Owen and Lampard in Sven-Göran's First Squad

Next Generation stars Michael Owen and Frank Lampard, both keep their places in the England squad to play the freindly againgst Spain tomorrow. The fixture would barely have made the news but for the fact that it is Sven-Göran Eriksson's (Karlskoga) first game in charge of the England team. Erik has rather hedged his bets with a massive 31 man squad, but both players must be favourites to make the 18 that Sven intends playing on the day.

Frank has the following to say about the game at West Ham United FC

(Frank) reckons it is time to stop harping on about England having a foreign manager for the first time, but admits:

"At first I thought maybe we should have an english manager but the man has got great knowledge so now I don't think it matters.English people will take him as an honorary englishman if he does the stuff for us."

With Monday largely a 'getting to know you' exercise, Frank is already enamoured by what he has seen and heard from the new boss.

"I think he has shown with the way that he speaks, a lot of people have been quite impressed by the way he comes across. But I'm sure at the end of the day he will be judged by results so it is up to him and to the players to start putting things right on the pitch.

"He knows what he's talking about, you can tell that from how successful he has been in his career. When the games start coming the results will determine just how much english people do like him."

As for the Spain game which will kick things off, he says:

"I'm sure he will experiment a bit and it is a great chance for everyone to stake a claim. It's a funny old time because we are stumbling along in the world cup qualifiers and the corner has to be turned quickly. If we stick together hopefully we can do it. It is a fresh start and it is important we get started this week ahead of the qualifiers next month."

Frank Scores - Twice!

Whilst we're on the subject of Frank, he won't have done his England hopes any harm by scoring both goals in West Ham United's 2-1 away victory against Bradford. The goals in the 18th and 75th minutes were the first and last in the game. This was West Ham's first victory in the League since Boxing Day ! See West Ham United FC - Bradford City Away report

Boardman Scores - Two Goals

Ossett Town's very own webmaster, Craig Boardman - George's son (Barnsley) - has scored twice this month. First of he got the Ossett Town's second goal in the 2-0 home victory v Farsley Celtic, and last Saturday he got the second in a 2-1 home defeat of Guiseley. Both games were in the Ryman Division One. Presently Ossett Town are riding high at 5th in the League though they have played more games than most of the other teams in the League.

Jamie Lifts the Cup - Owen Warms the Bench

Liverpool won the League Cup beating Birmingham City 5-4 on penalties on Sunday - after being held to 1-1 after extra time. Liverpool's official website said that if Liverpool did win the cup against their Division One opposition, it would be Jamie Redknapp the Liverpool Club captain, who would lift the cup, even though he remains out of the team through injury Whether or not this happened I've no idea, because I didn't watch the match - but the thought had been there if it didn't ... See Official Liverpool FC Website - News Article - Jamie to lift cup if Reds triumph - 24-2-2001

Meanwhile, Michael Owen remained on the substitutes bench for this game. Houllier stood by his decision of leaving out one of England's top players, after all his side did successfully scrape through as barely worthy winners against the lower league opposition. Rich List

'The Sunday Mirror' this Sunday, 18th February, 2001, printed it's 'Rich List' of UK and UK based entertainers and sports stars. The second highest place footballer was our very own Michael Owen ! Whilst running around the Valley Parade pitch in a muddy Winter's afternoon, would Terry Owen (Bradford City) ever have imagined that his son would one day be earning 4.5 million pounds for doing essentially what he was doing.

Only fifth placed David Beckham was placed hight than Michael The Manchester United star brought home a tidy 6.5 million, and earned more that his wife, Posh Spice, Victoria Adams (The 4 Spice Girls earned 8 million pounds between them).

At a mere 21 years of age, Michael was placed 6th in the Under Thirty List and he was also 6th in the overall Sports Stars List.

Kissable List

'Star', the celebrity magazine, this week (No.9 February 14-27, 2001) has printed top 100s of the most kissable men and the most kissabale women - in their opinion. (The criteria for such decisions wasn't given !!) Once again Michael Owen is there at a lowly 53. Jamie Redknapp managed no.79, but there was no place for his dad, Harry !

In the women's list Hannah Spearritt, who has been/is connected with Paul Dalglish - Kenny's (Celtic squad) son - managed no.68. But the highest placed Next Generation star is Jamie Redknapp's wife, Louise at no 37.

EMI - Thrrrrrrrp !

There is no truth in the rumour that Louise is about to record a version of the Sex Pistols, 'EMI' following the ending of her contract with them. According to the 'Star' magazine (No.9 February 14-27, 2001) the contract that EMI had for distributing Louise's records is not going to be renewed. The recording contract with First Avenue Records, continues, however, so hopefully there will be some new releases in the near future.

Three Next Generation Stars Score Third Goals !

1) Shilton Scores !

Sam Shilton - Peter's son - got his fifth goal of the season last week. It completed the perfect comeback for Hartlepool United away to Carlisle United in Division Three. Trailing 2-0 at half time, Sam's 81st minute goal gave the side a 3-2 victory. Hartlepool are in the top play-off position and could get an automatic promotion place.See The Official Hartlepool United Football Club.

2) Currie Scores !

Darren Currie -Tony's nephew - also got the third goal, in the 68th minute, in a 3-0 home victory by Barnet v Darlington in Division 3 last Saturday. Barnet are now very middle of the table virtually safe from the drop, but 12 points from the play-offs. See BeesBeesBees.com - Story

3) Brownlie Scores !

Paul Brownlie - John's (Hibernian)son - was another generation star to get his side's third goal. It came in the 55th minute in a 4-2 home victory for Arbroath versus Clydebank in the Scottish Division Two last Saturday. Paul's goal put the team in the lead for the third time in the match, and a fourth finally killed off any further comebacks. Arbroath remain in third place, just a point away from a promotion placed Stranraer, but have played two games more. SeeThe Official Arbroath Football Club Web Pages.

Owen Scores -twice !

There was I thinking Michael Owen was sidelined, only to see him (on the telly) score twice for Liverpool in their UEFA Cup 4th round first leg (away) tie against A.S Roma. Michael has given Liverpool an unbelievably good chance of continuing on to the next round of the competition with the only two goals in the game scored in the 46th and 71st minutes. See Official Liverpool FC Website - Match Summary 2000-01 - AS Roma (Premier League - A) - 15.02.01

Steffen's Back !

Steffen Iverson - Odd's son (Racing Mechelen) - is back from injury after nearly 4 months out of the game. Steffen has been Spurs' leading goalscorer for two seasons, but required two lots of knee surgery in October, which has kept him out of the action so far this season.

Smaller Ugly Big-Headed Footballers

Corinthian, the company that make the collectable series of ugly big-headed models of footballers (featured previously on this site in the last centuary) have come up with a new game of table football for which you would require their 'Micro-Stars' - smaller versions of the existing models. The models are available from inside chocolate 'PowerPodz' - a bit like those chocolate eggs with gifts in only more footbally-looking.

Anyway, the point is that in their first batch of 23 different Microstars released for the game, Michael Owen and Frank Lampard (Frank senior's son (West Ham United) have been included. I've got my first model free with 'Match' the weekly football magazine (17 February, 2001 edition), but the PowerPodz come on sale from 13 March. I'm sure their site, www.microstars.co.ukeverything you need to know about how to play the game !!! will explain

Own Owen's Own Shirt !

Michael is presently sidelined, so he obviously has no need for his England shirt. If you want to win it - signed!- then you can enter the competition in 'Match' this week (17 February, 2001 edition). There's also boxes of 5 Walkers crisps for each of the winner and two runners-up.

All you need to do is answer the question - which jug-eared TV presenter is Michael's enemy in the famous Walker's adverts ? Which is Gary Lineker, of course. Send your answers to : Michael Owen shirt comp., MATCH, Bretton Court, Bretton, Peterborough, PE3 8DZ by 1 March 2001.

Oakes Saves again!

All right Andy, you've made your point ... Andy played another blinder yesterday, which is all very well but this time it kept my team, Leeds United to 0-0 at Elland Road ! Alan still hasn't let a goal in wearing a Derby County first team shirt. I was listening to the match live and Norman Hunter on Radio Leeds was glowing with praise for Andy. See www.dcfc.co.uk

Summerbee Moves !

I overlooked this one from last month, but Nicky Summerbee - Mike's son - moved from Sunderland to Bolton Wanderers of Divsion One. The fee was undisclosed and came about following a fall out with Sunderland's manager, Peter Reid. See Bolton Wanderers FC - Nicky Summerbee

Video Nasty

The Reknapp's (Harry and clan) were burgled last week according to the Daily Express (as reported by www.football365.co.uk daily newspaper). It seems the item that they regret losing the most is a video of Jamie's knee operation ! Not the home video the burglers would have hoped to have stumbled across ...

Shakey Louise

And talking of the Redknapps on film. Louise (Harry's daughter-in-law) was caught (literally) by the E4 sattelite Channel programme 'Banzai' for their feature with Mr Shakey-Hands. One of the programme's highlights is when a Japanese reporter talks with various celebraties whilst shaking their hands.

Whilst passing off as a legitimate and rather friendly reporter, he is actually seeing how long he can shake the celeb's hand for and 'Bonzai' viewers are encouraged to guess the number of seconds it will last. It has me in stitches. Assertive Louise was caught for just 32 seconds (from memory) - the record from a few weeks ago was four and a half minutes !

Owen to his Injury

Michael Owen -Terry's son (Bradford City)- has been able to take a break from his inconvenient football career due to injury problems, which has allowed him to return to his main profession - sponsorship! First off is the staggering 12 page Umbro advert in this month's FourFourTwo magazine (No79 March 2001). Michael is seen with Henrik Larsson and Louis Masserella (442 jounalist) in a mock article about football training promoting Umbro's Pro-training line.

Sans Louis Masserella (mostly), 'Match' - the weekly football magazine - has photos from the same occassion in the article, ' Training as a Pro with Michael Owen'. The three page spread is featured in this week's February 10th, 2001 edition, and shows that the photo-shoot took place at Northwch Victoria's ground!

Is that Terry Owen in the first picture with the caption ' Michael was training so hard he aged 30 years !', I ask ?

See www.umbro.com/protraining/ which includes skills tips from Michael.

Oakes Saves !

Great to see Andy Oakes (Alan's nephew, Manchester City) being interviewed on, 'Match of the Day' last Saturday. Andy played his debut for Derby County having signed from Hull City in July 1999 for 450,000 pounds. After a quite game, goalkeeper Andy made a breathtaking last minute save that gave Derby County the three points and Andy a clean sheet.

The match was a home tie versus Sunderland, and finished 1-0 to Derby County. See DCFC Web Site - game and DCFC Web Site - Andy Oakes

Walker Stays!

Fellow Next Generation goalkeeper, Ian Walker (Mike's son Watford) meanwhile, had managed two clean sheets since his recall into the Spurs side. Natrually he was a bit miffed at being dropped again as soon as Neil Sullivan was fit to play. It reached the paper's headlines that Ian wanted to leave the club believing he had no future there. George Graham, the Spurs manager says Ian has not asked for a transfer, and that the competition for places has done him good !
