news:
Juan
Sebastian Verón is added to the site for the first time
(See below).
Rich List
The only
footballer to make the 2003 Sunday Times Rich List
is David Beckham - listed with his wife, Posh Spice,
Victoria. With an estimated 50 million pounds to his name
this placed Becks as high as 5th in the list of the top
100 under 30 year olds.
The
alternative list of younger people also included two Bob
70-71 Next Generation Stars. Michael Owen
(see below)
with 18 million pounds was placed at equal 16th, and Juan
Verón (see below) with 10 million is at equal
31.
Michael
has increased his wealth from 12 million pounds last year
due to Sponsorship deals, and has a company, Owen
Promotions with net assets of 2 million pounds. Juan
Verón is up from 8 million pounds last year, he earned a
4 million pound signing on fee from his move to Man U
from Lazio.
Becks
headed a further list of the ten wealthiest young (under
30) sportsmen, which had Michael at number 3 (Naseem
Hamed was at number two), and Juan at equal 8th.
Angela
Saunders is set to join
the Next Generation page as the daughter-in-law of Ray
Clemence (Liverpool). Angela is the actress who
plays Tash Parker, an ex-model married to a footballer in
the Sky TV programme, 'Dream Team'. She is 25 years old
and plans to marry Stephen Clemence in May.
Dream Team
is on SkyOne 8pm on Sundays, and is currently featured in
the May 3003 'Sky:the Magazine' sent to Sky subscribers.
Gabby Logan - daughter of
Terry Yorath (Leeds United) - was listed as one the Daily
Mail's 100 most Influential Women in Britain on 31
March 2003. And though I can't confirm this, I believe I
saw Gabby's picture as part of this year's poster
campaign for book week, too.
Martin
Allen - son of Dennis Allen (Bournemouth) - Thanks very much to Tony Hammond, who
informs me that since Peter Shreeves left Conference
side, Barnet in March 2003, Martin has moved up from
first team coach to caretaker manager till the end of the
season. This site last caught up with Martin as as the
first team coach at Reading.

Shreeves quits Barnet
Chris Hollins Thanks to Robert Lifford who reports
that Chris "is a sports reporter for BBC News 24. He
is the son of John Hollins (Chelsea) and, therefore, the nephew of Dave
Hollins. He was on QPR books at one point and has played
for Aldershot town in the Ryman League.
He was also a first class cricketer having played for
Oxford University. He scored a
century at Lords in the University match".

1 March
2003 (edition) Featured on the front cover
of Match for what is now a rare occasion. He
is pictured with David Beckham, with the title
'Showdown' referring to the up-coming League Cup
Final between Liverpool and Manchester United.
2 March
2003 Michael is a member of the League Cup
winning side, as Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0
at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. To add to the
achievement, Michael also scored the second goal in
the 86th minute.
This will go
some way towards making up for being named to sit on
the bench but not playing in the 2001 League Cup
victory for Liverpool versus Birmingham City.
Michael honours
now read:
FA Cup Winner in 2001 (scored 2 in Final),
League Cup winner 2002 (scored 1 in Final)
UEFA Cup winner in 2001,
Super Cup winner 2001 (scored 1 in Final)
FA Community Shield 2001 (scored 1).
Pretty
impressive I would say.
March
2003: England
launch yet another new shirt with Michael Owen being
the leading England star that heads the campaign. The
first match in the new shirt is the Euro 2004
qualifier v Lietchenstein.
29
March 2003 Michael plays for England in the
Euro 2004 away match in Lietchenstein. Michael plays
the whole 90 minutes and scores in the 2-0 victory.
This was
Michael's 46th cap in his sixth season in the England
team. He now has 20 goals, which is the 17th best of
all time, see England Goalscorers for the Top Twenty.
29
March 2003 (edition) of Match magazine has
Michael as the main star on its cover. A goal
celebrating Michael is pictured, in the red England
kit with a baloon from his mouth saying,' Hands up if
da opposition is a bunch of Turkeys!'. A comment I
very much doubt has passed Michael's highly
diplomatic lips, nor one that help our Nation's youth
to be tolerant of our international neighbours, but
still. The picture is being used to promote a Euro
2004 magazine special.
31
March 2003: At the end of the month,
Michael's 24 goals this season is the equal third
highest for a Premiership player in all competitions,
and with 13 Premiership goals he is the 5th highest
in the League.
2 April
2003 Michael plays the home tie for England
v Turkey in the Euro 2004 qualifier. The press had
given England a hard time for winning just 2-0
against Lietchenstein, and feared what Turkey might
do, as they were placed higher in the World rankings.
Hence, the
comfortable-ish 2-0 victory set the country alight
again, and was hailed as the best win for the
national side since the World Cup victory versus
Denmark.
The game
belonged to Wayne Rooney, who is the brightest
England 17 year old since...well Michael Owen.
Michael left
the pitch for Darius Vassell, when it was still 0-0
in the 58th minute, and it was Darius who scored the
second of the goals.
Michael has now
been capped 47 times.
26
April 2003: Liverpool thrash West Bromwich
Albion 6-0 away from home in the Premiership, and
Michael gets scores 4 ! This is Michaels's third
hatrichk this season the last two being on 28
September 2002 v Man City in the Premeiership, and on
2 Octoberr 2002 v Spartak Moscow in the Champions
League..
You have to go
back to 24 October 1998 for the only other time
Michael has scored four in a top class game. It was v
Nottingham Forest in the Premiership in a 5-1 home
victory for Liverpool.
This is
Michaels's 11th hatrick and the first time he has
scored three in a season. It means he moves up to 3rd
in the Leading Premiership scorers list with 30 in
all competitions. He is 4th highest scorer of
Premiership goals this season with 19.
The 2nd of the
goals was his 100th in the Premiership. Robbie Fowler
has scored Liverpool's most Premiership goals with
120, and Roger Hunt (Bolton
Wanderers) has
Liverpool's League goals record with 245.
27
April 2003 Michael is listed in the young
person's Rich List , see above.
May
2003 edition: The May 2003 (Number105)
edition of FourFourTwo magazine includes a picture of
Michael on the front cover in the red England shirt.
His the largest picture of a dozen players promoting
the article asking, 'who is the best striker in the
world today?', though in the event he wasn't in the
Top 10 listed.
The edition
also includes a full page advert of Michael in the

March 2003: Paul is an unlikely part of the
heroic Welsh side that beat Azerbaijan side 4-0 to
help the country lead the Euro 2004 qualifiying Group
9 with maximum points.
It was already
3-0 when he came on for the second half. This is the
9th cap for Paul, who plays his League matches for a
struggling Division Two side.
This is Paul's
3rd cap as a Northampton Town player, but he has some
way to go to overhaul the Northampton club record
holder, E.Lloyd Davies. Davies was capped 12 times
for Wales whilst at the club between 1908 and 1914,
plus a further 4 times when he was at Stoke in 1904.

2003 (edition) The cover to Shoot
Monthly is a gatefold special with David Beckham
on the front posing in a cowboy/Man U outfit in the
latest Pepsi advertising campaign.
The cover,
which even has bullet holes cut into it, opens up
like a saloon door to feature Becks and 4 more Man U
stars under the heading 'Most Wanted', and including
Juan.
The Pepsi
campaign, which imagine cost more money than it takes
to run a small country, centres round Becks and his
Man U posse. The TV advert, which Juan is in too, has
a shoot out with stars from Real Madrid headed by
Roberto Carlos. T
The actual cans
for sale definately have pictures of either Beckham
or Carlos on, but I don't believe the other players
are featured.
