September 2002 News

News of other stars from the 1970-71 season.

26 September

Houston Comes ... and Goes

Stewart Houston (Chelsea), replaced fellow Bob 70-71 Pages star, Dave Merrington (Burnley), as first team coach of Walsall earlier this season.

Dave left 'for family reasons' and Stewart, who was George Graham's right hand man at Arsenal 1986-1995, took over. In February 1995, Stewart took over at Arsenal, but left in October 1996 to manage QPR. He was there for a year before reuniting with George at Tottenham Hotspur, which is the last these pages knew of his whereabouts.

However, the post was for just a one month contract, which ended on 19 September. Walsall are 17th in Division One after 10 matches.

Moss's Side

Saw Unibond Division One side, Matlock Town play the other week, and who should I find out is their manager these days, but Ernie Moss (Chesterfield). The last Bob's 70-71 Pages knew of Ernie he was Peter Morris's assistant at Kettering Town, but presumably left after Peter left. The side are presently 7th in League after 9 games.

Ernie still holds Chesterfield's record of League goals scored, scoring 161 in three spells at the club from1969-76,1979-81, and 1984-86.

Advocaat No Longer Belongs to Glasgow

Dick Advocaat (ADO), who ended his role as manager of Rangers last season and took over as the Director of Football, will sever all his links with Rangers in November. This will allow him to concentrate on his role as the coach for the Netherlands national side. The Netherlands failed to make this year's World Cup Finals and want to be especially sure of making Euro 2004.

Rangers will not appoint a new Director of Football.

The Great Lambino

I don't always remember to report Manager of the Month awards, but this one felt special. The retiring Top Bob winner (2001), John Lambie (St Johnstone), who has taken Partick Thistle up two divisions to the Scottish Premier League, won the first top manager award of the season.

Sir Alex Happy

In a week where Manchester United lost twice in a row (just thought I'd mention it !!!), manager and Bob70-71 player, Sir Alex Ferguson was in the news for a record breaking 7 wins in a row. The wins were for the race horse he half owns, Rock of Gibraltar.

BBC SPORT Other Sports Horse Racing Rock makes history reports

Rock of Gibraltar made history with a record seventh straight Group One race victory in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp on Sunday.

Sir Alex Ferguson's colt poured on the pace inside the last furlong to beat French-trained filly Banks Hill, a winner at last year's Breeders Cup.

Grand Criterium (Longchamp - Oct, 2001)
Dewhurst Stakes (Newmarket - Oct, 2001)
2,000 Guineas (Newmarket - May, 2002)
Irish 2,000 Guineas (Curragh - May, 2002)
St James' Palace Stakes
(Ascot - June, 2002)
Sussex Stakes (Goodwood - Aug, 2002)
Prix du Moulin (Longchamp - Sep, 2002)

Rock of Gibraltar, from trainer Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle stable, bided his time in the one-mile contest as stablemate and pacemaker Sahara Desert blazed the trail.

But a blistering turn of foot saw off Richard Hughes and Banks Hill by three-quarters-of-a length with Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Gossamer in third.

Manchester United manager Ferguson, who has a half share in the horse, said: "I am extremely happy and this is one of the best days of my life.

"It is difficult to compare this with football as I give the orders, whereas in racing I leave everything to Aidan."

O'Brien's yard has recently been hit by a bout of coughing.

But that did not stop Rock of Gibraltar overhauling Mill Reef's 30-year-old record, which he equalled last month when winning the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

Rock equals record

O'Brien said: "Rock Of Gibraltar is probably the best miler I have ever trained and he may take the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (at Ascot later this month) en route to the Breeders' Cup Mile (in Chicago in October).

"He is unlucky not to be unbeaten, as both times (he has lost) circumstances militated against him.

"There can be no doubting he is a truly exceptional talent."

Addison Returns !

Colin Addison (Sheffield United) is the new manager of Forest Green Rovers from the Nationwide Conference League. He takes over from Nigel Spink the former Aston Villa goalkeeper. Forest Green are bottom of the Conference and the sacking came after 5 successive defeats.

The last time Bob 70-71 caught up with Colin he was manager of Swansea City in the Third Division. The club finished 20th last season, but Colin left the side in March after just 7 months at the club, when his contract was not renewed. The Official line was that this was for financial reasons rather than footballing ones.

In July, Colin had moved to Newport County as assistant manager to Tim Harris. Colin had twice been their manager before in their League days from 1978-79 and 1982-85. Though Colin had a one year contract, he has moved on to Forest Green Rovers after just three months.
