| Bob 70-71 | April 2002 NewsNews of other stars from the 1970-71 season 27 April Graydon Returns ! Ray Graydon has returned to Bristol Rovers, the club he made his League debut for in the 1965-66 season. Indeed 1970-71 was his last ever seson for the club before making his name with Aston Villa during the Seventies. His return as manager of Bristol Rovers,comes after a spell in the wilderness following his sacking by Walsall in January 2002. Bristol Rovers had their worst ever season finishing 91st in the League, the lowest place possible without losing League staus. There was a 9 point cushion above relegated Halifax Town, but Ray will relish trying to turn the Club's fortunes around. He replaces Gary Thompson, whowas sacked earlier in the month. new Rovers boss Jim Smith Sacked ! Coventry City,who failed to make the Play-offs in their first season in Division One have sacked their manager, Roland Nilsson, and with him goes Jim Smith (Boston United). The club finished 11th in the league, but more was expected from the club, which spend 1967 to 2001 in the top league. Smith was brought in by Nilssson on 3 January after a run of poor results, but the club failed to win in 6 games in March and April, which killed off the chance of a play-off place. sack Nilsson and Smith Buckley Sacked ! Alan Buckley (Nottingham Forest) has been sacked as manager of Fourth Division Lincoln City, who finished a lowly 22nd this season. As with Roy McFarland at Torquay United (see news) the money that is no longer coming from On Digital is blamed. But 90th in the Leagueisn't that brilliant a finish a place even if Lincoln City did have a 10 point cushion over bottom placed Halifax Town ! Alan had been manager for 14 months. leaves Lincoln Burton Sacked ! Terry Burton (Arsenal youth) has been sacked by Wimbledon. Back in 1970-71 being placed 9th in Division One would have been beyond Wimbledon's wildest dreams ! Wombles were unheard of, and Dickie Guy was just a name on the club sheet. These days with Premiership experience under their belt, missing out on the play-offs is below the club's ambitions. There was also a dispute over playing Peter Hawkins in the last game when told not to, but this was denied by all concerns.Terry had been manager for just under 2 years. Burton dismissal Up the Swedes ! Sven-Göran Eriksson's (Karlskoga) was on the front pages of the newspapers for the second week in a row, in a most un-predictable way. Even the large papers became involved with the did-they didn't they debate about his alleged liason with fellow Swede, Ulrika Jonsson, t.v.personality and former partner to the controversial footballer Stan Collymore. Sven-Göran, who's love life gives hope to football-obsessed, miopic, bald, over-fifty year old males everywhere, has stayed quiet on the issue. He spoke of his press treatment in Italy being mild in comparison to the English press on the issue. Even though he didn't utter a word on the subject - his reaction to the questions on his private life knocked real news - like updates on the conflict in Israel - off the leading headlines in every national television news programme, too ! Sven-Göran sex-God ... I'm sorry I struggle with that one. Meanwhile England had a great last game on home soil before the World Cup Finals. A comfortable 4-0 win at Anfield versus Paraguay was made sweeter by the fact that the side played well without thier captain David Beckham. MichaelOwen deputised and scored after just 3 minutes. From looking up some of the details on the BBC website, I see that the BBC have secured the rights to Sven-Göran's authorised biography. This will cover both his private life and football career. cool 14 April Lambie Does It Again !!
John Lambie For the second season running, John Lambie (St Johnstone)- the Great Lambino - has guided Partick Thistle to a Championship ! A fine 2-0 victory away to St Mirren, whilst Airdrie lost 2-1 away to Raith Rovers, gave Partick Thistle a ten point lead in the Scottish Division One with 2 games still to play. This is a magnificent return to the Scottish Premier League for the club that was relegated from the top League in 1995-96. This is Partick Thistle's second First Division Championship, as they were the winners in 1975-76 - the first season that the First Division ceased to be the top division. Partick have also won the Second Division four times including the 1970-71 season itself ! John Lambie is the current holder of the Top Bob Award for Partick Thistle's emphatic Second Division Championship of last season (see Top Bob). He truely is Great ! Little Out Not strictly speaking a 70-71 player, but Bob's 70-71 Pages keeps tabs on Alan Little (Sons and Daughters: Brothers) as he is Brian's (Aston Villa) brother. Well rather like his brother at Hull City, Alan has been sacked by the Third Division side he was in charge of, Halifax Town. Halifax have suffered their second expulsion from top flight football just four years since their return. Halifax were original members of the Division Three (North) in 1921 and have spent just the five seasons out of the League football since then. Last year, they escaped relegation by just 2 points, when they finished 23rd the place above relegated Barnet. Incidentally, Halifax Town beat Torquay United 4-2 away from home yesterday ! Champion Taylor (Confirmed !) Peter Taylor (Southend United) has finished the job off taking Brighton and Hove Albion to the expected Second Division Championship reported below. Like Partick Thistle (above) this is Brighton and Hove Albion's second Championship in a row, as Mickey Adams led them to the Division Three title last season. In addition to these Championships, Brighton and Hove won Division Three (South) in 1957-58 and Division Four in 1964-65. The last time they were in Division One was in 1995-96. Lawrie McMenemy (Doncaster Rovers manager) was on Talk Sport last week on the phone in after the Saturday Results had come in. As I wasn't around to listen to it this week I'm still not sure how regular this is. This means Laurie adds his mname to the list of the site's commentators. Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp (actually a full World of Soccer Stars player) has been croping up as the main guest on the Monday edition of the Premiership, too, so I best add him. Eriksson Update Didn't quite get around to mentioning that Sven-Göran Eriksson's (Karlskoga) England team suffered another defeat versus Italy at Elland Road at the back end of last month. His England team went 1-0 up through second captain, Robbie Fowler of Leeds United (just thought I'd drop that in) but an equaliser soon followed and the last kick of the game gave the Italians victory. It's only the second defeat under Sven-Göran, but that's now four games without a win, the last one being the 2-0 Albanian World Cup qulaifier last September. hands on a picture of David Beckham's broken foot. 8 April 2002 Champion Keegan ! Well done to Kevin Keegan who helped Manchester City back to the Premiership as Champions with two games still to play. Indeed, Man City were the first Champions in England, and did so having scored over 100 goals ! When Kevin was appointed the new manager, some felt that Joe Royle should have at least been allowed a shot at helping the club back into the Premiership after last season's relegation. Not only that, but Kev had only just emerged from the cloud of his failure to take England further than the group stage at Euro 2000. Kevin had resigned as England manager after defeat to Germany at Wembly meant the World Cup Finals qualification also looked in doubt. It is a deserved return to managerial success for Kevin. And the team did it in style. The Championship came with a 5-1 thrashing of Barnsley. Promotion was already theirs due to Wolves losing with Millwall the night before. Well, actually not quite yet, but Peter Taylor's (Southend United) Brighton and Hove Albion have won promotion from Division Two, and stand a good chance of getting the Championship into the bargain. Peter had been sacked by Leicester City earlier in the season. Ironically the Brighton and Hove post became available because the then manager, Mickey Adams, left to become coach of Peter's old team, Leicester City. As Leicester City have been relegated, the two managers will face each other in Division One next year !! Brighton and Hove won promotion thanks to a 2-2 draw on Sunday between 2nd placed Reading and Tranmere Rovers. With 6 points to play for Brighton and Hove have a 4 point advantage over Reading so the Championship is there for the taking. See BBC SPORT ENGLISH DIVISION 2
Brighton gain promotion Relegated Bassett ! A 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United meant there was to be no joy for Dave Bassett (Walton and Hersham) in his last match in charge of Leicester City. Dave has been 'kicked upstairs' into the role of Director of Football, with his assistant, Mickey Adams taking charge of the team. This had apparantly always been theplan anyway. The defeat also confirmed Leicester City as the first side relegated from the Premiership this season. With 12 points to play for Leicester City can technically finish above Ipswich Town and Derby County, but realistically, the side are most likely to finish bottom. Leicester City will aim to pick up at least 2 more points. With 22 points, Leicester City are still below the Premiershipworst points total of Watford, who got 24 points in 1999-2000.
