| Bob 70-71 | April 2003 NewsNews of other stars from the 1970-71 season will appear here ... 27 April 2003 Rich List 2003 Well done to Sir Alex Ferguson, who became the very first Bob 70-71 star to make The Sunday Times annual 'Rich List'. Placed at equal 976th in the list of the UKs 1,000 wealthiest people, Sir Alex is estimated to own 30 million pounds. It is the lowest qualifying total in the entire list, but makes him Number One on this site ! The List states that Sir Alex earned just 12,000 pounds when he was first a manager at Aberdeen 25 years ago, but since 1996 has been on a contract that earns at least a million a year, and his most recent three year contract with Manchester United is worth 11 million pounds. Sir Alex is also half owner of the horse 'Rock of Gibralter', which has now been retired to stud. This will earn the owners 3 million pounds a year for the next 16 years, and the horse an intimate afternoon with a steady stream of the top fillies in the World ! Sir Alex is reported as not being driven by earning money, but rather by the 'fear of failure'. He is no longer looking at retirement and may even carry on after his next contract expires in 2005. Sir Alex is nevertheless, 20 million pounds behind his player David Beckham, who is placed at equal 689- listed with his wife, Victoria. Indeed, Manchester United is listed as one of the few companies to have 4 Rich List millionaires, of which Sir Alex is behind Harry Dobson (444 million pounds), Martin Edwards (108 million pounds), and,of course, David and Victoria Beckham (50 million pounds). Sir Alex also appears as the 35th highest placed football millionaire - of which, only Becks (at 31) and he actually played top level football as far as I can see - and 79th equal in the list of Scotland richest 100. See also Owen and Verón Brooking's New Role Trevor Brooking has taken over the managerial role of West Ham United, due to the ill health of the in-post manager, Glenn Roeder. Glenn is presently in the Royal London Hospital after a having a blocked blood vessel in the brain. Trevor, who up until the appointment was a BBC football pundit, and also a Non-exectutive member of the West Ham board, is unlikely to remain in the role once Glenn recovers from his ill-health. At the time of Glenn's collapse, West Ham United had three matches to play in a Premiership relegation battle. In his first game (today) the West Ham team beat Man City away from home 1-0, keeping the hopes of Premiership survival alive. With 6 points to play for they can still catch Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United. Leeds United themselves appointed a television pundit as manager, in Terry Venables (QPR), which may partly explain their low position in the League. However, Trevor's temporary role has been generally well received. See BBC SPORT Football My Club West Ham Utd Hammers appoint Brooking Gradi's Crewe Promoted Dario Gradi (Sutton United), the English League's longest surviving manager, having been in post since June 1983, has helped his club back into the Division One at the first time of asking. On 26 April 2003, the 0-0 away draw at QPR plus several other favourable results meant Crewe have secured promotion in second place. When Dario took over the club they were the old Division Four mainstays. But in 1997 they were promoted to the current Division One where they stayed for 4 season till last season's relegation. During this time Dario made the Professional Footballers' Association 'Fair Play Award' his own winning it 6 out of 8 seasons. 22 April 2003 Rushden and Diamonds Promoted ! Rushden and Diamonds, managed by Bob 70-71 Star, Brian Talbot (Ipswich Town) have won promotion to Division Two in only their second seaon of League football. Last season the side finished in 6th place and lost out on promotion by losing the Play-Off final 3-1 to the other new boys to the League, Cheltenham Town at the Millennium Stadium. The club only formed in 1992 when Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds amalgemated, and already the club have been promoted 4 times ! Having narrowly missed out on Conference League promotion three successive season, it will be particularly pleasing for the club, not to repeat these events in Division Three. Brian took over from Roger Ashby in 1997, and is now talking about winning the Championship. All three of Rushden and Diamonds previous promotions have as champions. Brian was in charge when the club won promotion to the League in 2000-2001, and 6th is the lowest he has ever finished in a League campaign with them. Can Rushden and Diamonds can be the new Wimbledon, and rise all the way to the top ?! Promotion itself came on 19 April 2003, after a 2-1 away victory against Carlisle United. Arbroath Relegated Arbroath managed by 1970-71 star, John Brownlie (Hibernian) have been relegated from the Scottish Division One in their second season, having finished 7th (out of 10) last season. A 4-1 away defeat to Division One runaway leaders, Falkirk on 19 April 2003, saw the end of Arbroath's slim hopes in what has been a dismal season. Currently the club have just 15 points with a minus 42 goal difference, and will be relegated in last place, as they are 14 points points behind Alloa and Ross County with just 3 games to play. John's son, Paul is also a member of the Arbroath team. 15 April 2003 Firmani For Hall of Fame ? It was great to hear that Eddie Firmani (Crystal Palace Chief Scout) has been nominated on the 'Builders' side of the NASL Hall of Fame. Eddie had been the manager of Charlton Athletic up to the 1969-70 season, but it was in the United States and Canada that Eddie made his name. He was the coach of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, New York Cosmos, Philadelphia Fury, and Montreal Manic. Here's a letter from Jack Huckel which announces the shortlist...
