| Bob 70-71 | June 2000 News22 June, 2000 Kevin Keegan's England Out - Martin Does Bonetti Impression Ironically the only time England did not come from a lead to a 3-2 defeat in the whole Euro 2000 competition was against Germany. Ironic becacuse England famously lost to West Germany 3-2 after a 2-0 lead in the 1970 World Cup Finals. Whilst the last game in the group was only a 2-1 lead there was a further similarity to the 1970 game in that the reserve goalkeeper (Nigel Martin / Peter Bonetti) drafted in at the last minute was largely reponsible for letting in the 2-2 equalising goal which gave the Romanian team the upper hand for the rest of the match. Kev was philosohical and the English newspapers about turned their opinion of his management for the third time in not many more days. Thank You, Shreeves Peter Shreeves whose 70-71 status is still not confirmed, was told that he would keep a job at Sheffield Wednesday even if he were not made the permanent manager. The next day Peter Jewel the 35 year old former Bradford City manager was duly confirmed as Wednesday's new manager and Shreeves reverted back to the post of coach. Italy were the first team to get through to the next round of Euro 2000. Their coach is none other than the former 1968 winner of the trophy, Dino Zoff. Dino was goalkeeper at Napoli back in 70-71. Andrew Bubeer has written this article which appears at LEICESTER CITY FC New City manager Peter Taylor is probably best remembered as a player for his four years at Tottenham Hotspur, yet he was initially rejected by the White Hart Lane club, and it was while at Crystal Palace that he earned both full and under-23 honours for England, becoming one of the few players to represent England whilst plying their trade in the old Third Division. Taylor represented both South East Essex and Canvey Island at schoolboy level before joining Southend United as an apprentice. He signed professional forms at Roots Hall in January 1971, but he soon stood out as a real talent and moved to Crystal Palace just under three years later. His England debut came as a substitute against Wales in March 1976 and he marked it with a goal in a 2-1 win at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground. He made a further three appearances for his country that year against Wales once more, Northern Ireland and Scotland. A move to the top-flight was inevitable and his big chance arrived in the September of that year when Tottenham paid £400,000 for his services. Just as he had done with England, Taylor marked his debut at West Bromwich Albion with a goal. Although signed as a winger, Taylor also had the ability to perform in midfield and wasn't averse either to helping out in defence. He was unable to prevent Spurs from being relegated during his first season, but proved a key member of the following year's side which bounced back at the first attempt. He missed just one game during the promotion campaign, but then found himself on the sidelines when Ricky Villa arrived from Argentina.
His misfortune was then compounded by a series of injuries and Spurs allowed him to move on to Orient for just £150,000. He made over 50 appearances for the Brisbane Road outfit in three-and-a-half years (and had a brief loan spell at Oldham Athletic) before dropping into non-league football with Maidstone United. He made a brief return to League football in October 1983 as a non-contract player with Exeter City, managed by his former Palace team-mate Gerry Francis. He then returned to Maidstone as player-manager, leading them to the Gola League title, and also had spells at Heybridge Swifts, Chelmsford City and Dartford where he began his managerial journey. His playing days weren't over however. In August 1991 he was appointed as assistant manager at Watford (Steve Perryman, another former team-mate, was in charge at Vicarage Road), but still turned out on occasions for Harlow Town although his appearances were restricted to midweek games and only when his commitments at Watford allowed. 12 June 2000 am Taylor Made Leicester Boss ? Kenny Dalglish Now that Martin O'Neill is the new Celtic manager, speculation has risen as to Kenny Dalglish's (Celtic squad) role at the club. Kenny had stood in as JohnBarnes' replacement and even won the Scottish League Cup in that time. Now he has reverted back into his position as the Director of Football, but the question arises as to whether the new manager will put up with him doing this ! 3 June, 2000 Sulk No More ... Just as I'd taken my bat and ball home Stuart Williamson reveals to me that Terry Owen's (Bradford City) son Michael is a part of Kevin Keegan's squad for Euro 2000. Sound. See Keegan names his final 22 for Euro 2000 2 June, 2000 No Go Joe Well Joe Kinnear (Tottenham Hotspur squad) has finally decided about the Sheffield Wenesday job, and he's given it the 'v's up, which will delight the Wednesday fans, I'm sure. Is it a coincidence that Joe's refusal coincides with the Leicester post becoming available ? Natrually Joe has already been linked with the new post, but then he always is ! The official reason given out by both sides is that Joe believed he needed money to develop the team, and the Wednesday board were looking at more of a repeat Wimbledon performance, i.e. success on a shoestring.
