Controversy over Ladbroke's offer to sponsor the Home International Championship ... Peter Storey says he'll never play for Arsenal again ... England flop in the European U-23 Championship ... Bertie Mee announces his retirement. . . Crystal Palace start sliding.

3 Penalties play vital parts in the British clubs' games in European football. Mansveld scores two penalties in Den Haag's 4-2 defeal of West Ham in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Ray Clemence saves a penalty at Dresden in Liverpool's 0-0 draw io the UEFA Cup. Bobby Lennox misses a penalty at Glasgow in Celtic's 1-1 draw with the East Gennan team Zwickau. Wrexham lose at Anderlecht 1-0. The top tie of theevening ends in a 2-2 draw between Moenchengladbach and Real Madrid... Newcastle sign Roger Jones arid Graham Gates from Blackburn in a £100,000 package deal.

4 Both Terry Venables and Jim Cannon, respectively Crystal Palace's coach and player, are found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute by the FA . . . Brentford sign Andy McCulloch from Oxford for £25,000.

5 Don Rogers re-joins Swindon from QPR in a £30,000 transfer deal . . . The FA turns down Ladbroke's offer to sponsor the Home International Championship. But Trevor Morris, Welsh FA Secretary, says: 'They cannot decide without consulting the other three Associations. We would benefit by £18,000 per year from the sponsorship, and as far as we are concerned, ihe deal is on'.

6 Crystal Palace reach the semi-finals - the fourth Third Division side since the war to do so, and the first since 1959. Alan Whittle scores the only goal of the match at Sunderland . . . Bradford City lose 1-0 against Southampton . . . Derby beat injury-hit Newcastle 4-2, Manchester United are held to draw by Wolves ... In the League, a surprise Liverpool home defeat enables QPR to go two points clear at the top of the First Division.

7 Malcolm Allison is reported to be in line for the USA team manager job during the coming summer. He would coach and select the learn for the four-cornered tournament which also involves England. He says: 'I would only go if I could take Terry Venables with me. In a month coaching the best players in America, I could teach them more than they have learned in the history of the game there'... Don Revie adds four players to the U-23 squad for the match against Hungary in Budapest - Dodd, Mills, Wilkins and new boy Paul Jones of Bolton. But only Dodd, who takes the place of the injured Beattie, is included in the team which will start the game.

8 Peter Storey is suspended for 14 days by Arsenal. The ex-England player has allegedly not reported for training for 10 days . . . The FA Cup semi-final draw ensures that a team outside the First Division will appear in the Final for the third lime in four years.

9 QPR buy Peter Eastoe, the 22-year-old Swindon striker for £80,000 ... Crystal Palace drop yet another home point - they haven't won a League match at Selhurst Park since November... In a pulsating Cup re-play, Manchester United beat Wolves 3-2 with an extra-time Sammy Mcllroy goal. Tommy Docherty: 'This is the first time that the Cup Final will be played at Hillsbrough -- for what else can you call our semi-final match against Derby? The other semi-final is a bit of a joke really'.

10 England U-23 flop in Hungary in the first leg of their European Championship tie. The 3-0 defeat is described in the Press as "hopeless", Jeff Powell writes in the Daily Mail: 'The real message from this match is that the 1978 World Cup Finals could be moved from Argentina to the Moon for all it will matter to most of these England players'... On the last day before Ihe transfer deadline, Sunderland sign Ray Train for £80,000 from Carlisle. Brighton pay £30,000 for Brian Horton of Port Vale and Dennis Nelson goes to Reading from Crewe for £10,000. Newport collect a club record £15,000 from Swindon for Steve Aizlewood.

11 Coach Ian McFarlane leaves Manchester City, the League Cup winners, and signs as chief coach for Sunderland . . . Bobby Moore is dropped by Fulham - he is said to be contemplating a contract with a club in the USA.

13 All four championship aspirants win in Division 1 ... Manchester United build up a 3-0 lead against Leeds at Old Trafford in front of yet another near 60,000 crowd, but two late goals by the visitors make Ihe score more respectable . . . Dennis Tueart misses two penalties against Burnley, and is involved in an incident with Jim Thompson, who is sent off. The match ends in a goalless draw . . . Crystal Palace are the only team with promotion hopes to win in Division 3. ...

16 Peter Storey says that he'll never play for Arsenal again. The ex-international defender is 'fed-up' with reserve team football and feels unwanted at Highbury... Crystal Palace win their first home League match since late November.

17 Both English teams - West Ham and Liverpool - progress into the semi-finals of the UEFA competitions. West Ham score three times in the first half, but a second half Den Haag goal opens up the game again. Finally West Ham win with the help of the 'away goals' ruling - 5-5 ... Jimmy Case and Kevin Keegan score in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Dynamo Dresden. Wrexham and Celtic lose against Anderlecht and Zwickau respectively ... a surprise result in the European Cup is St Ettenne 3 Dynamo Kiev 0. The other Eastern European side Hajduk Split also eliminated by PSV Eindhoven by the same score .. . Real Madrid are in the semi-final with an 'away goal' win over Moenchengladbach ... Bulgaria provide the strangest score of the night—Levski 5 Barcelona 4. Barcelona win on an 8-5 aggregate and join Bruges, Hamburg and Liverpool in the UEFA-Cup draw ... In front of a miserly 8,874 people, a patched-up Football League side beat the Scottish League 1-0... Manchester United drop a point at Norwich, but in the Second Division Bristol City strengthen their position at the top with a surprising 1-0 win at West Bromwich.

18 Don Revie names his England squads, for the matches against Wales and Hungary U-23 but his plans are soon altered, because the Derby v Stoke match is rearranged for the same week. Five players drop out of the senior squad, and four others, including Bolton and Bristol City footballers drop out of the U-23 squad. Revie says: 'I don't blame Derby manager Dave Mackay. I know how difficult it is for him. But this is yet another chance lost of getting our best lean together. No one should be surprised if England don't succeed in internationals' . . . Dave Waison will miss the rest of the season with a back injury.

19 Ray Kennedy, Dave Clement and Phil Parkes of QPR are called into the full England squad ... Kevin Lock and John Middleton are the new members of the U-23 Squad.

20 Aston Villa's Chris Nicholl scores all four goals in the Leicester v Aston Villa (2-2) match. Brian Kidd gets a hai-trick in Arsenal's 6-1 win over West Ham United ... Alan Buckley also gels a hat-trick, taking his season's total to 29 in the League.

22 Gary Jones of Everton is put on the transfer list... Peter Taylor of Crystal Palace is selected for the England squad to play Wales, and four Manchester United players are selected for U-23 match against Hungary at Old Trafford . . . Bertie Mee, manager of Arsenal, announces that he will retire at the end of the season.

23 England are out of the U-23 European Championship. Although a late rally gives them a 3-1 win over Hungary, they go out on a 4-3 aggregate in front of a 33,410 crowd ai Old Trafford - a record for a U-23 fixture in England . . . Bolton lose again at home to Blackburn and are slipping in the Second Division race.

24 A depleted England side beat Wales 2-1 in the Centenary match at Wrexham. Including the substitutes, eight players are capped for the first time. Ray Kennedy and Peter Taylor score their first goals for England. He is the first Third Division player to be selected for England since Johnny Byrne - also of Crystal Palace -15 years ago . . . Alan Mullery, the 34-year-old Fulham captain says he will retire at the end of the season. He also says that he would like to go into football management... Charlie George suffers a dislocated shoulder injury as Derby drop a home point against Stoke. In the same match Stoke's Alan Hudson cracks a bone in his foot and is out for the rest of the season... Scotland beat Holland 2-0 to make the aggregate 2-2 in the U-23 international but lose the penalty contest 4-3 and are out of the European Championship ...

25 Dave Clement of QPR is suspended for two matches by the FA ... In an emotional Press Conference, Bertie Mee reveals his reason for leaving club management. The pressures on an Arsenal manager are sometimes intolerable' he says, 'and I was not quite as motivated in the last two years as I should have been'. He added thai his dearest wish is to stay with Arsenal in some capacity.

27 The top clubs in Division One all win. Asa Hartford of Manchester City is sent off at QPR and David Webb gets the only goal of the match . . . Liverpool sub. Fairclough scores twice in their 2-0 win over Burnley . . . Manchester U. beat Middlesbrough after a goalless first half and Derby defeat Birmingham . .. Sheffield United are definitely relegated following their 5-0 thrashing at Spurs... Allan Clarke scores his 200th league goal - against Arsenal in Leeds' 3-0 home win . . . Mark Wellington,-Leicester's U-23 international goalkeeper fractures his ankle.

30 A brilliant John Toshack goal gives Liverpool a surprising 1-0 win at Barcelona ID the UEFA Cup. Toshack says: 'When my career is over and 1 look back on all the goals I scored, this one will probably stand out' . . . More than 38,000 people see Peter Taylor of Crystal Palace miss a penalty in the vital Third Division promotion match against Millwall which ended in a 0-0 draw. Palace wanted to play a day earlier because of their forthcoming Cup semi-final, but Millwall's manager Gordon Jago refused their request... Alan King moves to Everton from Luton for £35,000.

31 Graham Paddon gives West Ham the lead against Frankfurt, in the Cup Winners Cup, but the Londoners lose the match 2-1 - a result greeted with satisfaction by manager John Lyall . . . Elsewhere in Europe, Real Madrid draw with Bayern Munich 1-1 and St Etienne beat PSV 1-0 in the European Cup. After the match at Madrid, a spectator attacks the referee, and knocks down Bayern's Gerd Muller, who goes to rescue the official... Glasgow Rangers are in the Scottish Cup Final. Two goals down at half-time to Motherwell, they fight back and goals by Miller and Johns (2) put them through.
