ban.
11 England beat N. Ireland 4-0 at Wembley ... Pop singer
Elton John is elected as chairman of Watford. John says:
I'm really serious about this. I hope people will not
treat this as a gimmick. I've supported this club since I
was seven years old'.
12 Bayem Munich win the European Cup for the third year
running, equalling Ajax's record. Roth scores the only
goal of the match in the second-half following a
free-kick ... The Football League propose to introduce a
'goal-bonus' system next season, but it must be ratified
by the clubs at their annual meeting... Doug Collins,
freed by Burnley, signs for Plymouth.
13 Bill McCarry is sacked at Wolves after seven and a
half years as manager ... Rod Thomas is dropped by Wales
for the first time in eight years . . . Bertie Mee is
leaving Highbury for good. Contrary to expectations, he
is not offered an administrative post by Arsenal.
14 Leighton James scores for Wales to beat N. Ireland 1-0
at Swansea... Bob Paisley is the 'Manager of the Year'.
Paisley says: 'My old headmaster Bill Shankjy must take
much of the credit. After working with him for 14 years I
could not fail to learn a tremendous amount'... Peter
Shilton pulls out of the England party, and asks not lo
be considered for selection in the future . .. Terry
Yorath, captain of Wales, is put on the transfer list by
Leeds ... Pat Jennings now has 61 caps for N. Ireland -an
all-lime record!
15 Scotland win the Home Championship outright for the
first time since 1967 by beating England 2-1 at Hampden
Park. Channon opens the scoring, but Don Masson equalizes
with a header. In the second-half a Kenny Dalglish shot
beats Clemence - a rare bad mistake by the goalkeeper.
Don Revie says: 'It was a good match and I think Scotland
just deserved to win. Our second-half performance pleased
me. We can build on it'.
17 The FA Council proposes that the two-years
qualification for foreign players should be scrapped. But
the Football League could still veto the signing of
players from abroad.
19 Liverpool repeat their 1973 double by winning the UEFA
Cup after clinching the championship. They go a goal
behind at Bruges when Lambert scores from a penally, but
Keegan equalizes following a free kick. The 1-1 draw
gives Liverpool a 4-3 winning aggregate .,. Cardiff win
the Welsh Cup and will play in European football next
season . . . Malcolm Allison leaves Crystal Palace. He
says: 'I had desperately wanted the club to win something
this season and we failed however narrowly. I have also
become increasingly disillusioned at the way English
football is heading. This is not an excuse. It is just
that I am sad and frustrated by some of the trends in the
game'.
21 Carlisle sign Bili Rafferty from Plymouth for
£30,000... George Best and Rodney Marsh fail to turn up
in time for Team America' and are dropped from the squad
against Italy.
22 in an incident packed match at Ninian Park Cardiff,
Wales draw 1-1 with Yugoslavia. The visitors take the
lead from a penalty and then lan Evans equalizes. In the
second half referee R. Gloeckner of E. Germany disallows
a Welsh goal and when objects are thrown on the pitch,
suspends the game for five minutes. Invading fans are
taken away by the police. When play resumes, yet another
Welsh goal is disallowed and a Terry Yorath penally is
saved by goalkeeper Marie. Four players are booked. Now
Yugoslavia are in the semi-finals of the European
Championship, where they are joined by W. Germany 2-0
(3-1 aggregate) winners over Spain, Czechoslovakia who
drew 2-2 in Russia (4-2 aggregate), and Holland who did
the double against Belgium by winning the second leg 2-1.
23 England lose to a last minute goal against Brazil in
Los Angeles. In the opening game of the American
Bicentennial Tournament, Roberto gets the winner
following a corner, but the England leam's performance is
praised. Don Revie says: 'I've bad some disappointments
in football but this is the most disappointing result in
14 years. It was a great performance and I was proud of
every one of my players. The pleasing thing to me is that
I've really got something to build on.'
24 Maicolm Macdonald reportedly wants to leave
Newcastle.,. Carlisle pay £50,000 for St Johnstone's
Scottish U-23 defender lan McDonald.
25 lan Hamilton, the Aston Villa striker is to play in
USA. He is joining Minnesota Kicks for a £30,000
transfer fee . . Jimmy Adamson is back in England. The
ex-Burnley coach leaves Sparta Rotterdam because he says
he cannot settle in Holland.
26 Two Don Givetis goals give a surprise 2-0 win to the
Republic of Ireland in Poland. The QPR forward is now the
all-time top-scorer for the Irish National team.
27 Arsenal draw-up a short list for their managerial
vacancy . . . Vemon Stokes, chairman of League's
Disciplinary Committee says that the 'no appeals' system
has worked well... On a tour match, Manchester United
draw 2-2 with 'Chicago Sting' in the USA ... Elton John,
new chairman of Watford brings Tom Walley back to the
club from Orient . . . Elton's uncle, ex-Fulham player
Roy Dwight takes over Dartford as manager ... Rimmer,
Wilkins and Gordon Hill are the new caps in a
much-changed England team against Italy. Hill's
international debut means that an extra £10,000 transfer
fee is due to Millwall from Manchester United.
28 In New York's Yankee Stadium, where the pitch is
designed for baseball, England beat Italy 3-2. Graziani
scores twice in the first-half, but a quick goal by
Channon immediately after the interval and a Thompson
header make the score 2-2. Following an excellent pass by
Brooking, Channon scores the winner. Unsavoury incidents
spoil the last half-an-hour of the match and three
Italian players are booked for fouls. Towers is cautioned
for dissent. Rimmer is replaced by Conigan at half-time,
and Mick Mills comes in for Phil Neal . . . Don Revie
says: 'I chose this team because I wanted to give players
a game and because we play Italy twice in the World Cup
during the next IS months. It could have gone wrong but
it didn't, and for that I have to thank the character of
my players.'.. Gil scores twice for Brazil against Team
America in the other game of this Bicentennial
Tournament.
30 Wales lose 1-0 against Hungary in the UEFA Youth
Tournament.
31 England complete the USA tour with a comfortable 3-1
over Team America. Kevin Keegan scores twice in the first
half, and a fine individual effort by skipper Gerry
Francis makes the score 3-0. Stewart Scullion gets the
consolation goal for the home side, which includes Pele,
Bobby Moore, the Italian international Chinaglia and Mike
England . . . Brazil take the Cup by beating Italy 4-1.
Uruguayan referee Baretto sends off Causio and Bettega
from Italy and Lula of Brazil.
