Michael Owen, son of Terry Owen (Bradford City), made headline news throughout the football World when he signed for FA Premiership side Newcastle United having finally given up the ghost of ever being a hero in Spain at Real Madrid. The fee was 16,000,000 pounds.

Paul Dalglish, son of Kenny Dalglish (Celtic squad), who had left football briefly and was presenting for Sky's football programme 'Soccer AM' has returned to play for Scottish Premier League side Livingston. He makes his debut at top level in the Scottish League Cup 2nd Round away to Raith Rovers. In the 69th minute Paul scored the final goal in a 2-1 victory completing a comeback from being 1-0 down, shortly afterwards he is substituted.

As fas as I can trace this is his first top level game since leaving Linfield in January 2004. His last English league game was a League Two Play-off match for Scunthorpe United, which the team lost 1-0 (or 6-3 on aggregate) to Lincoln City on 14 May 2003. Paul has played for a Scottish team previously as a junior for Celtic, whom he left in 1996 having not played at the highest level.

NB Paul makes his League debut on 27 August, 2005, in a 3-0 away defeat.

Michael Owen, son of Terry Owen (Bradford City), and Frank Lampard, son of Frank Lampard, both play in England's humiliating 4-1 international friendly defeat against Denmark in Parken Stadion, København.

Frank started the match and came off in the 64th minute when it was only 2-0, but Michael had the dubious honour of joining the match at half time when it was still 0-0. This was Frank's 33rd England cap, and Michael's 71st. Frank stays on 8 goals and Michael on 32. Frank was returning to the line-up after missing both games of England's USA tour.

Steffen Iversen, son of Odd Iversen (Racing Mechelen) plays for Norway in a friendly international at home to Swizerland in the Ullevaal stadium, Oslo. Steffen plays just the first half, which ends 0-0. Norway ultimately lose the game 2-0. It is his 54th cap for Norway. It is Steffen's first defeat with Norway in 10 games.

Dave Woodhall has also sent me information on several Aston Villa related players, see Where are they now?

Thanks to this Huddersfield Town now have some extra players included from the 1970-71 Rothmans Football Yearbook.

Whilst browsing the site, I found that the 'Caught In Time' feature at Sunderland win FA Cup, May, 1975 had not been completed. Tidying this up now means that Dick Malone (Ayr United) and Vic Halom (Fulham) have now officially arrived on the site !

Thanks to Dave Woodhall's information (Where are they now?) George Curtis is now on the site at Aston Villa

Andy Gray, son of Frank Gray, set the imagination of future quiz writers alight when he scored for Sheffield United on the opening day of the Championship in their 4-1 home victory against Leicester City on 6 August. Then a week later scores on the opening day of the FA Premiership for Sunderland in their 3-1 home defeat against Charlton Athletic. Andy had moved to Sunderland on 11 August 2005 and this was his debut game and goal for his new club.

Sam Shilton, son of Peter Shilton, debuts for his new club Hinckley United in the Nationwide Conference North Division, and scores. The home match against Lancaster City finished 3-3, thanks to a Hinckley equaliser in the final minute, though Sam's goal in the 36th minute had given the home team a 2-1 lead.

Sam had moved from Burton Albion in the Conference National Division, who are managed by Nigel Clough - son of Brian Clough (Derby County manager)-

Nicky Summerbee, son of Mike Summerbee, makes his debut for Swindon Town in the Football Championship League One having left Bradford City in the Summer. The game was a 2-1 home win against Nottingham Forest, though when he left the pitch in the 69th minute it was still 1-1.

Nicky plays for Swindon on a non-contract basis, and it is a return to the club that gave both he and his father their starts in football. Nicky previously played 112 League games for them the last of which was incredably a Premiership match away to Chelsea on 27 April 1994. Swindon lost 2-0 thanks to goals from Gavin Peacock and Dennis Wise, and only 11,180 bothered to turn up to watch!!! Incidentally, both father and son moved on fron Swindon Town to play for Manchester City.

Danny Talbot, son of Brian Talbot (Ipswich Town), makes his League debut for Potter Bar Town following hios move from Welling United. It is the club's debut in the Division 1 East of the Southern League, a level it has not reached previously. Unfortunately it is a 1-0 home defeat to Barking & East Ham United. Danny's cup debut in the first round of a local competition, the Potters Bar Charity Cup, was a 10-0 win against Cuffley, and Danny scored twice! Danny also scored 3 times in the pre-season friendlies.

Andy Liddell, son of Garry Liddell (Leeds United) scores his very first goals for his new club, Oldham Athletic, in their away match against Swindon Town. The goals in the 38th and 51st minutes (the second a penalty), took the side 3-0 up, though they only just held on to the game to win 3-2.

Andy's last two goal haul was against Aston Villa, in a 3rd round FA Cup match with Sheffield United on 1 March 2005. Sheffield United went on to be knocked out against eventual Cup winners Arsenal, in the 5th round. Arsenal failed to beat them over two games plus extra time, and only knocked them out after penalties in the replay. Andy played in both matches.

Email: Subject Dickie Guy

I know this is probably difficult ground, but to direct people to the M K Dons page for information about Dickie Guy is like waving a red rag in front of a bull.

Apart from the fact that Dickie Guy (Wimbledon) is now president of AFC Wimbledon he has asked M K Dons to remove this information from their site (or at least amend it) on several occasions and has been ignored each time.

I suggest you contact AFC Wimbledon if you want the history of the club or an up to date history of Mr Guy, as even if you do not consider they are the continuation of Wimbledon FC you will find people there who know about the history which is more than you will do at the M K Dons site.

Here is the site with the up to date information:- http://www.afcwimbledon.co.uk/club.php?Psection_id=4

I guess M K Dons do not want to update their site and admit that Mr Guy is not now a supporter.

Lesley Palmer

I try hard with this site to not take sides. Dickie, though, has made his views very clear on this one, thanks very much for pointing this out Lesley. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention.

Rather than updating the link to the M K Dons site for his information, I have just let it lapse out of use. Natrually when I put the information there in May 2000 this wasn't an issue, which explains why I made the link at the time.

Thanks again.

Frank Lampard, son of Frank Lampard, plays in the FA Community Shield against Arsenal in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Chelsea win 2-1, and though Frank was substituted in the final minute, there were no more goals after he left the field.

Carlo Cudicini, son of Fabio Cudicini (A.C. Milan), was also on the Chelsea bench, but did not play.

The game is traditionally the official start of the FA's season, which indeed it was this season, too, though there was a full programme of fixtures from the Football League the previous day. This was Chelsea's fourth appearance in the 'Charity Shield' that usually pits the League Winners against the FA Cup winners. In the 1970-71 season Chelsea represented the Cup winners, but lost 2-1 to Everton. They won their other appearances in 1955 and 2000.

The 2005 Bob Awards!

No public vo-at in the Big Bob 70-71 House this Season, on account of last season's lack of any real interest! I'm sure the internet heaved a big sigh of disappointment. For this season only (?), I have nominated the winners of both the awards.

The Top Bob of the Year Award 2005 is awarded for outstanding achievement by a Bob70-71 Player in the 2004-5 season, and this season it goes to .....drum roll ......

.......Sam Allardyce (Bolton Wanderers youth) for doing what looked impossible taking Bolton Wanderers into Europe for the first time in their otherwise distinguished history. As recently as 2001, Bolton were promoted from the (then) Division One into the Premiership, and everyone outside the club - and no doubt a few iside it, too - thought they would be straight back down the next season. Look at them now - Top Ten regulars ! And they even threaten to reach the Champions League in the near future! Well done Sam.

Previous winners: 2000 Sir Alex Ferguson, 2001 John Lambie, 2002 Sir Bobby Robson, 2003 Brian Talbot (Ipswich Town), 2004 David Hay

The Special Bob Award 2005 is awarded by me to the Bob 70-71 Player who distinguished themselves to (me) the Webmaster personally. Anyone who scrutinises the site in any detail will know that this will inevitably go to an ex-Leeds United Player. This year I have chosen a former Bradford City player ....

......Paul Reaney (Leeds United)! Ok, Ok, so yes he did play the bulk of his career at Leeds United, but I wanted to savour the moment for you before you found out. Liken this to one of Paul's glorious kicks off the line just as everyone believed the ball was headed for the net.

The reason for Paul's award is two-fold.

Firstly, thanks to Paul, Leeds United legends have been organised in to making regular appearances on behalf of the club. For me this is, of course, heaven.

And secondly, Paul actually signed my 1972 FA Cup Number 2 shirt, that I wore from when I was 9 until it would stretch no more. Now my son wears it, moth eaten as it is. Paul fulfilled his reputation of being a great talker, and chatted freely to me as he signed it. So thanks for the childhood memories, and sad-lonely-should-get-out-more adult memories, too.

Prvious winners: 2000 Eddie Gray, 2001 Norman Hunter, 2002 Peter Lorimer, 2003 Paul Hart (Stockport County), 2004 Allan Clarke

Next Generation News

Stuart Gray, son of Eddie Gray, makes his debut for his his new side Oxford United in a League Two match away to Grimsby Town. It was an away 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile brother, Nick Gray, has been promoted up Leeds United's ranks and has now got a team squad number. It is not certain how often the Leeds fans will see him in his number 33 shirt, as so far in his young career, rather like his father, he has had a tendency towards injury.

Incidentally, cousin, Andy Gray, son of Frank Gray, scored for Sheffield United on the opening day of the Championship in their 4-1 home victory against Leicester City.

Andy Liddell, son of Garry Liddell (Leeds United) makes his debut for Oldham Athletic in League One, having moved to the side from Sheffield United over the Summer. The League match is is a 2-0 home victory against Yeovil Town, who were playing their very first match at this level, having only entered the League in 2003.

Where are they now? Leeds United

Where are they now? Leeds United

(Click to purchase the book)

Well the truth of the matter is my wife knows EXACTLY where I am now, I'm sat on the bog reading this book.

It's absolutely riveting and I love it.

Of course I was hoping for a more definitive answer to the question of where Billy Bremner is now, he did do some pretty mean tackles after all, but I hope when it's my turn to go I'm there playing football and ripping shirts off in anger with him.

But the real joy of the book is finally getting to grips with the whereabouts of the real stars of my youth, Glan Letheran, Neil Firm and Peter Hampton! I used to pretend to be these fellas and my son's never even heard of them.

I was disappointed that it did not tell the joke that made Imre Varadi's name, ie Have you heard that Imre Varadi's father was a comedian, (Oh yes, what was his name?) Ollie. And the inclusion of Gypsy Lee Rose was hilarious, if a trifle non pc.

With over 140 post-1970 Leeds United players, this book is an essential purchase for ALL Leeds United fans, and anyone who likes 'where are they now? information.

The Wanderers by Rob Cavallini

The Wanderers by Rob Cavallini

(Click Dog N Duck Publications to buy the book).

One of the best new histories to become available this year has got to be Rob Cavallini's unique history of The Wanderers, the Victorian side that won the FA Cup 5 times at the very beginning of modern football history!

The book even manages, as far as is possible, a game by game line-up history, which is truely fascinating.

Other facts that caught my eye are that the picture on the front is the only known picture of the Wanderers, Lord Kinnard played in a record 9 FA Cup Finals - winning 5, and that legendary cricketer, WG Grace turned out for them.

At 11-99 pounds the booklet sized publication may seem pricey, but it is a remarkable publication and worth every penny to any football fan who takes his football history seriously.

See Dog N Duck Publications , which writes:

The Wanderers Football Club, ‘The Celebrated Wanderers’, was the first of that elite group of clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, Huddersfield Town, Arsenal and Manchester United, whose names so dominate successive eras of English football. Five times winners of the F.A. Cup, home at some stage of their careers to more than forty English International players and source of legendary administrators such as C.W. Alcock and Lord Kinnaird, the Wanderers are the very epitome of the early, heroic, age of the Association game.

It is surprising, therefore, that until now no comprehensive history of this renowned club has been available to the football enthusiast. ‘The Wanderers F.C.’ remedies that emission, beginning with a survey of the High Victorian milieu in which the Wanderers and its predecessor the Forest club had their origins. It provides for the first time a season by season narrative of the team’s matches based on contemporary accounts, together with a full statistical record of every game played by the club between its formation in 1859 and its disappearance some twenty five years later.

There are also brief biographies of fifty of the most prominent players with notes on others of interest who appeared for the club, among whom are a famous cricketing ‘Doctor’, the founder of West Ham United F.C., the father of an eminent Field Marshal, and the first American to play in an F.A. Cup Final.

Over the Summer, Peter Cormack, son of Peter Cormack (Nottingham Forest), left Bo'ness United from the Whyte and Mackay East Superleague (Scottish non-league), to join the Scottish Third Division side, Arbroath. He makes his full team debut in the Scottish League Challenge Cup 1st Round 1-3 home defeat against Stranraer.

I see Alan Brazil scored Arbroath's goal, though I've no information as to whether or not he is a reletive of the Scottish interntional and radio broadcaster of the same name.

It is a quirky fact that Peter's last full match at League level was also against Stranraer over a year yearlier, in May 2004. It was a Division 3 match, when he was still at Albion, and he lost that game 4-0 !

NB Peter makes his League debut in a 2-2 away draw v Albion Rovers on 6 August, 2005.

Email: Subject: First Substitution

You state that  Keith was the first ever substitute, can you tell me please was he substituted or whom did he replace?

Thanks,

Mike Holcroft, Blackpool.

He was the first person to come on as a substitute.

The match was a Division Two game on 21 August, 1965, the first day of the 1965-66 season. Charlton Athletic were away to Bolton Wanderers at Burnden Park. In the 11th minute with the score still 0-0, Charlton's goalkeeper, Mick Rose (Notts County) was injured. He was replaced in goal by outfield player, John Hewie, and Keith Peacock (Charlton Athletic) came on to become the first ever substitute. Bolton went on to win 4-2.

I got this information from possibly the best club history ever produced - Home and Away with Charlton Athletic 1920-2004 by Colin Cameron. Published by Colin Cameron and Rick Everitt, Sidcup, 2003.

As a result of adding the above information, I have now added extra information to the Charlton Athletic page, including all those who were in the 1970-71 Rothmans Football Yearbook. A further addition is Dick Plumb, who moved to Charlton mid-season from Yeovil Town.

How to Take a Penalty

How to Take A Penalty

(Click picture to go to Amazon to purchase)

When this first arrived through the post I had no idea how quickly hooked I would be by this book.

It reads a bit like a collection of those regular items you find in a Sunday supplement, and gives you answers to questions you realised you had not even thought to ask. If only science had covered these subjects at school, I might have spent less time fiddling with the labs gas taps, and more time listening to the teacher.

Any Aunties out there, buy your nephew this book. You will have spent your money so much more wisely than on handkerchiefs with a football monogram, and the thank-yous in return will be entirely genuine.

Chrysalis Books - How to Take a Penalty writes:

Why might it help a penalty taker to look at a clock before he kicks the ball? Does winning the toss actually matter? And why should some people consider playing darts blindfold?

'How to Take a Penalty' takes a novel and intriguing look at sport, by exploring the mathematics behind the action. Discover, for instance, the surprising links between boxing and figure skating and between American football and cricket, the unusual location of England's earliest 'football' (in a parish church), the 26.5-degree 'trick' snooker shot, the pros and cons of being a consistent golfer, and the formula for winning a game of tennis.

Whatever your sporting interests or ability, you will find plenty to absorb you in this insightful and fun book - and maybe you will improve your own chances of success!

Pelé in Tears

Which is the greatest taboo - male erectile dysfunction, or men crying in public? Today's Sunday Times newspaper reports that Pelé continues to lead from the front as he busts another male stereotype and appears around the world in tears for his son. Edson Cholbi do Nascimento, known as Edinho - Pelé's son, was arrested following an undercover police raid on a drugs cartel.

This is not his first brush with the law. The paper reports that Edinho, now 35, was a reserve goalkeeper with Santos before injury ended his career in 1999. Soon afterwards he was arrested for killing a motorcyclist when he was racing cars in the street.

This is the first time Bob's 70-71 Pages has caught up with Edinho, so he is now added to the Sons and Daughters page

Bruce Rioch Resurfaces!

One of the great mysteries of this site had been the much asked question, 'what ever happened to Bruce Rioch?'

In 1970-71 Bruce was one of the third Division Aston Villa stars who reached the League Cup final, where they lost to Spurs. He later won a Championship with Derby County in 1974-75 and was capatian of Scotland during the 1978 World Cup Finals. His managerial career had possibly peaked at Arsenal, and was last seen by this site when Wigan Athletic sacked him in February, 2001.

If I was to list the three most popular enquires not already included on the FAQ page of this site, it would be, 1) comments about George Best's drinking habits, 2) praise for the talents of Ken Wagstaff, and 3) what the hell happened to Bruce Rioch!

Even a researcher for football documenataries at the BBC could not find his current whereabouts when asked!

Then it happened no less than 9 emails in 24 hours (almost certainly a record for one subject) informed me Bruce has become the new manager of Odense Boldklub (OB) in Denmark's Superliga.

So many many thanks to John Vestphal, Thomas Berthou, Rasmus Fredlund Hansen, DF, Johnny, Frank P, Morten Olesen, Michael Frank, Morten Jacobsen for emailing me with the information, I really appreciate it.

I have now added Bruce's playing career figures and updated his managerial career figures on to his own page.
