and Manchester U. are this year's Cup Finalists . ..
Barcelona's manager resigns after their UEFA Cup defeat
by Liverpool... Bobby Moore goes to the USA ... Miljan
Miljanic might come to Arsenal... Sunderland are
promoted.
3 Crystal Palace fail to make football history by
reaching the FA Cup Final as a Third Division club. In a
lacklustre game, they lose to Southampton 2-0.
Southampton's second half goals are scored by Gilchrist
and Peach (pen), and their appearance in the Final will
be their first since 1902. Their opponents, Manchester
United, will be making their fifth post-war Wembley FA
Cup Final appearance. They beat Derby 2-0. Gordon Hill
scores both goals ... In the League, both Liverpool and
QPR win through late goals. Sub. David Fairclough helps
out Liverpool once again, and Stan Bowles gets the QPR
winner at Newcastle 20 seconds from Ihe end . . .
Barcelona manager Hennas Weisweiler resigns following the
midweek defeat against Liverpool in the UEFA-Cup.
5 Ted MacDougall opts out of Scotland's Home
International fixtures. He says that he needs a rest, and
would rather go on a tour with Norwich ... Bobby Moore
goes to the USA to play for San Antonio.
6 Liverpool are level on points with QPR on lop of the
table. Kevin Keegan scores the winning goal for Ihem
against Leicester.. .ThreeSouthampton players, Osgood,
McCalliog and Steel are disciplined by the club for
'celebrating' the semi-final victory too long and not
obeying the curfew. Without them Southampton beat
Portsmouth 1-0 in a league match. David Peach is booked
and may be banned from playing at Wembley.
7 Scotland beat Switzerland 1-0 in a friendly with an
early goa! by Willy Pettigrew ... In the Third Division
promotion battle Crystal Palace and Brighton both lose,
Cardiff win and Millwall gain a point against Bury in a
goalless draw.
8 QPR manager Dave Sexton fines winger Dave Thomas for
his involvement in the incident which cost Asa Hartford a
two-match ban. Sexton says: This question of clubs being
responsible for players' conduct is difficult. It is
better if the discipline comes from within the player
himself . . . Several First Division clubs pledge to
release players for Wales's European Championship match
on April 24 - the last Saturday of the league season!
9 A record crowd for soccer of 58,128 see Pele's team the
New York Cosmos play Seattle Sounders in the new Seattle
Stadium - an important step for the game in the USA.
29-year-old Jim Shoulder, an ex-Sunderland player, takes
over the Australian national team . .. Co in Barrett of
Manchester City signs for Nottm Forest.
10 A useful Saturday for QPR-they are the only winning
side in the top five.' Middlesbrough go ahead at Loftus
Road but a penalty awarded for a foul on Dave Clement
gives Gerry Francis the opportunity to level the score.
Givens,' Francis and Bowlcs score further goals lo give
QPR a 4-2 victory. Derby lose at& Manchester City 4-3
and City's Mick Doyle is sent off early in the match for
allegedly punching Leighton James, Ipswich beat
Manchester United comfortably, and Liverpool drop a point
at Aston Villa ... In Division Two, only Sunderland win
of the promotion contenders, and in Division Three
Crystal Palace lose at home lo Cardiff ... A goal by
Geoff Aslett wins the FA Vase at Wembley for Billericay
the Essex Senior League Champions . . . Slan Bowles is
offered a six-years contract by QPR worth £100,000.
12 According to a Daily Express exclusive, Miljan
Mnjanic, the current Yugoslav, manager of Real Madrid is
negotiating with Arsenal with a view to becoming!; their
manager.
13 There are more set-backs for teams hoping for
promotion. Bolton in the Second Division lose at home to
York, and Third Division Crystal Palace drop a point a
against Halifax at Selhurst Park.
14 Two English clubs reach European Finals! West Ham
break the deadlock against Eintracht Frankfurt at Upton
Park with a Trevor Brooking goal in the 49th minute, and
run out 4-3 aggregate winners. 'Our best display in the
club's history. Everything I hoped for when I took the
job came true tonight' says manager John Lyall ...
Liverpool draw with Barcelona 1-1, but the solitary
Toshack goal from the first leg takes them into their
second UEFA-Cup Final.. . Gerd Muller scores twice for
Bayern's 2-0 win over Real in the European Cup, and St.
Etienne drew 0-0 at Eindhoven to become the first French
club to reach the European Cup Final since Rheims in 1959
... In England, Second Division WBA and Third Division
Cardiff strengthen their promotion bids with conclusive
victories over Fulham and Hereford respectively. 35,549
people see Cardiff's match at Ninian Park-their best
league attendance for 15 years... Don Revie names a squad
of 30 players for the next, seven internationals which
are scheduled before the end of the season. Eight
uncapped players are included, and five more who gained
their first caps in the recent game against Wales. Revie
says: 'I wanted to include both skills and workrate. It
is a matter of grafting one to the other. Skill is no
good alone, 1 have picked the players for these
qualities. I know they will play their guts out for
England' . . . Dave Smith, manager, leaves Mansfield-at
the end ot the club's best run of results for years.
16 Terry Shanahan joins Millwall on a free transfer from
Chesterfield, and Hereford pay £8,000 to Luton for Peter
Spiring .. . Millwall gain an important 3-1 win over
Brighton ... In other Good Friday fixtures, Southampton
lose at Plymouth-a severe blow to their promotion hopes,
and two Bristol clubs draw in front of a 26,000 crowd ...
Lincoln score two more goals and become the first club to
score more than 100 league goals in a season for nine
years.
17 The second day oi Ihe Easier programme solves quite a
few problems. Hereford are definitely promoted to
Division Two - in their fourth season as a Football
League club!... Derby are out of the First Division
championship race after Iheir home draw against
Leicester, QPR lose at Norwich, and as Liverpool beat
Stoke 5-3, they go to the top of Division One . . .
Birmingham beat Tottenham, and both Wolves and Burnley
seem certain to be relegated . . . Southampton are out of
the Second Division promotion race . . . Ron Moore of
Tranmere scores a hat-trick and joins Buckley of Walsall
as top league scorer on 32 ... Youngsters who earn
headlines include Tony McAndrew (Middlesbrough) with a
hat-trick against Sheffield United, Keith Bertshin
(Ipswich), with a goal al Highbury with his first touch
of the ball as sub., and David McNiven by scoring a goal
for Leeds against Manchester City ... Bayern Munich want
their European Cup Final to be moved from Glasgow,
because of the Scotland v England fixture which might
affect the attendance.
19 Sunderland are promoted to Division One! They beat
Bolton 2-1 in front of a 52,000 crowd ... Burnley are
relegated to Division Two after losing to Manchester
United . . . Liverpool are favourites to win the
league-they beat Manchester City 3-0, with the help of
two goals by David Fairclough, who. has now scored seven
league goals! . . . QPR defeat Arsenal 2-1 wilh a Gerry
Francis penalty in the 87th minute.
20 Millwall win again, and finish their league programme
on 56 points. Now promotion from Division Three depends
on the remaining results of Cardiff and Crystal Palace
... A Glasgow garage owner, Jack Gillespie pays nearly
£300,000 for shares in Glasgow Rangers ... Portsmouth
sack coach Pat Wright as an economy measure.
21 Manchester United are out of the championship race
after a home defeat by Stoke . . . Bristol City are back
in the First Division after 65 years' absence . ..
Francis Lee of Derby announces his retirement at the end
of the season . . . Terry Yorath, who was sent off
against Leicester on Tuesday, will still captain Wales
against Yugoslavia in Zagreb ... Reading are certain to
be promoted from Division Four after their draw at
Cambridge.
24 QPR beat Leeds 2-0, with goals by Thomas and Bowles,
on the last Saturday of the league season. But the
championship decider will be played on May 4 at
Wolverhampton, where Wolves must win to have a hope of
avoiding relegation, and Liverpool need a low scoring
draw or a win to finish on top of the First Division . .
. Lincoln are sure to set an all-lime points record in
Division Four. They have 73 points with one game to play
. . - Francis Lee finishes his playing career with two
late goals in Derby's 6-2 win at Ipswich ... Trevor
Anderson scores a hat-trick of penalties for Swindon v
Walsall, a feat last achieved by Ken Barnes for
Manchester City in 1957 v Everlon . . . Rangers clinch
the Scottish Premier Division litle . . . Kevin Keegan is
elected 'Footballer of the Year' ... In the European
Championship, Wales lose 2-0 in Yugoslavia . . .
Czechoslovakia beat Russia by the same score . . Spain
and W. Germany draw 1-1 in Madrid . . . Sunderland arc
Second Division champions, WBA are promoted with them and
Bristol City and Oxford U. are relegated to Division
Three.
25 Stan Bowles is involved in yet another controversy
with manager Dave Sexton. As QPR leave for a short tour
of Israel, Bowles refuses to board the plane and stays at
home. It is reported that the German club SV Hamburg is
making a bid for Bowles.
27 Arsenal place Brian Kidd, Eddie Kelly and young Brian
Hornsby on the transfer list... Cyril Knowles of
Tottenham, 31, retires because of knee trouble.
28 Two early Bruges goals surprise Liverpool at Anfield,
but during a five minute second-half spell, Kennedy, Case
and Keegan (pen), put the home side ahead in Ihe first
leg of the UEFA-Cup Final. A highly entertaining match
ends in a 3-2 win for Liverpool . .. Millwall are back in
Division Two after just one season in the Third . . .
Crystal Palace fail to beat Chesterfield at home and now
cannot overhaul their South London neighbours . .. Dixie
McNeil gets another hat-trick for Hereford, and is the
joint highest league scorer with 34, for the second year
in succession.
29 Palace give Alan Whittle a free transfer, and put
Peter Taylor on the transfer list. Several clubs are
interested in the England international at £250,000 . .
. Kevin Keegan, when presented with the 'Footballer of
the Year' award at the annual dinner says: 'I know 1 am
not the most popular footballer in the country. I have
done things wrong in my time. But 1 have learnt from my
mistakes'.
30 Sheffield W. escape relegation to Division Four by
beating Southend. Aldershot go down.
