Win a Football Cup Medal !

Spurs' Double winning side 1960-61

Lot 342: Signed Photo of Spurs 60-61 Double Winning Team

Tomorrow there is a big auction of 574 football items at Christie's. Why not try to bag yourself an old footie shirt or someone else's well earned medal and pretend that your Dad/ Uncle/ you won it ! This follows on from today's auction of items from Sir Geoffrey Hurst (See News).

Amongst the items are a large lots from Bob 70-71 stars Phil Neal (Northampton Town) and Les Allen (QPR manager) - who is selling the above photo with accompanying items at an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 pounds ! See Football Memorabilia

Ranieri for Vialli at Chelsi

Hardly had Chelsea's discontent with Vialli been mooted than he was booted out ! I can see why, he'd only won 5 trophies in his short spell, and it makes pure sense to appoint a new manager whose most recent effort was to relegate Athletico Madrid - if Ken Bates is a Leeds United fan, anyway. Claudio can't speak English which must be an advantage at Chelsea, at present. Better still he's now been added to Bob's 70-71 pages under AS Roma - though this needs confirmation. What information I have comes from the following career breakdown from The Times : Football Ranieri joins up with old friends at Chelsea

1951: Born in Rome.
1969-1986: Unspectacular playing career with Roma, Catanzaro and Catania.
1986: Takes up first coaching position with Vigor Lamezia.
1987: Moves to Campania.
1988: Takes over at Sardinian club Cagliari while they are in the Italian third division. He takes them to Serie A with two successive promotion campaigns.
1991: Joins Napoli in Serie A, where the club are struggling to cope with the loss of Diego Maradona. Among his players is Gianfranco Zola.
1993: After being dismissed by Napoli early in the season he moves to Serie B side Fiorentina.
1994: Wins Serie B title.
1996: Wins Copa Italia and Supercopa.
1997: Leaves Italy for the first time in his career to take charge of Valencia, in Spain.
1999: Wins Copa del Rey in Spain.
1999: Joins Atlético Madrid and signs Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink from Leeds for £12 million.
2000: The move turns sour and the club is taken into judicial administration after embezzlement allegations against Jesus Gil, the president. Ranieri quits in March and Atlético are eventually relegated from the Primera Liga.
September: Chelsea confirm Ranieri's appointment as replacement for ousted coach Gianluca Vialli.

Taylor in Transfer Taskforce.

The European Commission is threatening to do away with transfer fees for European footballers on the grounds that it restricts freedom of movement for players. Having buried it's head in the sand over this issue for two years, FIFA are finally feeling threatened enough to do something about it. In the fine tradition of all bureaucracies this so far involves setting up a committee ! The UK representative is Gordon Taylor (Bolton Wanderers) chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association and president of the Federation of International Football Professionals. See The Times FootballTaylor joins committee to lead transfer talks

Buckley Sacked

Alan Buckley (Nottingham Forest squad) became the first manager sacked this season on 22 August, after only a few games had been played. It was Alan's second spell as manager of Grimsby Town, where he'd been manager for three years. Alan is new to these pages, having been an unplayed player in the Forest squad until the 71-72 season. Alan went on to play 405 League games at Walsall -interrupted by a brief spell at Birmingham City - and became player-manager / manager of the club from 1979 untill 1986. See Nationwide's football site .

Grimsby subsequently have taken on Lennie Lawrence the former Luton Town manager, who at 52, could well belong to these pages himself, but as he didn't clock up a full League match, it's difficult to trace him.

Manager of the Month

Ray Graydon (Bristol Rovers) has won August 2000's Division Two Manager of the Month Award for Walsall's flying start this season. Walsall won all four of their opening League fixtures and were 5 points clear after the first completed month. To celebrate Ray now has his own Bob's 70-71 page - see Ray Graydon. For an interview with Ray see Nationwide's football site Nationwide League Division 2 News Article
