Hutchinson retires from football...Palace storm on In the
FA Cup-but slip In the League... Derek Dougan's Kettering
Town get into trouble over advertising ... More shocks In
the FA Cup... Pat Jennings is PFA Footballer of the Year.
2 Bowles is back in the QPR team. He plays a leading part
in the Londoners' 4-0 win over Red Star Belgrade in Mick
Leach's testimonial... Sunderland reach the Fifth Round
of the Cup by beating Hull 1-0.
3 Tony Morley signs for Burnley from Preston for
£100,000 - a club record ... Bob Latchford will have a
cartilage operation . . . Two players - Taylor and Derek
Jeffries - are sent off as Crystal Palace are beaten 4-1
at Rotherham.
4 The 'no-kissing-and-cuddling' recommendation is
rejected by the FA as 'not practicable'.
6 Liverpool are back on top of the table following their
2-0 win over Leeds - once again Toshack and Keegan get
the goals . . . Change in Division 2 also - Bolton take
over from Sunderland, who lose 2-0 at Fulham... Hereford
and Lincoln are leading the lower divisions . . . Jenny
Baseley creates football history. A mother of two, she is
the first woman to referee a footbal! match between men.
She officiates in Thornton Heath, Surrey.
9 The shattered glass of the team coach's window injures
Southend goalkeeper Malcolm Webster. Reserve 'keeper Scan
Rafter plays in the 1-1 draw at Port Vale.
10 lan Hutchinson, the Chelsea striker retires from
football. One of the unluckiest men in the game,
Hutchinson has sustained two broken legs during his
career, two cartilage operations, a broken arm, and a
broken toe. He retires on medical advice. Chelsea manager
Eddie McCreadie says: 'I watched him struggle for four
years of terrible injuries where no-one else would have
survived. The club will look after "Hutch"
financially' . . . Don Revie selects an extremely
powerful looking U-23 squad against Hungary. Gerry
Francis, Kevin Beattie and over-age players, Alan Hudson
and Jimmy Greenhoff are included.
11 The Norwich v Bradford City tie is postponed because a
'flu epidemic hits the Fourth Division club . . . Peter
Taylor of Crystal Palace and Peter Osgood of Southampton
are suspended for two matches each for reaching 20
disciplinary points.
12 The FA pay £500 compensation to a London Transport
worker, who was attacked by Scottish fans travelling to
Wembley in 1973 ... Ron Greenwood, chairman of the
Managers and Secretaries Association, warns that 'freedom
of contract1 would lead to increased admission charges.
The managers believe that a simpler form of the current
proposals would help the players to keep their jobs and
would also help the financial structure of the clubs.
Derek Dougan, PFA chairman reacts: 'I am a little
disappointed. They are against members of another Trade
Union trying to better conditions. All we are trying to
do is to give players the same rights as managers.'
13 John Manning, 34-year-old Crewe trainer-coach, who
hasn't played a league match for IB months, returns
against Southport and scores a hat-trick! ... Alan
Buckley goes one belter - he gets four in Walsall's 5-1
win over Rotherham . . Johan Cruyff has a disagreement
with Barcelona manager Hennes Weisweiier, and seems
likely to leave the Spanish club next summer.
14 Crystal Palace defeat Chelsea in the fifth round of
the FA Cup. Palace are 2-0 up at half time, but Wilkins
and Wicks equalise for Chelsea. A Peter Taylor free-kick
puts Palace into the last 8 for the second time in their
history . . . Sub. John Richards scores a hat-trick for
Wolves v Charlton and a solitary Brace Rioch goal is
enough for Derby to defeat Southend... There are scenes
of violence off the pitch at Chelsea - several arrests,
hospital cases, and a mounted police patrol is needed to
quell the riot... QPR lake advantage of the inactivity of
their rivals, and by winning 3-0 at Tottenham reduce the
gap at the top to one point... Jimmy Greaves, now with
Brentwood, is sent off for making a remark to a linesman.
16 Crystal Palace player Nick Chatterton will be
'sponsored' by a local firm. They will pay his wages, and
use him for promoting the company's products. All the
other Crystal Palace players are up for sale' for similar
schemes ... Terry Neill says that Tottenham are
negotiating to sign Johan Cruyff. He is trying to raise
the necessary finance from commercial enterprises.
18 Derby close the gap on the leaders with a 2-0 win over
Arsenal. Recent signing Leighton James scores twice...
Manchester U. draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford in
front of 59,709 people . .. Another crowd of over 50,000
see the Newcastle v. Bolton FA Cup replay end in a 0-0
draw .. .In the first of European Championship U-23
quarter-finals, Holland beat Scotland 2-0.
19 The Police Superintendents' Association suggest that
football matches should be given certificates like films.
An X-certificate match - where crowd trouble is likely
-would be banned for fans under 16 unless they are
accompanied by an adult. The idea doesn't please the
clubs. Brian Mearsof Chelseasaid: 'Who would decide which
matches should be selected?'... A sizeable crowd
demonstrates in Barcelona on behalf of Johan Cruyff. They
want the player to slay, and the manager, Hennes
Weisweiler, to leave.
21 Referee P. Richardson of Lincolnshire sends off three
Oxford United players -Shuker, Tail and Houseman at
Blackpool. . . Liverpool take a two point lead as
Manchester United lose at Villa in front of the day's
biggest crowd - 50,094 . .. Graham Tutt of Charlton is
carried off at Sunderland after five minutes' play, and
the home team score four times against sub. goalkeeper,
striker Derek Hales ... Glen Hoddle, a 17-year-old,
scores Tottenham's winning goal at Stoke in bis first
full appearance for the league side.
23 The twice-postponed Norwich v Bradford City FA Cup tie
provides a shock result. The Fourth Division club wins
2-1 through an 87th minute goal by 21-year-old Billy
McGinley. This is only the third time that a team from
Division 4 has reached the last 8 of ihe FA Cup ... The
twice replayed Newcastle v Bolton tie is won by
Newcastle, 2-1. . . . Kcttering Town-are told to remove
advertising slogans from their jerseys. Manager Derek
Dougan is said to be considering a tesl case in court
against the FA to decide how far football sponsorship is
allowed to go... Colin Bell loses his battle against
injury and will not play for Manchester City in the
League Cup Final.
24 Bristol City go on top of Division Two, following
their 1-0 win over Oldham and Hereford lengthen their
lead in Division Three... Brighton beat Palace 2-0 at
home in front of 33,000 people. Palace have collected six
points only in their last 12 league games and have
slipped into fifth place.
25 The championship race becomes even more tense as QPR
win at Leicester and Manchester United draw with Derby at
Old Trafford, Now only one point separates the top four!
... It is announced thai GeorT Hurst will manage Southern
League Telford next season... Newcastle are hit by a 'flu
epidemic a few days before the League Cup Final. A
request for postponement is considered, but manager
Gordon Lee says that the game must be played on Saturday.
27 'Freedom of Contract' for the player is a step nearer
as the 92 club chairmen agree on principle to accept the
proposals ... Derek Dougan says that the Kettering team
will continue to carry advertising on their jerseys in
defiance of the warning letter from the FA, but at the
end compromises with just the letter T instead of Tyres'.
28 Manchester City win 2-1 in an excellent League Cup
Final with goals by wingers Barnes and Tueart. Gowling
scores the Newcastle goal... Manchester United slam West
Ham 4-0 . . . Derby, Liverpool and QPR draw . . . Leeds
are back in the reckoning after a 1-0 win at Coventry ...
W. Germany beat Malta 8-0 in the last of the European
Championship qualifying matches and now they will meet
Spain in the quarter-finals.
29 Pat Jennings is the PFA 'Footballer of the Year'. He
is selected from a short list of six whichalso included
Kevin Keegan, Lou Macari, Archie Gernmill, Don Masson,
and Duncan McKenzie. Peter Barnes, the Manchester City
winger and son of ex-player Ken Barnes is the 'Young
Player of the Year'. George Eastham is presented with the
meritorious award for past services to football.
