| Bob 70-71 | - See magazines condensed to their 70-71 content !!
October 2002'Eleven' Bob Rating: B Let me tell you I did not rush to buy this magazine. The first issue had Rio Ferdinand on the cover - bad move in Leeds. In the end, for the sake of this website, I coughed up the 3 pounds 20 pence. I wish I hadn't. On the cover it sells itself as 'The serious football magazine for the serious fan'. Substitute 'serious' for 'dour'. 'The format is dull, dull, dull.' The magazine falls into the trap of trying to please everyone by having a page devoted to each team. The problem for a monthly is that the information is so out of date by the time it hits the stands - though the lack of early season dismissals probably rescued the first edition. Another problem is that - well I don't know about you - but me, when things are split up into teams, the only team I want to read about is my team, Leeds United. So there's 19 articles I'm not interested in straight off. The format is dull, dull, dull. It has the feel of one of those grown up golfing or motoring magazines that I'm forced to pick up at the dentists, that make it a pleasure to put down again to be orally attacked. It's sooooo serious. No frills, zero imagination. Presentation nulle point. OK lets find something I like about it ... The adverts aren't over-imposing. In fact it has the rare effect of rather perking the magazine up, because so much more thought has gone into grabbing one's attention ! 'FourFourTwo' is on such a tremendous high I honestly cannot see where there is a market for this magazine. 'FourFourTwo' is on such a tremendous high, it is almost uncompetable in the football magazine stakes at present. The weekly, 'Match' is even better - but probably over-looked by adults, to their detriment. 'When Saturday Comes' has the alternative market sown up. And 'Shoot!' - which is the most similar magazine available has history on it's side (I cannot think why else anyone gets it because that's pretty dreadful, too). But more devastating for 'Eleven' than this, is the output from the daily and Sunday newspaper suplements. Virtually all the regular national newspapers do football magazines that are more imaginative, interesting, and up-to-date than 'Eleven' - and they're all free ! 'Eleven' is the type of magazine you get for free as you get on the Ferry The one 'B' grade the magazine picks up from this site is for an article on Kevin Keegan at Manchester City, as well as the odd other Bob 70-71 star, that appears as manager to a current Premiership side. In fact, that's what 'Eleven' lacks a decent set of history articles, it would pull it out of the mire without a doubt. It seems to be aiming to sell to 'serious' football fans. 'Serious' football fans may want to read about the current Premiership sides ... but it sure as hell would DEFINATELY read one about Liverpool in the Eighties, Tom Finney, or Don Revie's Leeds United... 'Eleven' is the type of magazine you get for free as you get on the Ferry, and keeps your interest just about as long. It will need to evolve quickly to survive out there. Seriously.
