Rovers Return For Francis

On the first of the month, Gerry Francis (QPR) left QPR to return to Bristol Rovers to be their manager. Bristol Rovers were relegated from Division Two in 21st place last year, so this is the club's first season in the League's bottom Division since 1953 when it was the old Division 3 (South).

When Gerry was last manager (1987-1991), he help the club gain the Division 3 Championship (1989-90), so he has been given a hero's return. Few outside the club give him much chance of creating any immedite miracles, however.

Wilkinson Steps Down

Well, continuing the theme that no-one's ever sacked these days, as such Howard Wilkinson has finally done the decent thing and stepped aside from the post as coach to the England Under-21s. Howard still has a role with the FA as it's Technical Director.

This has allowed David Platt to step into the role as the new coach. Platt is seen as Sven-Göran Eriksson's first choice, as he played for Sven-Göran at Lazio. Platt's appointment left the vacancy at Forest filled by Paul Hart (see below).

Sven-Göran Sings !

Well it's not often the site gives you the opprtunity to sing-a-long a football star. And quite rightly. This is rather sweet, though. Sven-Göran Eriksson (Degerfors) can he heard at Sven-Göran sings - Football365.com singing a Swedish nursery rhyme.

Taylor Talks !

Since his retirement from football management with Watford, Graham Taylor (Lincoln City) has become a Non-Executive Director at Aston Villa. He intends to fulfill this role whilst working in the media over the next two years. According to a report on Football365.com, it seems that he has not given up the hope of international football management. Whilst he accepts the England job may be ruled out - there is several hundred countries out there, so who knows ?!

James Returns

Leighton James (Burnley squad) has returned as Director of Football to the League of Wales side, Port Talbot Town. As well as being involved with the first team, Leighton will be overseeing the youth developments at the club.

The club have changed their name from Athletic last season, and have also appointed a new first team manager, Wayne Goodridge, whom James will be working alongside. Last season the club were 16th in an 18 team League, and failed to win in their last 6 matches. The changes hope to bring fresh start for the club.

Bradford Park Avenue Promoted !

One promotion story that Bob's 70-71 pages missed was Bradford Park Avenue's Championship in the Unibond Division One. Their manager is Trevor Storton (Tranmere Rovers).

Bradford PA themselves just missed League status in 70-71 having been voted out in 1970 to be replaced by Cambridge United. The club folded four years later and re-emerged in 1988. This was their 8th step up the non-league pyramid since then.

The last Bradford derby was in January 1969 - the next could be in 2003 if last season's events keep repeating themselves !

Hart is Promoted

Paul Hart (Stockport County) is promoted to the manager's post following the departure of David Platt to become the new Under-21's coach for England. Paul was already at the club as the youth team coach, and was also a player at the club from 1983-1985.

My greatest memory of Paul is, of course, in the the days at Leeds United, when as a player he scored own goals in successive matches - quite a feat that caused quite a laugh on the terraces at the time... Paul was also responsible for the Leeds youth players that have now developed into the current team.

Well done Paul, let's see a return of Forest to the Premiership !
